Institute of the Brothers of the Christian Schools
NATURE AND OBJECT The Institute of the Brothers of the Christian Schools is a society of male religious approved by the Church , but not taking Holy orders, and having for its object the personal sanctification of its members and the Christian education of youth, especially of the children of artisans and the poor. It accepts the direction of any kind of male educational institution, provided the teaching of Latin be excluded; but its principal object is the direction of elementary gratuitous schools. This congregation was founded in 1680, at Reims, France, by St. John Baptist de La Salle , then a canon of the metropolitan church of that city. Being struck by the lamentable disorders produced among the multitude by their ignorance of the elements of knowledge, and, what was still worse, of the principles of religion, the saint, moved with great pity for the ignorant, was led, almost without a premeditated design, to take up the work of charitable schools. In order to carry out the last will of his spiritual director, Canon Roland, he first busied himself with consolidating a religious congregation devoted to the education of poor girls. He then seconded the efforts of a zealous layman, M. Nyel, to multiply schools for poor children. Thus guided by Providence, he was led to create an institute that would have no other mission than that of Christian education.

    Edmund Ignatius Rice
Founder of the Institute of the Brothers of the Christian Schools God was evidently calling him. Rice settled his worldly affairs, his last year's business (1800) being the most lucrative one he had known, and commenced the work of the Christian schools. Assisted by two young men, whom he paid for their services, he opened his fist school in Waterford in 1802. In June of this year Bishop Hussey of Waterford laid the foundation stone of a schoolhouse on a site which he named Mount Sion. The building was soon ready for occupation, but Rice's assistants had fled and could not be induced to return even when offered higher salaries. In this extremity two young men from Callan offered themselves as fellow-labourers. Other workers soon gathered round him, and by 1806 Christian schools were established in Waterford, Carrick-on-Suir, and Dungarvan. The communities adopted a modified form of the Rule of the Presentation order of nuns, and, in 1808, pronounced their vows before Bishop Power. Houses were established in Cork, Dublin, Limerick, and elsewhere. Though the brothers, as a rule, made their novitiate in Mount Sion and regarded Rice as their father and model, he was not their superior; they were subject to the bishops of their respective dioceses. In 1817, on the advice of Bishop Murray, coadjutor to the Archbishop of Dublin, and of Father Kenny, S.J., a special friend, Rice applied to the Holy See for approbation and a constitution for his society. In 1820

    Welcome to Cascade Christian Schools
Enrollment for 2003-2004 is here! In mid-1990, three church-related schools in Pierce County realized the commonality of their schools' missions and their shared desire to meet the needs of children. These people of vision from Cascade's three founding churches (Puyallup First Assembly of God, now Destiny Christian Center ; Spanaway Assembly of God, now Sound Life Church of the Assemblies of God ; and the People's Church, now Covenant Celebration Church ) unified their efforts to launch a new school system. Two years later, Cascade Christian Schools was incorporated as an independent, interdenominational school district with a seven-member school board and pastors' council. Today, Cascade Christian Schools is a thriving school district serving almost 2,000 students in five campuses located in Puyallup, Tacoma, and Spanaway.

    A Teacher Speaks Out
on Christian Education Come, ye children, hearken unto me: I will teach you the fear of the LORD. (Psalms 34:11) Cecilia A. Reed
Contents Preface What Makes a School "Christian"? "Here, fix my kid!" top
Preface I had already been teaching for several years when I was suddenly called to enter the field of Christian education. In Michigan I had taught in the towns of Coldwater and Quincy; then, after moving to Massachusetts, in the Brockton and Boston public school systems. But it was shortly after I came to know Jesus Christ as my Savior and Lord in 1982 that I heard an announcer on Boston’s Christian radio station WEZE advertize an opening at Brockton Christian School. At the same moment, unexplainably, I knew that I was the one who would be hired to fill that opening. The Lord had spoken in my heart with his "still small voice" and called me. But that didn’t mean that I would find it easy to secure the job. I was behind the wheel of our car when I heard the radio announcement, so I wasn’t able to write down the phone number or address, both of which went right out of my head. In fact, not even remembering the name of the school, I drove first to another institution at the north end of town. Yes, they were a Christian school, but, No, they had not run a radio ad, and, No, they had no openings for teachers. Finally, I located Brockton Christian School at the city’s south end. A number of others had already applied for the position, I was told by Dr. Ballweg, the administrator. He handed me an application form.

A breakfast snack is prepared for those who are ready to eat. We have a weekly menu which has a nice variety of breakfast foods. At 8:45 am we have our all-school devotional time in the sanctuary. We invite parents to join us. We sing praise songs, have a Bible verse, and we recite three pledges. We pledge our allegiance to the Holy Bible, to the American Flag and to the Christian Flag. We always close with a "please and thank you" prayer. Classes are then dismissed to their classrooms. We have dedicated teachers who love the students and provide rich activities to enhance learning. When you visit our classrooms you may see a group of children planting flowers and vegetable seeds in different containers. You may see another group of children in music class with our in-school music teacher enjoying a ribbon praise dance. You may see another group of children really involved in finger painting or easel painting. Another group of children may be using measuring cups and making play dough with their teacher.
