Zabreiko In modern times mathematics has become an inseparable part of human culture, in which it plays a fundamental role. Throughout the centuries mathematics has been a crucial tool in the hands of mankind. It has allowed us to understand the fundamental principles of the universe, for example Newton's law of gravity, Einstein's equivalence of mass and energy, Maxwell's equations of electromagnetism, the laws of quantum mechanics for elementary particles, and even the Big Bang theory. The advances in interplanetary exploration and rapid development of computer technology wouldn't have been possible without mathematics.

Traditional History
Teacher's Note : This section is divided into two parts. The first, Ancient History, focuses on the beginning of the dynastic system and China's early inventions. The first emperor of China, Qin Shihuangdi, is highlighted along with one of the major accomplishments of his reign, the construction of the Great Wall, and the life-size clay army found buried in his tombs. The second part, Medieval History, concentrates on the many inventions and ideas that eventually found their way to the West. This was the "Golden Age" of China, during which the imperial structure matured and Chinese philosophy and society flourished. Featured in Part II are the travels and tales of Marco Polo. Two booklets, China's Gifts to the West and Chinese Ideas in the West are provided to accompany the contents of this section, especially units 3 and 4. They are in the Appendix Teachers are referred to the section on Art for supplementary units which provide material on Chinese art as an expression of Chinese culture.

Local History in Early Medieval China Panel #2, Association for Asian Studies Annual Meeting, San Diego, California, March 2000.
Panel Abstract
This panel addresses local history writing in China in the second-fourth centuries A.D . Local history can be broadly defined as any sort of written material that is collected about an area with a limited geographical scope, as opposed to having a universal orientation; this includes many sub-genres such as annals, narrative histories, biographies of local men, and descriptions of local scenery. Material of this sort flourished in the late Han and Wei-Jin period. The panelists will explore three different significant aspects of local history: As an expression of separatism : The fractured political world of the Wei-Jin period suggests that local history represents a desire for political autonomy. To test this thesis, generic conventions will be examined for the way that authors conceptualized their local area and its relationship to other areas and the imperial court(s). As historical source materials : Wei-Jin local histories are an important source for contemporary historians of the period, and include some of the most intriguing and best-known accounts of people and events. It is critical to assess the origins, reliability, and adequacy of these materials.

Reviews
‘The Cambridge History of Ancient China bridges the gap between the earliest material evidence that has come to light through archaeological discoveries and Chinese textual sources … the present volume dedicates two chapters to each of the periods covered; one on the institutional history and the other on material culture. The results affords a far more comprehensive view of ancient China than a ‘primary sources’ approach could have yielded … Whether consulted as a reference or read continuously; the wealth of material in the present volume will be relevant not only to scholars and students, but to the general reading public interested in that cultural melting-pot which is China.’ History Today ‘Read as a whole, this volume’s advocacy of archaeological insights, combined with more traditional historical approaches, offers a truly stimulating invigoration of how we imagine the ancient world in China … A particularly fascinating chapter by Nicola Di Cosmo surveys the textual and archaeological knowledge of China’s northern zone … The archaeological chapters surpass all previous accounts for their narrative cohesion and detailed references.’ Times Higher Education Supplement
