Explorer Sites A Treasure Trove of North American Exploration Accounts of European voyages and explorations to North America, from Columbus's Atlantic crossing in 1492 to the famous trip through the Northwest Passage by Roald Amundsen in 1905. Alphabetical Navigation permits browsing by explorers' names Discovery and Exploration Maps from the Library of Congress Documents the discovery and exploration of the Americas with both manuscripts and published maps. Many of these maps reflect the European Age of Discoveries, dating from the late 15th century to the 17th century when Europeans were concerned primarily with determining the outline of the continents as they explored and mapped the coastal areas and the major waterways. Also included are 18th and 19th century maps documenting the exploration and mapping of the interior parts of the continents, reflecting the work of Lewis and Clark and subsequent government explorers and surveyors. Primary sources
On this page are primary sources on voyages of discovery that can be found on the web. Primary sources are the texts the travellers themselves wrote on their voyages. Of course these sources are of utmost importance when studying the history of exploration. There is also a part on secondary sources , that is, sources that were written by others than the voyagers themselves, either based on information directly from the voyagers themselves, or on primary sources, which in some cases might be lost afterwards.

He also discovered the lake named for him on the border of New York and Vermont state. He was important in establishing and administering the French colonies in the New World. Samuel de Champlain was born in Brouage, in 1567 and died in 1635. His father was a ship-captain. In 1599 he become captain of a ship and for over two years explored the West Indies and Mexico. He made his first voyage to Canada in 1603 and explored the St. Lawrence River. In 1629 Quebec was captured by the English and Champlain was taken to England as a prisoner. When Canada was returned to France in 1633 Champlain returned to his post and remained in Quebec until he died in 1635.

    FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:
February 13, 2002 GOVERNOR SIGNS HUDSON-CHAMPLAIN-FULTON QUADRICENTENNIAL LAW
New Commission to Oversee Celebrations for Historic Voyages of Three Pioneers
Governor George E. Pataki today announced that he has signed into law legislation establishing the new Hudson-Fulton-Champlain Quadricentennial Commission. The Commission will plan and develop the 400th anniversary celebrations of the voyages of discovery made by Henry Hudson and Samuel de Champlain, as well as the 200th anniversary of Robert Fulton's steamship voyage along the Hudson River. "These legendary figures played a key role in the history of New York and this important new commission will play a key role in helping us celebrate and honor their legacies," Governor Pataki said. "These upcoming celebrations will help energize communities all along the Hudson River and Lake Champlain, while also attracting thousands of new visitors from across the nation to Upstate New York." In addition to planning the upcoming quadricentennial celebrations, the Commission will focus on highlighting the unsurpassed beauty of the Hudson and the grandeur of Lake Champlain, as well as the boundless economic and cultural opportunities presented by the communities along their shores. As part of its mission, the panel will foster community revitalization efforts in river and lakefront communities, explore the potential for economically sustainable development, and attract support for local capital improvements.
