Patty Winkler High School for Health Professions Houston, Texas email address winkler@ruf.rice.edu
Overview:
This lesson will cover the topic of solving mixture problems in algebra and Chemistry. It is intended for Algebra and Chemistry classes at the high school level, but can be used as enrichment or remediation at other levels. This lesson takes at least two 50-minute class periods. The goal is to teach students to solve a verbal problems about mixing solutions. There will be two types of problems. In the first type the students will be given two solutions to combine and will be asked to find concentrations of the resulting mixture. The second type will ask the student how much of a given substance should be added to a starting solution to obtain a desired resulting solution. This lesson involves guided practice, cooperative learning, manipulatives, modeling and independent practice.
Objectives:
The student will use equations to solve mixture problems involving percents. Texas Essential Elements: 2A - Writing and evaluation of linear expressions from verbal descriptions.

The Science Center:
Launching Into Cyberspace
This issue highlights The Science Center , an innovative and interactive web site equipping teachers and students with resources that help introduce science and environmental issues in the classroom. Many of you have visited the site. For those who have not, this may be a "user's guide" to an exciting addition to the Internet. Since its launch at the NSTA national conference in April, we have been overwhelmed by the response the site has received. In fact, we are pleased to announce that The Science Center has been awarded "5 APPLES," the highest rating for content, by The EduZone, a leading site on the Internet for educators. With just a few clicks of your mouse, you now can:
  • Receive free and useful educational resources that help students understand complex science and environmental issues.
  • Pose questions or teaching ideas for other educators around the world to read and answer.
  • Access a comprehensive listing of sites that offer teaching materials and information on a variety of science and environmental topics.

Information about
Flinn Scientific Foundation Summer
Chemistry Workshops for High School
Chemistry Teachers.
What are Flinn Foundation Summer Chemistry Workshops?
The workshops are one-week, intensive study workshops that focus on enhancing a high school science teacher's knowledge of using chemical demonstrations, participating in hands-on laboratory activities, and meeting National Education Science Standards for chemistry. The workshops are modeled after the Woodrow Wilson National Fellowship Foundation Torch Program.
What is the Flinn Scientific Foundation?
The Flinn Scientific Foundation is a non-profit foundation established by Flinn Scientific Inc. to organize, manage, and help fund summer chemistry workshops. An advisory board consisting of six teachers has been established to advise and help manage the operation of the Flinn Scientific Foundation Summer Chemistry Workshops.
Who should attend?
Any high school science instructor teaching chemistry concepts who wishes to learn and practice chemical demonstrations and hands-on laboratory activities should attend. New chemistry teachers are especially encouraged to attend and be exposed to a wealth of tested demonstrations and laboratory activities. More experienced teachers will benefit by being able to improve their demonstration and laboratory skills in addition to learning a few new "tricks" to take back to their classrooms.

Using the Learning Cycle to Teach Physical Science discusses and gives examples of a science teaching strategythe learning cyclethat emphasizes science as a process of inquiry rather than as a body of knowledge, and uses questions, activities, and experiences to guide students in constructing science concepts on their own. The first part of the book discusses the rationale for this approach and its use in teaching science. The second part then gives examples of how the cycle can be used to teach 6 basic physical science concepts: (1) Bernoulli's principle, (2) acids and bases, (3) properties of gases, (4) expansion and contraction of gases, (5) circuits, and (6) density. 3rd ed. Anthea Maton, Jean Hopkins, Susan Johnson, and others. Prentice Hall Science Integrated Learning System series. Upper Saddle River, N.J.: Prentice Hall, 1997. Program Overview
The Prentice Hall Science Integrated Learning System series is a program for middle school or junior high school students. Designed to cover all relevant areas of science, this program consists of 19 books, each in a particular topic area, such as sound and light, the planet earth, and chemistry of matter. Seven science themes are incorporated into the program; the themes are energy, evolution, patterns of change, scale and structure, systems and interactions, unity and diversity, and stability. For each unit, teaching materials, ancillary student materials, and some optional components are available.
Student Edition
Recommended grade level:
Reading level: 12. The textbook Chemistry of Matter, which introduces students to the chemical properties of matter, is organized in 5 chapters: (1) "Atoms and Bonding," (2) "Chemical Reactions," (3) "Families of Chemical Compounds," (4) "Petrochemical Technology," and (5) "Radioactive Elements." Students learn about ionic, covalent, and metallic bonds and about how to predict bond type. They also learn about chemical reactions, chemical equations, and the energy associated with chemical reactions. They study the nature of solutions and the factors that affect the rate of solution and solubility. Students also investigate acids, bases, and salts, as well as carbon compounds, petrochemical technology, and polymerization. They are introduced to the properties of radioactive elements, find out how nuclear reactions (including transmutation, fission, and fusion) occur, and learn about the uses and dangers of radioactivity.
