History:
The Manchu (Qing) Dynasty

The intrusion of the West into China- by both the introduction and fostering of Western capitalism and the Christian missionaries (although their converting aspirations had little effect, their schools, hospitals etc. had a profound influence) fundamentally altered the traditional structure of Chinese society, causing revolutionary upheavals and the eventual end of the Manchu dynasty. Alongside Western incursions, the Manchu governments suffered the millennialist sect-inspired Taiping Rebellion between 1850 and 1864 and Moslem uprisings between 1864 and 1878, imperial order finally being restored under the Chancellor Li Hung Chang only with the aid of Western adventurers. To compound Manchu troubles, war broke out with Japan in 1894. The Japanese conquered Dairen, Weihaiwei, Shatung and Seoul, with China finally ceding Taiwan and the Pescadores Islands in 1895, alongside payment of reparations. Emperors of the Sangoku
the "Three Kingdoms,"
India and China are the sources of the greatest civilizations in Eastern and Southern Asia. Their rulers saw themselves as universal monarchs, thereby matching the pretentions of the Roman Emperors in the West. The only drawbacks to their priority are that India suffered a setback, when the Indus Valley Civilization collapsed (for disputed reasons), and China got started later than the Middle Eastern civilizations. By the time India recovered, it was a contemporary of Greece, rather than Sumeria, with many parallel cultural developments, like philosophy. And, curiously, China reached a philosophical stage of development in the same era, the "axial age," 800 to 400 BC. Later, when the West, India, and China, all had contact with each other, it was at first India that had the most influence on China, through the introduction of Buddhism. Indian influence on the West, though likely through the skepticism of Pyrrho , and possibly evident in the halos of Christian saints (borrowed from Buddhist iconography), did not extend to anything more substantial. While China then made Buddhism its own, India later endured the advent of , which introduced deep cultural and then political divisions into the Subcontinent. The only comparable development in China was the application of

Chinese New Year The Chinese New Year has a great history. In other traditions, by this time in the year, most resolutions - made on December 31 - have been subtly forgotten and placed in a cupboard marked "maybe next year." However, all hope is not lost, as there's a second chance to start afresh with the celebration of Chinese New Year on February 1st
The Chinese New Year is very similar to the Western one, swathed in traditions and rituals.
The origin of the Chinese New Year is itself centuries old - in fact, too old to actually be traced. It is popularly recognised as the Spring Festival and celebrations last 15 days.
Preparations tend to begin a month from the date of the Chinese New Year (similar to a Western Christmas), when people start buying presents, decoration materials, food and clothing. A huge clean-up gets underway days before the New Year, when Chinese houses are cleaned from top to bottom, to sweep away any traces of bad luck, and doors and windowpanes are given a new coat of paint, usually red. The doors and windows are then decorated with paper cuts and couplets with themes such as happiness, wealth and longevity printed on them.

Bronze urns dug from the Victorian goldfields, a queue ("pigtail") cut off its wearer last century, and the debutante balls of the Young Chinese League from the 1930's evoke some of the richness of the Chinese contribution to Australia's history. A living part of Melbourne's modern Chinatown, the Chinese Museum was brought into being in 1985 to document, preserve and display the history of Australians of Chinese descent. An exiting range of changing exhibitions, audiovisual presentations, heritage tours and public seminars are some of the ways by which Australia's Chinese community shares its past, its culture, and its values with wide society, through the Museum.
