The committee supported Illinois Department of Public Health Director Dr. John Lumpkin's recommendation for the vaccine on April 10, after two years of deliberation. Barbara Alexander-Mullarkey, Illinois Vaccine Awareness Coalition spokeswoman, said the requirement was passed despite lack of proof regarding the safety of the vaccine. "I don't understand how (Dr. Lumpkin) can in all conscience OK a vaccine that he or the manufacturer cannot produce a study on long-term effects for," Alexander-Mullarkey said. She also expressed concern about ingredients in the vaccine, which is produced by Merck and Company. She said the vaccine contains aborted fetal tissue cells, fetal bovine serum and hydrolyzed gelatin. "I question the source and country of where fetal bovine serum and hydrolyzed gelatin come from," Alexander-Mullarkey said.

Here I am in my thirtieth year, working hard, playing hard, taking a little exercise (very little), eating well (very well indeed) - I was not ready to be struck down with a strange debilitating illness. I started feeling a little funny on Thursday 16th, but, like a good little soldier went to work on the Friday. However, by lunchtime. I'd fell off my chair several times and when I came around gibbering in a pool of sweat I decided it would be better if I made my way home. Having spent Friday night and Saturday day with a temperature of about a million, sleeping fitfully, only moving to change the dripping sheets (and turning the mattress over on one occasion) I awoke on Sunday to find myself breaking out in a foul plague of boils. Of course I panicked, I rang the Doctor's but all I got was a recorded message and an emergency number, but rather than ring him up at home and risk incurring the full flow of his renowned sarcasm, I rang around some friends who, by majority diagnosed Chicken Pox. I rang my Dad and Auntie and asked them if I'd had it before and drew a complete blank, so I thought I'd look it up on the Internet and see what I'm in for [see links at bottom of page] . This scared me even more, according to various sites I could look forward to complications such as encephalitis, hepatitis and pneumonia, I could be hospitalized and may not recover for over a month! As it turned out I recovered in a couple of weeks, but none of the sites prepared me for the different stages of the illness, which is why I've written this page, in the hope of shedding some light on what to expect.

Chicken pox is quite contagiousin families about 75% of siblings who have not already had chicken pox will get it if a brother or sister does. The most contagious time is before the rash appears! Thus, quarantining does little good to keep the illness from spreading, although the bumps are contagious until they crust over. The incubation period is two to three weeksthat is, if you are susceptible and exposed to chicken pox, you will not know for two to three weeks whether or not you will become ill. Illness varies from almost no symptoms except the rash to high fevers and feeling quite ill. The rash usually begins centrallychest, trunk and face, then spreads to arms and legs. The bumps will usually be at all different stages (red bump to pustule to crust) at the same time. You should be evaluated in Health Services if you think you have chicken pox, particularly if you have a cough or trouble breathing. Chicken pox is the least dangerous of all the childhood illnesses unless you have a significant underlying problem with your immune system.
