E-mail us at: uarc@pobox.upenn.edu Gertrude Klein Peirce (1859-1953) Gertrude Klein Peirce and Anna Lockhart Flanigen met at Women's Medical College. The two women were the first fe male students admitted to the University of Pennsylvania. Miss Peirce earned a certificate of proficiency in Chemistry in 1878. She continued her studies in a post-graduate course in 1878 and 1879. She was co-author with Dr. Edgar Fahs Smith, of a paper on the products obtained in the Nitration of meta Chlorsalicylic Acid. In 1884 Gertrude Peirce married Francis Easby. She maintained an active interest in social concerns, settlement work, and remained a proud alumna of the University until her death at the age of 94. Anna Lockhart Flanigen (1852-1928) One of the first two women to attend the University of Pennsylvania, Anna Flanigen earned a certificate of proficiency in chemistry in 1878. She later studied in Berlin and at London University College under Sir William Ramsey. She earned her doctorate at the University of Pennsylvania in 1906 and became a professor of chemistry at

Dr. Gypsy Abbott: Dr. Abbott is the Principal Investigator for both the GK-12 and EdGrid programs at UAB. Her interest in computational science began when served as the program evaluator for the Alabama Supercomputing Program to Inspire Research in Education (ASPIRE), the Alabama high school computational science program. Based on her evaluation reports, the ASPIRE program was identified as 1 of 5 Promising Programs in Gender Equity Office of Educational Research and Improvement of the U.S. Department of Education). In addition, she has made national and regional presentations describing these gender-related outcomes.
Since 1981, her professional interests have been in evaluating of federally funded programs in mathematics, science, and technology. Two of evaluation reports in the mathematics and science content areas have been selected as the "Outstanding Evaluation Report" of the year by the Program Evaluation division of the American Educational Research Association. She has also been involved in studying gender issues related to the sciences. She has been active in establishing collaboration between the School of Education and departments in the SMET areas. Jeremy Fisher Jeremy Fisher is a GK-12 Fellow from the UAB Computer Information Science Department. He graduated with a B.S. in Chemistry from Birmingham- Southern in 1999 (cum laude). He has completed the undergraduate requirements UAB for Graduate School in Computer Science and qualified for Ph.D. candidacy in winter 2002.

Just click on the name of the one you want to read in the list below. Keith Moffat is Professor of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology and Director of the Center for Advanced Radiation Sources at The University of Chicago. He obtained his BSc in Physics from the University of Edinburgh, where a conversation with William Cochran directed him towards biophysics. He obtained his PhD from Cambridge University in 1970, where he studied haemoglobin crystallography with Max Perutz at the MRC Laboratory of Molecular Biology. After postdoctoral studies in rapid reaction kinetics with Quentin Gibson at Cornell University, he held faculty positions there until 1990. His research interests lie in reaction mechanisms studied by time-resolved macromolecular crystallography, and in applications of synchrotron radiation to structural biology. Michael Hart is at present the Chairman of the National Synchrotron Light Source at Brookhaven National Laboratory. From 1975 to 1977, he was Special Advisor to the Central Policy Review Staff at the Cabinet Office, Whitehall, UK. From 1976 to 1984, he was Wheatstone Professor and Head of the Physics Department of King's College, London. He was Science Programme Coordinator for the SRS at the SERC Daresbury Laboratory from 1985 to 1988 and Professor of Physics at Manchester University from 1985 to 1993. His research interests are X-ray physics, especially X-ray optics.
