Solar Deity
(Redirected from Sun mythology People have worshiped the Sun and Gods who represent the Sun for all of recorded history . Hence, many beliefs and legends have been formed around this worship. Sun gods are generally (though not always) male, and usually the brother, father, husband and/or enemy of the lunar deity (usually female). They were often gods of truth, honesty, virtue, prophecy, intellect and fertility. Solar Deities

    Chinese Mythology
Unlike in many other culture, Chinese people do not personify nor worship the Sun or the Moon . The most likely reason is the heavy influence of Taoism and I Ching in Chinese culture because the moon represents Yin and the sun represent Yang which are the basis of everything in nature.

    Key Ideas
    • In Chinese mythology the dragon has the power to bring rain.
    • The dragon frequently appears on Chinese court robes as a SYMBOL of the emperor's power to mediate between heaven and earth.
    • In keeping with the strict dress codes of the Ch'ing (ching) dynasty, the color, cut, and symbolic decoration of this empress's dragon robe indicate that its wearer is royalty.
Story A T'ang (tong) dynasty emperor visited the Chinese city of Loyang (low-yang) during a long spell of very hot, dry weather. There, in a temple, lived an Indian priest named Wu Wei (woo way), who knew how to call forth the dragon who brings rain. The emperor begged Wu Wei to bring rain to his scorched land. The priest refused. The heat was seasonable, he said, and summoning the dragon would do much damage. The emperor said that the people were suffering because of the drought. Any rain, he pleaded, even if accompanied by roaring winds and crashing thunder, would be good. Finally Wu Wei agreed. Wu Wei ordered everything from the temple except for one bowl of water to be removed. Stirring the water, he repeated magical words hundreds of times. Presently, a red finger-sized dragon appeared, raising its head slightly above the water's surface. Then it slowly disappeared. Wu wei stirred the water again, chanting a spell three times. From the bowl a white vapor rose several feet into the air and floated toward the temple door.

Chinese Mythology and Legends: Corpse under Confucianism China seems sometimes to used to be called "the Land without Mythology". But please try to think about there are few countries like Greece holding sophisticated and systemized Mythology, and the Greeks love their mythology to use for their literature and poetry, and drama without religious aim. Mythology is primally made from perspective of their natural circumstance, inevitably related to Religion and Respect. Politic and Centralization rouse unification of local mythologies. And oral tradition is succeeded in the process. I can say China keeps "primitive" polytheistic style mythology which monotheist culture and other countries which have taken apart Religion from Mythology like Tibet or Japan. Archaeology versus Mythology
China still remains many Darkspot for archaeology and we know Legend and Mythology hint objective facts
which lost during long oblivion and long time. We don't know whether the Kingdom of Xia (before ?Shang)

A Look at Chinese Mythology Introduction
The Eastern world is full of paradox, and, perhaps, the greatest paradox in China is that it has been so profoundly influenced by the world’s three most humane religions, Taoism, Confucianism and Buddhism, yet remains under the inhumane rule of Communism. But by turning to China’s mythology we begin to realize how it is possible the nation has been governed by monarchs, emperors and dictators throughout its entire history. The closest thing we have to it in the West exists in our corporate world. The Chinese pantheon, which it seems is populated with gods as numerous as the stars, is run very much like a large corporation, with a President, Vice Presidents and a Chief Executive Officer at the top of the hierarchy. Beneath these, in authority, you find division heads who direct the staff members. Lower still, on the corporate totem pole, are secretaries who, I’ve learned, prefer to be called Administrative Assistants—except, for some reason, on Secretaries Day. In most corporations the executive offices are located on the top floor, signifying their “top dog” authority.

HOME CHINA TODAY IDIOMS HISTORY ... HELP Features of Chinese Mythology Scholars and critics have written about the special features of Chinese mythology. Among the most obvious are:
    • Mythical stories are entwined with history. The history of the long period before recorded history began is partly based on legend, which is interwoven with mythology. Such ancient heroes and leaders as Fuxi, Shennong, Huangdi (the Yellow Emperor) and Yu are both historical figures according to legend and important characters in mythical stories.
    • They sing the praises of labour and creation.
    • They extol perseverance and self-sacrifice. One typical example is the story of Gun and Yu trying to tame the floods. Gun steals the "growing earth" from the Heavenly God with which to stop the floods, but the god has him killed. Out of his belly Yu is born, who continues his cause. Yu goes through countless hardships, remains unmarried until he is thirty, and leaves his wife only four days after their wedding to fight the floods, and finally brings them under control.
    • They praise rebellion against oppression.

HOME CHINA TODAY IDIOMS HISTORY ... HELP History of Chinese Mythology The writing of such stories began in the Wei and Jin Dynasties (220-420), when various writers, influenced by the alchemist's ideas and Taoist and Buddhist superstitions, were interested in inventing stories about gods and ghosts. Some of them show their unusual imagination and mastery of the written language. This practice was continued in the next period, the period of Southern and Northern Dynasties. But the dawn of fiction, in the true sense of the term, came much later, in the middle of the Tang Dynasty, when many well-known writers and poets went in for story-writing. Their stories have a wide range of subject matter and themes, reflecting various aspects of human nature, human relations and social life. In form they are not short notes or anecdotes like the tales produced before them, but well-structured stories with interesting plots and vivid characters, often several thousand words in length. Among them are many tales whose main characters are gods, ghosts, or foxes. Mythical stories of the Song Dynasty show strong influence of Tang fiction, but hardly attain the Tang level. One achievement in the field of fiction worthy of special mention is the compilation of the great Taiping Guangji or Extensive Records Compiled in the Taiping Years (976-983), which is a collection of about seven thousand stories published before and in the first years of the Song Dynasty. The stories were selected from over three hundred books, many of which have long been lost to us. A large portion of the seven thousand stories are about gods, deities, fairies, and ghosts.

Chinese Mythology by Will and Jupiter Narrator: The writing of Chinese mythology began around 220-420 in the Wei and Jin Dynasties, having been influenced by recent alchemist’s ideas and the Taoist and Buddhist religions. But the dawn of the truest type of fiction began much later in the middle of the Tang Dynasty when many well known writers and poets began writing myths. Many mythical stories have been entwined with history, as well. The long period before recorded history is partly based on legend and myth. Ancient heroes such as Fuxi, Shennong, Huangdi, and Yu are both historical figures and important mythical figures. Our first story is one that represents beliefs in the Buddhist religion.
