Faculty of Letters
Department of History and Geography
Set up in 1949 as a tripos of courses in, respectively, Japanese, Oriental and Occidental history, to which in 1967 was added a geography course, and eleven years later given its present form, from the beginning the department has been distinguished by its breadth of research and its insistence upon proof by historical evidence, a tradition upheld in the present. First-year students are offered introductions to basic approaches in history and geography and outlines of both disciplines, and soon start to contribute to the ongoing process of research and theoretical argument under the guidance of a diversity of teachers. It is during this period that the student begins to identify and eventually settles on the area of special study to be concentrated upon in the remaining three years. On the basis of this decision the student chooses from four course-groups, in Japanese, Oriental, and Occidental History, and Geography, that which she or he will subsequently follow, to graduation and possibly beyond; and, through the seminar-based foundation subjects, becomes accustomed to defending her or his interpretations in the arena of academic debate, while receiving guidance from courses of lectures introducing historical materials and basic works of reference. Also offered in the second year are introductions to archaeology, ethnology, paleography and museology. By no means confined to the department itself, the activities of our students extend to the use of Group Reading Rooms in the University Library, its Archaeological Materials Room, and the Asuka Institute of Kansai University in Nara, where cooperative links are often forged with members of other Faculties, who are approaching the same subjects from other academic vantages.

Medieval Sourcebook:
John of Monte Corvino: Report from China 1305
John of Monte Corvino (1247-1328) was a Franciscan priest and the first archbishop of Cambalec (present-day Peiping) in 1307. He crossed central Asia during a rare interval of peace when that region was controlled by the Mongol Khans. I, Friar John of Monte Corvino, of the order of Minor Friars, departed from Tauris, a city of the Persians, in the year of the Lord 1291, and proceeded to India. And I remained in the country of India, wherein stands the church of St. Thomas the Apostle, for thirteen months, and in that region baptized in different places about one hundred persons. The companion of my journey was Friar Nicholas of Pistoia, of the order of Preachers, who died there, and was buried in the church aforesaid. I proceeded on my further journey and made my way to Cathay, the realm of the Emperor of the Tartars who is called the Grand Cham. To him I presented the letter of our lord the Pope, and invited him to adopt the Catholic Faith of our Lord Jesus Christ, but he had grown too old in idolatry. However he bestows many kindnesses upon the Christians, and these two years past I am abiding with him. . . . In this mission I abode alone and without any associate for eleven years; but it is now going on for two years since I was joined by Friar Arnold, a German of the province of Cologne. I have built a church in the city of Cambaliech, in which the king has his chief residence. This I completed six years ago; and I have built a bell-tower to it, and put three bells in it. I have baptized there, as well as I can estimate, up to this time some 6000 persons; and if those charges against me of which I have spoken had not been made, I should have baptized more than 30,000. And I am often still engaged in baptizing.

Title Antiqua medicine : from Homer to Vesalius Description An online version of the exhibition of the same name held at the Health System of the University of Virginia in February 1997. It provides an overview of the history of medicine in the Greek, Roman and Byzantine worlds and the continuation of its tradition in the work of Galen and Vesalius. The exhibition is organised into a number of themed, illustrated articles. The illustrations include photographs of artefacts and images from illustrated manuscripts, books and paintings. In November 1902 we published the first volume of The Cambridge Modern History. This reprinted within a month, and established the genre of collaborative scholarly reference uniquely associated with Cambridge. The original twelve volumes of the Cambridge Modern History were swiftly followed by the Cambridge History of English Literature, the Cambridge Medieval History, the Cambridge Ancient History and the Histories of India and the British Empire. A further wave of commissioning from the 1950s to the 1980s initiated the Cambridge Histories of China, Japan, Africa, Latin America, Islam, Iran, various Cambridge Economic Histories, and the revision and renewal of some of the original Histories. During the last decade further expansion has taken place, with Cambridge Histories of political thought, of literature and of philosophy all coming to fruition. Throughout 2002 we shall be celebrating the centenary of the 'Cambridge History' as an institution, and as an exemplar of the quality and continued scholarly resonance of Cambridge publishing.
