Jacques Cartier's Third Voyage - 1541
Throughout the winter of 1541-1542, the Iroquoians had kept the fort at Charlesbourg-Royal under seige. All attempts to assuage the native anger over the loss of their chief, Donnacona, failed and Cartier was unable to regain any of the previous relationships he had cultivated. In Spring of 1542, Cartier abandoned Charlesbourg-Royal and set out for France with a supply of what he believed was gold and diamonds gathered from the shores of the St. Lawrence River. In St. John's Harbour in Newfoundland, Cartier met up with de Robertval who had arrived in the New World with shiploads of supplies, colonists (mostly prisoners avoiding execution in France) and artillery. Cartier explained the previous winter's events and the Native hostilities, but de Robertval ordered Cartier to return to Charlesbourg-Royal and continue with the settlement. Charlesbourg-Royal must survive. Under cover of night, Cartier set sail for France, leaving de Robertval to do what he wished. Cartier knew the futility of the settlement and wanted nothing more to do with it, but also knew that he would probably be hanged for treason by disobeying his superior. (De Robertval continued to Charlesbourg-Royal without Cartier and renamed the settlement 'France Royal'. However, after losing 60 men to the winter cold and scurvy, de Robertval abandoned France Royal completely the next year.)

A Brief History
of Canada

Pre-History to 1599
Early Exploration Introduction In the beginning, North America and Canada did not exist... at least in the minds of Europeans. They knew of Cathay and of the rich trade possibilities there, but the ocean to the west was a barrier which seemed too vast to cross. When overland trade routes became blocked and the voyage around Africa was found to be long and dangerous, the European nations began to look westward for a shorter journey. Little did they know that they would discover a whole new world complete with its own unique peoples and riches. This section deals with the discovery and early explorations of Canada and the attempts by both the English and French to settle in and lay claim to the New World. It deals with the first encounters with the Native People and the fragile relationships which developed between the Natives and Europeans, and even among the Europeans themselves. It deals with the development of the fur trade which would effectively change Canada's history forever. Jacques Cartier Biographical Facts
Jacques Cartier was born in 1491 in the French seaport of St.Malo, and died in 1557.His childhood wasn’t very eventful. Some people said that Jacques might have made a voyage by 1527, but his first voyage to the New World was in 1534. He explored during most of his adulthood. People started to hear and learn about him right before his first voyage when he became famous. Major Achievements Cartier's big highlights were in the St. Lawrence River area. He discovered the river and also went down it a few times. He explored the Gulf of St. Lawrence also. His main goal was to find a short route to Asia. He also went to Newfoundland and explored there a little bit. He was in many different areas of what’s now Quebec and Canada. He also explored Anicosti Island.
Country Jacques Cartier was picked for the journey because he had already been on a few expeditions, such as to Brazil and Newfoundland. His main missions were to find a quick route to Asia, riches, and later sailing routes. He was born in France sailed for France and lived in France for all of his life, except when he was on his expeditions. Cartier had a few expeditions, which was a little unlikely for most explorers back then. On his first voyage, France financed him two ships.
Impact On The New World
Jacques Cartier was very fortunate with the natives living in the New World, compared to other explorers and countries. He had Indian friends to trade with and to count on instead of having to fight with. The tribe he was friends with was the Iriquois. These natives helped them survive scurvy, which is a disease caused by not enough vitamin C. The Indians helped him by teaching him how to make a tea with a lot of vitamin C.

Like most European explorers seeking a passage to China, Jacques Cartier hit an obstacle: North America. The territory on which he lands is peopled by Natives who call this land Canada . This word, he learns, means "encampment" or "collection of huts." Cartier plants a cross in Gaspesia and takes possession of Canada in the name of the king of France.
Seaport of Dieppe
At the beginning of the next century, New France begins to take shape when colonists recruited in France settle in the Saint Lawrence valley and Acadia Amongst other factors, success depends on the contribution of the first occupants, who introduced the French to the land, the climate and the Amerindians nations who peopled North America.
