    peter@legroupe.org
At the age of sixty-eight, Peter Boneham continues to commit his energy towards dance evolution, understanding and appreciation, preserving the presence of this fragile art form in today’s culture.  As the longest acting Artistic Director in Canada in contemporary dance, this progressive – minded man has devoted his life to the development of new dance.  Mr. Boneham’s career in dance began in 1948 with The Mercury Ballet Co. in Rochester, New York. Six years later he moved to New York City where he worked with William Dollar Concert Ballet, the Metropolitan Opera Ballet and the Baltimore Civic Ballet, and performed musical comedies on Broadway, Summer Stock, at Radio City Music Hall, and the Latin Quarter. In the early sixties, Boneham moved to Canada to join Les Grands Ballets Canadiens and at this time did modern dance performances with Jeanne Renaud and Francoise Riopel. In 1966, Jeanne Renaud, founded Le Groupe de la Place Royale, with Boneham as her Assistant Artistic Director of the company. When Mme. Renaud retired in 1972, Boneham took on the role of Artistic Director sharing it with Jean-Pierre Perreault. During this time he choreographed a multitude of dance works such as What Happened?

The one constant presence in creations of those scenes was the Choreographer. After choreographers read the script to a play, ballet, or musical, they are responsible for developing routines and dance movements that convey the feeling and emotion of the story. Death, love, anger, joy, remorse, suspense are several of the emotions shown on stage or screen. Choreographers need to be good communicators because they have to teach actors/dancers routines that bring the production and it's message to life. Although choreographers have to know a great deal about movement, they do not have to be top-notch dancers themselves. Choreographers spend many hours rehearsing with dancers/actors until every movement is perfect. When ready, they join the rest of the cast and the choreographer is responsible for making sure exits and entrances flow and stage positions are correct. Choreographers' jobs end on opening night and then they look for another production to choreograph.

REVIEW: This is a limited site that suffers from over-ambition. It begins with an impressive list of choreographers but the biographical details are often limited and are unreferenced. Users are invited to send in facts and these have been highlighted but this creates a disconcerting site that does not invite trust. Choreographers are invited to submit their details for inclusion on the list and this means that their level of training and experience varies considerably. The list is not searchable which means that it is difficult to find individuals with similar interests/qualities. The information on each artist is limited although the variety of experience and skills makes the site useful for a range of production needs.

The Choreographers’ Ink. concert will feature original pieces choreographed and performed by members of the class, as well as the premiere of a new dance by Mallardi involving masks created by artist Marlene Lundvall. Lundvall, a graduate of the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, teaches visual arts at Curry College, Milton, MA. A former dancer, Lundvall danced with Mallardi in New York City and with the Dance Circle of Boston and she has collaborated with Mallardi on many projects. "Claire is my spiritual sister–and a perfectionist," says Lundvall. Her masks for Mallardi’s new work are based on bird and animal images. "They are abstract, whimsical, scary–filled with fantasy. With her background in Claire knows how to make them come alive." Lundvall, who sometimes exhibits her masks as sculpture, was recently chosen by Malcolm Rogers, director of the Museum of Fine Arts, as one of 100 artists from 1,500 applicants to have her work represented in an exhibition at University Place, 124 Mt. Auburn Street. Sha Sha Ang ’97, who has worked with Mallardi for five years, says, "I keep coming back. I get more and more every year from my dance group. And from Claire I get not only the best instruction in composition and technique, but also a role model for dance, for art, and for life. She has great generosity of spirit." Ang, the producer of the Choreographers’ Ink. concert, will perform "Duet," a solo which she choreographed, as well as perform in Mallardi’s mask piece and in a duet of her original choreography.

Star-Bulletin WHILE you're keeping your eyes on the hands, Aunty Mae Loebenstein is focusing on the feet. "I'm a feet person," said the kumu hula, whose Ka Pa Hula O Kauanoe O Wa'ahila performs at the 34th annual Merrie Monarch Festival hula competition this weekend. "You dance with your feet. You don't dance with your hands really. It's your feet that take you around, not your hands." Hula choreography is about more than hands. It can embrace feet as well as lyrical body motions reflecting nature, and dynamic change in the pursuit of perfection. "When you put your feet down strong, you control your body for the hula," said the 85-year-old doyenne who's been crafting dances for more than six decades. "But if you're on your toes, you're kinda little wobbly, yeah." She teaches dancers to plant both feet flat and sway into their steps. She emphasizes a natural, controlled hip movement, as if dancers are floating across the stage. The feet don't skid, they don't tap, they don't jerk. The torso is pa'a (not bobbing) and hand movements are very subtle.

What is your specific area of research (include the name of your faculty mentor and/or laboratory)? Under the direction and guidance of Professor Donald McKayle, the UCI Etude Ensemble has had the opportunity to partake in research regarding marketing and performance as professional dancers. In this field, technical training as well as exposure to the community of dance is essential in order to succeed. By traveling as a pre-professional dance company, the ensemble has had numerous opportunities to perform for/with top professionals in the field, take classes from master teachers, and audition for professional companies, increasing our marketability as dancers for the years following graduation. As chair of the Bare Bones Dance Theater, I am also heading research pertaining to concert performance and choreography. With the generous help from UROP, we are able to produce a dance concert, completely independent from the Claire Trevor School of the Arts. This project includes finding a theater, stage managers, lighting designer, publicizing the event, auditioning the dancers, auditioning the pieces once the choreography is completed, raising extra money through fundraising for scholarships, creating a gala evening, obtaining music rights, and learning how to produce a professional dance concert. This is the fifteenth year that this project has been active in the undergraduate community and it continues to grow and improve each year.
