    RELIGION IN GENERAL
Before the Communist Revolution, a number of religious and philosophical systems were practiced in China. Traditionally Taoism and Confucianism provided ethical guides to the proper behavior of individuals and officials. Both of these systems originated in China during the so-called Golden Age of Chinese thought, several centuries before the beginning of the Christian era. Taoism sought to promote the inner peace of individuals and harmony with their surroundings. Confucianism, based on the teachings and writings of the philosopher Confucius, is an ethical system that sought to teach the proper way for all people to behave in society. Each relationshiphusband-wife, parents-children, ruler-subjectsinvolved a set of obligations which, if upheld, would lead to a just and harmonious society. Following his teachings would also promote a stable, lasting government. Buddhism , which came to China from India as early as the 1st century AD, was a more conventional religion. Its followers attended occasional services, practiced rituals, and supported a temple on a regular basis. It has been estimated that more than 68 million Chinese still consider themselves Buddhists, though it is unlikely that they practice the religion regularly (See Buddhism). Prior to 1949, practices that may best be called folk religions were common throughout China. Although they incorporated elements of Buddhism and, especially, Taoism, these religions were usually local, often based on local gods, and served the local people.

Home Agriculture Art Business ... Travel Chinese Philosophies and Religions Taoism Taoism and A Few Words about Tao Taoism is a philosophy, a religion and also the basis for Traditional Chinese Medication. It represents the wisdom accumulated over 5,000 years of Chinese history. Together with Confucianism and Buddhism, it has been continuously guiding Chinese in behaviors and governing. There are some very basic different approaches taken by the West and Chinese philosophies. The West treats individual as an independent and separate entity. Chinese treats individual as an element in the whole universe and is interrelated. West tends to be self-centered and thus any blame will be first on others. On the opposite, Chinese is taught to merge self into the environment as a whole or there is no self at all. Tao and Taoism are different from "God" and "Bible". To understand Taoism, one has to "unlearn" or break out from own paradigm to view it from a completely new angle. "Tao" means "behavior, understanding and the constant changing from and to". Taoism is a philosophy and a belief of simplicity and the very nature of universe. There is no absolute "stillness". Everything, including the universe, is changing all the time. The relative "stability" can be achieved when a harmony is reached between "Yin" and "Yang", which are said to be the opposite but related natural forces in the universe. There are five elements in everything. The following diagram described their interrelationship.

Both, the Controversy and the Discours , were interrupted by Leibniz’s death. These two fronts, although autonomous, show interesting doctrinal correlations. The first correlation is Leibniz’s concern for the so-called "decadence of natural religion": the dispute against Clarke began in it; and the Discours is a defense of Chinese natural religion, in order to show its concordance with Christian natural religion. The Controversy can be summed up under the heading "clockmaker-God versus idle God". Leibniz wants to escape from the perverse consequences that all criticism of divine voluntarism seems to cause. Thus, all his elaboration is directed at a distinct concept of God: He is the God that rules without interposing, He is the supramundane intelligence. And the leibnizian interpretation of the natural theology of the Chinese goes in the same direction: that of emphasizing a First Principle, Li , that rules without interposing Home aribas@campus.uoc.es

    Religion and emptiness
In the diverse religions we find expressions of the emptiness. The mystics have resorted often to this symbol to allude to their experience of God or the Absolute. But, mainly it is in the Eastern religions where this appeal is more explicit, concretely in Buddhism and Taoism.

    Science and emptiness
Until Eighteenth-century most of Western science rejected void. Such opinion was based on the principle of the "horror vacui". According to this principle, Nature abhors void. At last, modern science led by Newton follows classic atomism and admits void.

The vast treasury of Chinese literature was, in the eyes of the Chinese, never too much to be classified into different sections, starting with Classic or orthodox writings against vulgar literature. The whole corpus of literature has been comprised in only six different genres: Confucian Classics, Historical Books, Philosophers, Collections, Taoist and Buddhist writings. Surprisingly, all writings including novels, poems and scientific writings can be included in this system, the so-called " Four Storehouses " ( Siku ). In this place, Confucian, Buddhist and Taoist writings shall be seen separated because they are of different character and at the same time are the three bases of Chinese thought. Every one of these tree pillars of Chinese culture has its own tradition and structure, the Confucian writings comprising five, six or thirteen Classics and the huge treasure of comments; the Taoist writings including different schools of revelation and even writings about medicine; and the
