    OUR PEOPLE:
    A MEETING OF THREE WORLDS
Three different traditions come together in today's Guatemala: a pre-Columbian world of the Maya, a Spanish colonial heritage, a modern, forward-looking society. This diversity is central to the country's great appeal as a tourist destination.
Guatemala City, for instance, is a cosmopolitan capital in every way. Yet, there are remembrances from the 17th century and even Mayan ruins just at the edge of the city.
In La Antigua Guatemala, visitors stroll the same cobblestone streets, enjoy many of the same buildings and monuments that stood when this was regarded as one of the most beautiful capitals in Spanish America. In Antigua and Guatemala City, the celebrations for Lent and Holy Week are still spectacular and attract people from all over the world.
It is still possible to experience the clamor and color of an outdoor Indian market where handicrafts are made and sold in the same manner as in days gone by.
Early inhabitants of Guatemala's Caribbean coast required stern fortitude and bravery to defend themselves from the pirates which sailed those waters. These traits, as well as unfailing good humor, are part of the rhythms of the traditional dances of the Garifuna who inhabit the region today.
This is the present formal name for Guatemala City, the capital of the Republic. It is the nation's commercial, administrative and financial center. The Plaza Mayor, the heart of the historic center of the city, is surrounded by architectural monuments:

Campeche Travel Guide Overview General Info. and Destinations Overview
The state of Campeche and its capital city of the same name are building new attractions, improving the roads and restoring archeological sites. The projects are designed to revitalize the state's tourism industry. 'Our plans to improve our tourism offerings are becoming a reality,' says Campeche governor, Jose Antonio Gonzalez Curi. 'With 457 years of history, the city of Campeche now presents a new face, with a newly renovated historical center. We are also remodeling old haciendas and renovating archeological sites. And our program to promote new investment will attract new hotels and air service.' G eneral Info. and Destinations With the support of Mexico's Ministry of Tourism, which allotted the state nearly $2.4 million, Campeche is building better road access to several archeological sites, boosting promotion and improving services. The plan includes the construction of new roads which will link Campeche directly to the Calakmul Biosphere Reserve, an area rich in archeology and wildlife that extends into the Peten region of Guatemala. Work is scheduled to be completed next year. Campeche has the largest concentration of Maya ruins in the world, some dating as far back as 900 B.C. There's also plenty of history contained in the fortified city of Campeche, the first port established by the Spaniards in the Yucatan Peninsula. During the 17th century the city's status as a shipbuilding and trade center attracted some of the most ferocious pirates that ever plagued the Caribbean, including Henry Morgan and Francis Drake. To protect themselves the citizens of Campeche built a muralla, or fortress wall, around the city featuring eight towers armed with 871 cannons.
