    Mechanics Civil Engineer

After the Leaving Cert, I went to UCC where I did Civil Engineering. When I graduated in the late 1980's, it was a great time to start in the field. Ireland was just beginning to get substantial funding from the EU for infrastructure improvements. The rebuilding of Ireland's infrastructure is a huge programme that will continue for several years. Many more roads, bridges and buildings must be built if Ireland is to develop to its full potential. This means that future looks bright for those who choose a career in Civil Engineering. Mechanics is an area of physics that is important for civil engineers. Static and dynamic loads must be considered when constructing structures. As will be seen in the following homework assignment, an understanding of dynamics is also important to understand the operation of the tools that we use. One of the most exciting projects that I have worked on has been the GAA's new stadium. Piles were used to form the foundations of the major structural elements of the stadium. Piles are reinforced concrete pillars that are driven into the ground. The pile's purpose is to reach firm boulder clay or rock so that the whole structure is well supported.
