Mailing Lists Related to Children's Literature Mailing lists create online discussion groups among people who share a common interest. A message sent to a single e-mail address is forwarded to the e-mail mailbox of everyone who has asked to subscribe to that mailing list. The volume of mail received from a list may be several messages each day, but many lists have a DIGEST option that will combine all the messages for the day and send them out as one long message. It is best to add subscriptions one at a time and evaluate your ability to handle the volume of mail generated. If you are unable or unwilling to handle the mail generated by these lists, you may still be able to participate in Usenet newsgroup discussions, such as rec.arts.books.childrens , which work in a way similar to mailing lists, but send the messages to your host computer rather than your personal mailbox.

Return to Publishing FAQs Learning About Children’s Trade Book Publishing Four to five thousand children's books—from picture books to young adult novels—are published in the U.S. each year. There are small publishing houses as well as large firms and conglomerates. There are many special interest publishers as well as houses with general publishing programs. A majority of larger, general trade book publishers are based in New York City, although there are many small and large houses in other parts of the country. Book publishing programs vary. While hardcover publishers originate books of every description, many lists reflect particular interests. For example, one list may reflect a publisher's emphasis on pre-school books; another may include a preponderance of books aimed at the middle grades and young adults; another, books that have originated abroad; and another may concentrate on nonfiction books on contemporary subjects. Paperback publishers originate titles on their own and purchase publication rights from hardcover publishers. Many original paperbacks appear in a series format and are originated by a book producer, sometimes called a packager, rather than by the publisher. Some hardcover publishers also publish paperback editions of titles from their own list, either at the same time the original hardcover publication appears, or after it.

Return to Publications Page The following are thirteen ways to connect children to books. They are intended to introduce readers to the joys of literature and hook them on books hopefully for a lifetime. Most of these ideas can be adapted to suit different age groups. We suggest that you use them as starting points; along the way you may even invent a few of your own. 1. Contests and Awards One tried and true event is to hold a reading contest.
    • Set a time frame two weeks, a month, a school year. Create an honor roll with each child's name. As each participant finishes a book, put a star or other mark next to his or her name. Organize readers into teams of students with varying reading abilities. That way, no one feels left out or intimidated. Award prizes at the end of the assigned time, being sure to include categories for everyone, such as "Most Improved," "Best Out-Loud Reader," etc.
    2. Read-Aloud Marathon This is a more challenging event. Set aside as much time as possible.
    • Gather teachers, librarians, and pupils in a comfortable space.
