MAY 6, 1998 NEWS Cinco de Mayo marked by memories Paul Concannon For The Daily Related Links: Students, community residents celebrate Cinco de Mayo early Mexican History Directory O n a historically important holiday for Mexican-Americans, one University department concentrated its efforts on the future of Chicano studies. To celebrate Cinco de Mayo, the Chicano Studies Department, along with La Raza Student Cultural Center, hosted a series of events Tuesday to celebrate the holiday. Cinco de Mayo which means the fifth of May in Spanish commemorates a Mexican victory in 1862 over the French army. The Chicano movement in the 1960s adopted the holiday as a symbol of overcoming oppression. More than 20 people gathered in Coffman Union to listen to keynote speaker Raymond Paredes, chairman of the Center for Chicano Studies at University of California-Los Angeles, retrace the rocky road Chicano studies programs have traversed and the problems still confronting them. Paredes, a professor of English and American Studies at UCLA, gave the keynote address, titled "Chicano Studies at the Cross Roads: Past, Present and Future," as part of La Raza's final day in a five-day series of Cinco de Mayo events. Paredes said in the late 1960s and early '70s most of the universities that set up Chicano studies programs did so in response to political pressure and without an appropriate academic structure in place.

Cinco de Mayo, May 5th, is a national holiday for Mexicosecond only to September 16, Independence Day. It was on this day, in 1862, that a small group of poorly trained Mexican peasants, under the command of General Ignacio Zaragoza, bravely and fiercely fought for their freedom against a regiment of 6,000 French soldiers under the command of Napoleon III.
Historical Background
"After Mexico gained it's independence from Spain in 1821, it faced internal power struggles that left it in a volatile state of rebellion and instability for years." (Internet: Pasmanick, 1992) In 1846, the Mexican government, under the dictator Santa Anna, went to war with the United States. As an outcome of that war, Mexico lost a large amount of landthe land we now know as Texas. In 1854, Juan Alvarez and his troops led a successful revolt to drive Santa Anna out of power. One of Alvarez's strongest supporters was a man by the name of Benito Juarez, a Zapotec Indian leader. In 1855, Juarez became the minister of Justice under the new regime and issued two new controversial laws. One denied the right of the church and military courts to try civilian cases and the other made the sale and distribution of church lands legal. Many people disagreed with these laws and for three years a civil war raged between the two sides.

From: Kimberly Herbert ( kimberly@wcc.net
Date: Sun Jun 17 2001 - 19:29:30 PDT During May, I heard a piece on NPR about Cinco de Mayo. Apparently it is a
very minor holiday in Mexico especially compared to their independence day
in September (think Flag Day compared to July 4th). Certain companies have
really marketed Cinco de Mayo because it creates a "long weekend" holiday
half way between (roughly) Easter and Memorial Day. Interesting perspective.

Arizona Daily Wildcat Jennifer Schowengerdt, a junior majoring in Spanish, makes a snow cone as part of the Cinco de Mayo celebration on the UA Mall yesterday. The party was organized by JUNTOS, a mixture of six Hispanic groups on campus.
With food, dance and mariachi music, Mexican students at the UA showed their cultural pride yesterday in celebration of Cinco de Mayo. "It's a day to pay tribute to our past," said Maricela Meza, an undeclared freshman and member of Kappa Delta Chi. Meza's sorority joined five other University of Arizona Hispanic fraternities and sororities on the UA Mall for the Second Annual Cinco de Mayo celebration on campus. Between 11 a.m. and 2 p.m., members of Juntos, a united Hispanic student organization, sold snow cones and typical Mexican food to students passing by. As a band played traditional mariachi music, Juntos members socialized and munched on "durros," a crunchy Mexican snack. "An event like this is to teach people what we're about, so that people can see what music we listen to, our dance, and the food we eat," said Juntos member Alex Rios, an accounting and finance junior.
