When the movie first came out and before I actually saw it, I initially reiterated the criticisms that many Asian American organizations had about it. These included that there were virtually no Japanese American or Asian American characters in the movie, despite the fact that at the time, one-third of Hawai'i's population was Asian American, including many who helped to fight the attackers and who helped care for injured. Most important, I was wary that it might lead to even more hostility and hatred toward the Japanese American community and by default (again based on the stereotype that all Asians are the same), all Asian Americans. Now, after finally seeing the movie and after the events of 9/11, I see the movie in a slightly different light. I still stand by those initial criticisms. However, I do not think that the portrayals of Japanese characters was as bad or harmful as I had feared. They could have been portrayed with a little more depth but overall, it could have been a lot worse.

Coverage of Spying Allegations at Nuclear Labs The Asian American Journalists Association, a nonprofit educational organization based in San Francisco, is alarmed that the allegations of espionage at Los Alamos National Laboratory have sparked numerous press reports, editorials and cartoons that promote racist stereotypes. If coverage does not improve, AAJA is concerned that these media accounts will do more harm to the Asian Pacific community than some of the poor coverage stemming from allegations of fundraising by Asian nationals during the 1996 presidential campaign. AAJA is dismayed that some stories about the investigation of Wen Ho Lee, a scientist at Los Alamos, have unnecessarily referred to his race and ethnicity. Some media have also chosen to portray Chinese and Chinese Americans with a broad brush, using loaded words that are offensive and imply that these people are inscrutable and untrustworthy. Cartoons have also appeared that exaggerate and poke fun at physical appearances by depicting slanted eyes and buck teeth. In one particularly offensive example, a recent editorial in the Santa Fe New Mexican newspaper made fun of Asian accents, unnecessarily referred to the Fu Manchu character and tried to make a link between the allegations of stolen nuclear secrets and the bombing of the Chinese embassy in Belgrade.
