THE VOYAGES OF JACQUES CARTIER Main Menu While the English were concentrating on a northwest passage to Asia, the French King, Francois I commissioned Jacques Cartier (born in 1491) to find a way west to the Pacific and claim new lands for France. Cartier's expedition set sail from the port of St. Malo in [1534] with two ships. After passing Newfoundland, Cartier discovered the mouth of the St. Lawrence River in present-day Canada. On his second voyage in 1535, Cartier with the help of Indian guides explored the St. Lawrence River and passed the future sites of present-day Quebec and Montreal. He sailed back to France in 1536 after he and his crew suffered from scurvy and extreme cold. By 1541, King Francois was committed to settle in the new lands discovered by Cartier. With wars raging in Europe, the French eventually lost interest in the New World. But Frenchmen followed Cartier's route up the St. Lawrence to establish a lucrative trade network with the Indians. Cartier was followed by countrymen Samuel de Champlain and Sieur de La Salle . Champlain established the first permanent settlement at Quebec, explored the St. Lawrence, the coasts of Nova Scotia, and Maine. He discovered Lake Champlain in New York and traveled as far north as Lake Huron. La Salle wanted to establish French rule from the Great Lakes to the Mississippi Valley. He explored the Mississippi river and claimed the surrounding territory of Louisiana for France.

Towards the New Millenium The Founding of New France Throughout the rest of the 16th century the European fishing fleets continued to make almost annual visits to the eastern shores of Canada. Chiefly as a sideline of the fishing industry, there continued an unorganized traffic in furs. At home in Europe new methods of processing furs were developed and beaver hats in particular grew very fashionable. Thus new encouragement was given to the infant fur trade in Canada. Among his lieutenants was a geographer named Samuel de Champlain, who promptly carried out a major exploration of the northeastern coastline of what is now the United States (see Champlain). In the spring the St. Croix settlement was moved to a new site across the Bay of Fundy, on the shore of the Annapolis Basin, an inlet in western Nova Scotia. Important Notices Northwest Passage When the New World was first "discovered," the great cartographers of Europe, such as Sebastian Munster , predicted that it was nothing more than a narrow strip of land. But, once they realized just how far apart the two continents really were, European adventurers of the seventeenth century began searching for a water route that might lead them around or through this great obstacle. The Northwest Passage became one of the most powerful geographical ideas of all time – a Holy Grail in Europe's quest for the untold riches of Cathay. With the English concentrating on more northerly approaches to the Northwest Passage, exploration of the western interior in the early-eighteenth century was left largely to the French. Their westward movement was fuelled by two major factors: their desire to check the flow of furs heading north to the English on Hudson Bay, and their continuing search for an inland waterway that was rumoured to lead to the Pacific.
