Elsewhere on this web site we discussed how health problems have varying degrees of severity. There is obviously a continuum in the severity of illness. Some are so mild that the body can recover on its own, while others are so severe that they can result in death. In a sense, the various degrees of health problems are the focus of different industries. This Degree of Illness Is the Focus of The body can correct the problems on its own under the present circumstances. Motivational Speakers : The body can correct the problems on its own under improved circumstances (such as diet, exercise, and rest). Diet and Fitness Experts : The body cannot correct the problems on its own, but they can be corrected with restorative medical treatment since there is little, if any, permanent damage. Restorative Medicine : The body cannot fully recover because there is permanent damage of part(s) of the body (requiring treatment for life).

Mourning the Loss of Good Health The loss of your health can take you through the stages of grief. In 1969, Dr. Elisabeth Kubler-Ross proposed 5 stages of death and dying in her book On Death and Dying . Most of us are familiar with what is often called 'the five stages of grief', which are:
  • Denial Anger Depression Bargaining Acceptance
  • Since this book was published, Dr. Kubler-Ross's work has been applied to the many situations of change people experience in a lifetime, including onset of a chronic illness. There is no time limit set for each stage, as every person progresses towards acceptance of their illness at their own pace. Some people may experience more than one stage at a time, or in an alternate order. Critics argue that the steps are too rigid, and are not applicable to the grieving process, yet people all over the world have found comfort in her work.

ANOREXIA Healthful Diet Aids Memory-Impaired Seniors Source: Tufts University
September 7, 2000 (Reviewed: January 2, 2003) A study in the Canadian Journal of Public Health reports that an inadequate diet can compound the health problems of seniors with age-related memory loss and even hasten death. Nutritionists consider the factors assessed in this studylow albumin, declining weight, poor appetiteas "red flags" that signal an underlying issue, such as chronic illness or poorly fitting dentures, that can interfere with a person's ability to eat well. While it is not always possible to fix everything that's wrong with a person's diet, this study shows that nutrition status can affect the overall health of memory-impaired seniors. In the abstract, the solution seems simple, but anyone who cares for persons debilitated by an illness such as Alzheimer's disease knows that getting them to eat an adequate amount of food can be an ongoing struggle. They're often less able to chew and swallow without choking, and may experience dulled senses of taste and smell that can make once familiar foods unappealing. To add to the problem, people absorb and utilize certain nutrients less efficiently as they get older, so they don't necessarily get the full nutritional benefits of all the foods they eat.

Linda Lazarides' Diet for Chronic Fatigue and Fibromyalgia What is Chronic Fatigue Syndrome? This is when leading a normal life leaves both your body and mind feeling exhausted most
of the time. Your muscles feel weak, and sleep may not refresh you. Many people with this condition are bed-bound. Chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS) sufferers usually also suffer from a chronic muscle pain known as fibromyalgia, and subsidiary symptoms which vary from one individual to the next, including chronic headache, joint pains and irritable bowel syndrome. In the UK CFS is also known as M.E. (myalgic encephalomyelitis). It often seems to develop after a feverish illness such as flu.
The body produces energy from food by turning it into glucose, which is processed by the mitochondria - tiny units within our cells where a series of chemical reactions takes place. Energy production can stop if any of these reactions is blocked. Very small amounts of cyanide, for example, can kill by completely stopping one of these chemical reactions. Without energy, none of the body's processes can take place.
The muscle pain in CFS is thought to be due to the build-up of lactic acid which occurs when alternative energy-making pathways are over-used. It is in fact the same muscle pain which all people experience after over-exertion.

Fasting needs to be done with care. An issue that people rarely consider is the dangers of coming off a fast. When a person comes off the fast too quickly, the benefits can be lost, or deep-seated weaknesses in the body can resurface resulting in confusing illnesses. One of the services that I provide personal support during a fasting. Being a health practitioner whose work revolves around cleansing the body at the cellular level, I have come to believe that humans have a greater potential to live healthy, pain free, lives, into their 100's than we typically see happening around us. I encourage you to give cleansing a try! What does Kristina Amelong offer in addition to colon therapy? Because our health depends on many factors, creating a healthful lifestyle can sometimes seem overwhelming. We can begin the process by eating well. When the body doesn't receive proper nutrition, its systems are more susceptible to illness, injury and fatigue.
A healthy diet is the foundation for optimum health. This is why nutrition is at the heart of my practice. Whole foods keep the body and mind functioning at their best, enabling a person to concentrate on those aspects of life most important to them. During each appointment, with or without colon therapy, I take a look at your health and nutritional history.

It has been nearly two decades since C. Orian Truss MD, an allergist in Birmingham, Alabama presented to a medical forum his observation that depressed patients are affected by a yeast organism called Candida albicans. This yeast was not a new or unique discovery as it had been treated by gynecologists and pediatricians for years in the form of vaginitis in women and thrush in infants. What was remarkable about Truss's report was drawing the relationship between clinical depression, a "mental" disorder and yeast, an infective organism usually associated only with superficial human infections. Truss presented a series of papers on the injury the yeast organism Candida subjects the human body to in the Journal of Orthomolecular Medicine.

Lupus is often thought to be a disease that only woman in their 20's-30's develop, however, while 90% of the people that suffer from lupus are woman, children and men suffer from lupus as well. Just what is lupus? Lupus is a disease that causes the immune system to attack the body's own tissues and organs, which can include the kidneys, heart, lungs, brain and blood or skin. The immune system normally protects the body against viruses, bacteria and other foreign materials. In an autoimmune disease like lupus, the immune system loses its ability to tell the difference between these foreign substances and its own cells and tissues, the immune system then makes antibodies directed against itself. “Lupus” is Latin for the word “wolf”. It was first given this name in 1851 by Frenchman, Pierre Cazenave because the butterfly rash, that is common among lupus patients, looked like the facial marking of a wolf. However, more recently you will see the symbol of a butterfly being used in place of the wolf.

However, doctors strongly recommend that people with arthritis or related conditions follow a diet based on variety, balance and moderation. A balanced diet can help you feel better and stay healthy; prevent chronic diseases, such as cancer and cardiovascular disease; and be a positive step toward managing your arthritis. Good nutrition can be a challenge. People with certain kinds of arthritis may have difficulty preparing foods because of joint pain, swelling, limited mobility and fatigue. Some arthritis medications may lessen appetite and cause stomach upset. Pain and the depression that can accompany chronic illness also can affect a person’s appetite or eating habits.

Should Persons with CFS / FM Take The smallpox Vaccine?
The threat of bioterrorism is constantly looming, and one of the likely threats is smallpox. This infection has been eradicated by aggressive vaccination policies, in the 1960’s, and public vaccination was discontinued in 1972. Thus, no one born after 1972 is immune to the disease. Those who had been vaccinated previously probably retain some residual immunity. If exposed to smallpox, these vaccinated individuals would probably have milder or non-fatal infections. There is no therapy for smallpox, and the fatality rate in non-vaccinated populations is 20-30%.
The US stock of smallpox vaccine is sufficient to treat the entire US population. Starting in 2003, members of the Armed Forces will be vaccinated; then the vaccine will be offered voluntarily to first responders, medical personnel, vital personnel, and lastly the general population. Who should or should not accept this vaccination?
The vaccine is actually a live vaccinia virus rendered immunogenic but not infectious. It is administered by placing a drop on the skin, after which a 5 mm by 5 mm area is macerated with a special fork-like needle.
Vaccination of naïve individuals is usually associated with a flu-like illness as well as irritation or pox-formation at the vaccination site. Other side effects include lymphadenopathy and generalized rashes.

HEALTH BEHAVIOR NEWS SERVICE Just in time for New Year's resolutions to kick in, a health care task force convened by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services announced this week that there is good evidence that extended behavioral counseling can help patients who are at known risk for heart disease and other chronic illnesses. The task force said, however, that there is insufficient evidence to gauge the effectiveness of brief, routine counseling among healthy adults. After reviewing 35 years' worth of diet counseling studies, the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force concludes that intensive diet counseling can help at-risk adult patients eat less fat and more fruits and vegetables, concluding that this counseling can be delivered by primary care clinicians or by referral to other specialists, such as nutritionists or dietitians. The review and the task force's recommendations are published in the January issue of the
