The Mighty Fall december 16 @ 1.25pm
We start this four part journey with a tour of the vast and stunning woodlands of North Yorkshire National Park. Every November Forestry Commission ranger Iwan Downey oversees the cutting of thousands of Norway spruce, or 'traditional Christmas trees', as they are more commonly known. The area is also known for producing some of the largest specimens - some of which can cost up to a thousand pounds each. We follow Iwan as he takes up deep into the dense woods to search for the elusive monster tree.
The Cropton Chainsaw Massacre - december 16 @ 1.30pm An eerie silence pervades the plantations of Cropton Forest in Yorkshire , but the stillness is suddenly broken when a chainsaw splutters into action, sending its screaming crescendo echoing throughout the surrounding woodland. Cutting trees can be a tiresome way of making a living, and this second film offers a unique insight into the routine physical effort that goes into providing us with our much loved Christmas tree.

Botany under the Mistletoe
Twisters, spitters, and other flowery thoughts for romantic moments
By Susan Milius In a down-under flipflop, the December-blooming Christmas mistletoe in southwestern Australia grows into a tree that parasitizes a network of little plants. The Nuytsia floribunda , which can reach 30 feet high, preys upon grass and even the domestic carrot. (Del Wiens) A holiday merrymaker loitering under the mistletoe may not be thinking much about parasitic plants. That's a loss, because the world's mistletologists are making wondrous findings about the more than 1,300 species they study. Some of the plants have flowers with trick openings. Some shoot their seeds farther than most watermelon spitters can spout. Some mistletoes grow as parasites on other parasitic mistletoes. And some give North Americans and Australians yet another way to misunderstand each other. All in all, when you bump into someone under a suspended sprig, there's a lot more to say than "Kiss me, you fool."

It's strange, writing these first words, like leaning down into the musty stillness of a well and seeing my face peer up from the waterso small and from such an unfamiliar angle I'm startled to realize the reflection is my own. After all this time a pen feels stiff and awkward in my hand. And I have to admit that this notebook, with its wilderness of blank pages, seems almost more threat than giftfor what can I write here that it will not hurt to remember?
You could write about now, Eva said, about this time. This morning I was so certain I would use this notebook for studying that I had to work to keep from scoffing at her suggestion. But now I see she may be right. Every subject I think offrom economics to meteorology, from anatomy to geography to historyseems to circle around on itself, to lead me unavoidably back to now, to here, today.
Today is Christmas Day. I can't avoid that. We've crossed the days off the calendar much too conscientiously to be wrong about the date, however much we might wish we were. Today is Christmas Day, and Christmas Day is one more day to live through, one more day to be endured so that someday soon this time will be behind us.

Sudden Oak Death
Tens Of Thousands Of Oaks Have Died In California
by Linda Perkins
Large numbers of tanoak, coast live oak and black oak trees are dying in coastal areas of California, in an epidemic known as Sudden Oak Death. As I was completing this article, there were three important new developments. Oregon announced a quarantine on oak products from California. UC Berkeley announced the discovery of the Sudden Oak Death pathogen in rhododendrons found in a Santa Cruz nursery and in Europe, suggesting a new mode of transmission and escalating the SOD problem to a new level of crisisÑperhaps to a level at which controlling the spread of the disease becomes impossible. And finally, the federal government announced that $3.5 million will be funneled to California to fight the epidemic. Why has this outbreak, first noted in 1995, had so little attention from government officials for so long?
It Started With The Tanoak
"There is not a more admirable hardwood in all the West...a tree with a magnificent bole and sumptuous foliageÑevergreen and darkly glittering above, and a beautiful silvery white beneath (from the dense coating of snowy wool). Long erect spikes (catkins) of white flowers light up the tree like candles at Christmas; and the fruit, a long, strong, darkly polished acorn, stands erect in a handsome burry cup." This vivid, wintry picture of a tanoakÑpenned in 1950 by Donald Culross Peattie in A Natural History of Western Trees, a book noted equally for the beauty of its prose as for the nicety of its scienceÑcould not be less apt when applied to the same species found in today's forest: the lowly tanoak, a tree not magnificent, but a tall and spindly pole or a brushy sprout that has seized the niche created in the forest by the excessive removal of redwood canopy.

Cellulose Dreams in Southern Mexico
By John Ross
San Cristobal, Chiapas, Mexico Soon after the horrific Christmas-time massacre of 46 Tzotzil Indians in the Chiapas highlands by a paramilitary death squad almost certainly armed by the state security apparatus, the newly appointed governor met with the entity's three Catholic bishops, to pray for peace and reconciliation. Also in attendance was the Cardinal of Monterrey, Adolfo Suarez Rivera, a senior member of the oligarchy that has run Chiapas for the past century and a half. The Cardinal brought with him his good friend Alfonso Romo, whose Pulsar corporate empire includes brokerage houses, cigarette manufacturing, real estate in the north of Mexico, timber holdings in the south and paper production. The tycoon was on the platform to preach peace too reconciliation through investment and employment. In a region of abjectly poor Mayan Indians, and in association with powerful U.S. pulp and paper producers (Simpson and Louisiana Pacific are mentioned in a company prospectus), Pulsar proposes large-scale junk tree plantations (largely eucalyptus) to generate jobs for tens of thousands of disgruntled indigenous people. Pulsar already projects enormous plantations dedicated to cellulose production in neighboring Tabasco state, where it now has 2,500 acres under experimental species in Balancon, near the Campeche border.

Ancient Bristlecone Pine Forest, California Discovery Walk This is a self-guiding nature trail amid the ancient Bristlecone pine (Pinus longaeva ). These twisted, gnarled trees live in the White Mountains near the city of Bishop, California. They have lived here for over 40 centuries! Some were living when the Egyptians built the pyramids! It is totally mind boggling to think about the things that have come and gone in the lifetime of these trees. This trail is in the Schulman Grove at an elevation of 10,000 feet. The wind can be very strong here and the weather unpredictable, so come prepared. The Discovery Walk was a wonderful trail and affords sweeping views of the area and close up views of these ancient giants. The first tree to be dated at over 4,000 years old is in this grove and was given the name of pine alpha. Be sure to check it out! NBH tip: The visitor center at the Schulman Grove is great. The rangers are very informative and you can learn a great deal from the many displays. Take your time on this trail, as the air is very thin at this altitude. The trail can take a lot out of you even though it is less than a mile long. Above all else please show respect for these spectacular ancient pine. They deserve it!
