Visual Arts, Design and Crafts in the Canterbury Region Regional labour market information for:

Arts:
The arts is a large industry in the Canterbury region (although compared against Canterbury's gross domestic product, it is more likely to be a small industry). Some of the reasons why include Christchurch having a strong theatre culture and a high proportion, per head of population, of art galleries, museums and tertiary institutions for the arts; the arts is community-based, with a lot of children involved in drama, dance and music lessons; and the arts is multi-disciplinary and part of many different occupations and industries within the Canterbury region. The main influences on the growth of the arts in Canterbury include the international festivals based in Wellington and Auckland, which raise the profile the arts nationally; household income and the level of disposable income individuals have to spend on performance, literary and visual arts; community sponsorship and grants allocated to community groups; and tourism, government policy and funding. The economic outlook for the arts is improving, due to the upturn in the national and local economy and increased consumer confidence; the opening of the new art gallery in Christchurch in 2003; and wider appreciation and awareness of the value of the arts to the social well-being of the community. There is also increased access to funding due to more government and local initiatives.

art For numerous reasons, the most difficult word to define without starting endless argument! Many definitions have been proposed. At least art involves a degree of human involvement through manual skills or thought as with the word " artificial ," meaning made by humans instead of by nature. Definitions vary in how they divide all that is artificial into what is and isn't art. The most common means is to rely upon the estimations of art experts and institutions. More useful may be to see definitions of aesthetics the arts beaux-arts craft ... high art , and low art Quotations about art, including others' definitions of art art advocacy - See advocacy art appraisal - See appraisal art appreciation See " appreciate and appreciation ".The introduction of basic principles of visual literacy especially the means to analyzing form without reference to subject matter, symbolism or historical context to general audiences for the purpose of enhancing their enjoyment of works of art . Most contemporary art critics and art historians shy away from this term, disparaging art appreciation as demanding too little serious thought. Art educators must be forgiven for providing young students an easily digestible introduction to art. Nevertheless, given the poor reputation of art appreciation, any program of sophistication would better introduce students to art production, along with art in
