LETTERS FROM THE CLASSROOM
June 21, 1999 Dear Friends, My three years of teaching middle school in Tunica, Mississippi are coming to a close. Whenever my faraway friends travel to my classroom, they are changed. They are changed by my students, by the wide open space, and by the stories they hear. I am lucky, dropping any of those friends back at the airport, that I am the one who gets to stay here, that I am the one who gets to go back to the classroom the next day. One student turned 13 yesterday. I ask, "What was the best part about your birthday?" "Living through another year," is never taken for granted. The students who enter my room every weekday help me to believe in the potential of a single life, something akin to love. My students have never made me believe that they are less capable of achieving success than anyone with more money or time. We travel, write, think. We shocked the staff at a Memphis bookstore when over 100 of us, whispering and laughing, piled into the place to sit and listen as hard as we could to Nikki Giovanni reading her poetry. We display thick love, and sometimes stubborn passion. Our last classroom visitor was a professional songwriter. In the middle of one of her songs, Angie started crying. By the time the song stopped, all her friends were concerned. "Do you want to talk?" I asked this eighth grader. "I want to write," she replied, taking out a piece of paper and continuing to cry while she wrote. My students have known since the first day how much I believe in the potential of reading and writing as tools for making sense of the world and acting upon it.

62. Christmas Message
Merry christmas and Happy New Year, and remember that just by your thinking of Beeasy on yourself, and bless even your mistakes they often teach you more

My Christmas Message by Brad Jensen
As Christmas comes this year, I am thankful for my many friends. I have learned to say the same thing over and over again,
without fear of repeating my self, for behold all things are new. So here once again is the little bit I know about who I am and
why I am here. Each of us is a world to himself or herself, in God where we
live and move and have our being. When you give, you are giving to yourself. As much as possible,
give with no strings attached, freely and completely. Treat everyone you meet and everyone you think of as if they are
bearing a gift from God to you, because they do. God (that is, the innermost source of life and love within
yourself) treats every thought you think, as a prayer about you. There is no receiving, there is only giving from one part of you to
another. The universe you see is your own invention, and it is
cooperative and supportive. Act as if, and you will do. Do not try to make decisions for others or change what they
think. You will only make yourself unhappy, and confuse them about their own responsibility for their life. Trust in God's

63. Toys That Teach!
Every year I get one of my nephews a Leap Frog product for christmas. Their readingproducts get my thumbs up. I hate toys that teach just the letter names
http://teachingheart.net/toysthatteach.html
Toys That Teach! Children love toys and we want them to love learning just as much! So, make learning fun with a toy and help plant a love of learning in your child. As a teacher and a new parent, I am always looking at toys and wondering... would this make a good learning center in my classroom?, would my students benefit from this toy?, would my students enjoy this toy?... As a result, I have decided to list some of the best educational toys I have found. They would be great in your classroom or your home. I have to start with Leap Frog products. I can't say enough about these great toys. My first experience with Leap Frog is when I bought the Learning Pad for my K-3 classroom and used it as a center activity. I wrote up some comprehension questions that the students could answer after they finished a story. I changed the books twice a month (allowing all the students to get a turn on each book). It was great to see my struggling readers using the sound-it-out function when they came to a hard word. Leap Pad hooked me to Leap Frog. Next, I was buying and exploring more of their products. Every year I get one of my nephews a Leap Frog product for Christmas. Their reading products get my thumbs up. I hate toys that teach just the letter names - "This is the letter A." Who cares what letter it is, the important thing is that the student sees the letter and hears the sound it makes. Then when they see a B they can say, "that's a B it says /b/ as in ball". I was so thrilled to see that Leap Frog products do just that. Also, I think it is funny when parents get so thrilled that their child can sing their alphabet - they have them sing it to everyone, over and over again. I always think (but keep it to myself) why not go a step further and teach them what the letter looks like and the sound it makes. Sure they can sing it, but it doesn't help them develope reading skills if they can't see the letter and say the sound it makes. Okay, I'll get off my soap box now. My point is Leap Frog will help students or your child learn effective decoding skills that will make them strong readers. GO LEAP FROG!

Let's Go Christmas Shopping
24 November 1999 by John Martellaro Contributing Columnist print format email this story talk U.P. # 78 "Dum vivimus, vivamus!" - "While we live, let us live!" Star, Glory Road Silver Bells...Silver Bells... I vividly remember the first time my Dad took me Christmas shopping to buy a present for someone else. I was about seven, and at that age, one is accustomed to being on the receiving end of presents from parents and Santa. But my dad, being wise and thoughtful, decided that I was old enough to learn how give a Christmas present as well as receive one. City sidewalks, busy sidewalks... So off to downtown South Bend we went one brisk December evening to the venerable and long since gone Robertsons department store. It was a classic adventure, right out of a Norman Rockwell painting. It was snowing ever so lightly, and there was a light coat of snow on the sidewalks. There were Christmas lights wrapped around the lamp poles, pine wreaths in the glass entrance doors, and decorated Christmas trees all about the store. My dad slipped me a five dollar bill, and we started scouting around for a present for mom. It's Christmas time in the city...

What should you teach your children?"
These are some of the questions we will seek to answer in this Bible-Believers Guide to Santa Claus.
for non-commercial personal educational use. "There is a way which seemeth right unto a man,
but the end thereof are the ways of death."

(Proverbs 14:12) "Thus saith the L ORD , Learn not the way of the heathen, and be not dismayed at the signs of heaven; for the heathen are dismayed at them. For the customs of the people are vain: for one cutteth a tree out of the forest, the work of the hands of the workman, with the axe. They deck it with silver and with gold; they fasten it with nails and with hammers, that it move not."
    (Jeremiah 10:2-4)
    PREFACE
I had hidden myself in there, with a chair in front of it, before everyone came into the room. Then I made a noise like something coming down the chimney and pushed the chair away and started ho-ho-ho-ing. I came out and passed presents around to all the children and then went back into the fireplace and pulled the chair back across it. My [assistant] then said something to the effect of: "Let's go outside and watch him fly away." And they all went out on the front porch. He said, "There he goes.....Did you see him?", and I heard the children agree that they saw him fly away even though they did NOT!

    Russian version
    CHRISTMAS MESSAGE
by His Holiness Patriarch Alexy II of Moscow and All Russia
to archpastors, pastors, the monastics and all children
    of the Russian Orthodox Church

The day-spring from the East our Saviour
has visited us from on high,
and those in the darkness and shadows have found the truth:
for the Lord has been born from a Virgin.
Hymn of Light for the Feast Day
Beloved in the Lord Your Graces my brother archpastors,
all-honourable fathers, beloved-of-the-Lord monks and nuns, pious laity – children of our Holy Mother Church who are dear to my heart! I congratulate you on the great and joyous feast of the Nativity of Christ. The holy night of the Nativity is for us every year an eternal and living reliving of that night when the angels first sang, 'Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace among men with whom He is pleased.' In a wretched cave of Bethlehem the Maker of Heaven and Earth, the Beginning of all beginnings, He Who is from all ages, is born. He is born on earth in order to become like all people in all things save sin. On this holy feast day before our mental gaze there appears the Infant God lying in a manger, as touching and defenseless as all children. The almighty God conceals His power and glory for the sake of the human person in order to accomplish the great deed of redemption and to return to our lives its lost meaning by revealing to us an image of righteousness and sanctity which is accessible to all people.

Actually, Don Rand cut three Christmas rolls: two A-rolls and one G-roll. I loaned him one of them. I just found the fourth unknown Christmas roll in a batch of 50 old rolls I just bought. It is Clark number 513, and is companion to Clark 514, another Christmas roll. It now appears that Clark made three Christmas A- rolls. The G-roll was arranged by Dave Junchen and is super. It was arranged for Ed Freyer because he could not find an original Christmas G-roll. Now if someone can find a Capital Christmas roll then I hope it would be good, and recut. The 50 old rolls I bought without labels have been mostly Mexican rolls. They must have made a ton of Mexican rolls. There is also a G-roll for the Kiwanis. It has three tunes on it. 76. 'Tis The Christmas Season - Holy Spirit Inspired, At Barbara's Entourage!
Do we teach our children that christmas is the day that we christianscelebrate the birth of Jesus? We should teach our children
    http://www.entourages.com/barbs/Christmas.htm
During this time of year, we begin to sense a change in the air. The weather begins to change and some of us have snow in our yards. One gets the feeling that Christmas is in the air and it gives us a sense of expectancy. Seems that, when the cold weather rolls around each year, we just assume Christmas is "right around the corner". Even before Thanksgiving has come and gone, the malls begin to dress up for Christmas. The Christmas trees are decorated, garland is everywhere and the lights are turned on. The Christmas season has begun, and Tom Turkey isn't even out of the oven. Please rate this site at Best Christmas Giveaways 10-Best 1-Worst So our houses are all aglow with lights everywhere, the Christmas tree has been decorated, and we are into the spirit of the season. What is there left to do? Why go shopping, of course!! We have gifts to buy for all our family members and the time is growing short. Just what do we buy them? Doesn't matter as long as there is a nice gift under the Christmas tree Christmas morning. Just to see those faces light up means the 'world' to us. There is no feeling better than seeing your children's eyes light up with excitement, their voices ring with laughter, when their dreams are realized on Christmas morning. Off to the malls we go with our lists in hand. The children have told us what they want under the Christmas tree, but we, as parents, know what's best for our child. Do we give them that dreaded toy they have yearned all year for after seeing it on a television program, or do we give them something constructive, like a computer game for learning or maybe a new bike? Sometimes we are guilty of falling under the pressure of the Christmas spirit so we won't disappoint our children and buy that dreaded toy. But then, when the day is gone, the ribbons and paper have been put in the garbage and the excitement is no longer there, that toy they longed for seems never to hold their attention for long.

Many of us have fond memories that include family members travelling to be together for the holidays. It should be a special time of year for everyone, each with his or her own pleasant memories. It’s kind of like that for me – although I am sure that my Christmas memories are not quite what most people would consider "normal". One of the things I love about Christmas is seeing all the children again. They are more fun to play with than the adults are. And they show their true feelings of appreciation for the gifts they receive. Here are two examples of how loving and honest children are: I had a next door neighbor who was around 7 years old when I came up with the perfect gift idea for him. He was a good kid – not destined to be a punk or a gang-banger. I knew he loved to make noise more than anything else in the world, though. I knew this because he would make so much noise inside his house that his mother would relocate the noisemaking activity to the outside of the house. This was usually at the crack of dawn on a Saturday or Sunday morning. Where I was raised, the houses are only a few feet away from each other. Oh, boy was he loud!! When he was loud enough to wake me up - but apparently not quite loud enough to disturb his mother - I would ask him questions. I didn’t really even want to talk to him. I just wanted to increase his volume until his mother told him to be quiet, then I would go back to sleep.

How the Unit Worked The Beginning:
At the beginning of the unit, we decided that the first thing we needed to do was to develop a set of understanding goals from which to work. Together, we determined what we most wanted the students to understand about desktop publishing (which you can see in the Understanding Goals section of this picture), and then we decided that Kirsten would do the actual teaching of content one day per week so Susan could learn the basic desktop publishing skills along with the students. Together we planned the individual weekly lessons, covering specific aspects of each program that built on each other. The students had very specific assignments and learning goals to accomplish each week to ensure that they could move on to the next application and/or skill required for completion of the final product. When we met each Sunday for a few hours to plan, we would start out thinking about Teaching for Understanding and how to establish our goals for following week. But we always seemed to digress from TfU to language that seemed more natural and to more basic conversation about how to respond to this behavior problem or that language problem. It was frustrating because it often seemed that there were many other variables having to do with basic classroom survival more than solid learning goals. It was a struggle to find the right balance between trying to work TfU into our classroom practice versus simply trying to keep kids in the class and help them understand what we were saying.

    Teach Kids Compassion At Christmas
With Christmas just around the corner, children are busy writing their wish lists, but the holidays also are the perfect time for parents to teach children to reflect on those who are less fortunate. That spark of compassion must be cultivated, says UAB child development expert Jerry Aldridge, Ph.D. "As the old saying goes: There's more caught than taught, and children generally learn compassion by watching their parents sacrifice for others. Parents should let their children see them visiting a homeless shelter, collecting can goods or making donations to a charity." Aldridge says that as the children grow older, parents should make sure that they continue talking to their children in a positive way about giving.
