It would be hard to find a nation that does not memorialize war in some way. This fighting and marking of battles seems to be deep within the nature of humans. When the gods were assumed to have the same failings as humans, they were said to fight and bicker amongst themselves constantly, sometimes causing and influencing battles among humans just to settle their own feuds. (Clio also notes, however, that in human battles it was common practice to claim the gods were on your side, so the record is open to dispute.) Latter-day gods decry war, as a whole, but war does not seem to be lessened because of it. Clio can only assume that humans like to fight. She does notice a change in the milestones. In bygone days, a war holiday was likely to mark a major victory; now a war holiday is more likely to mark the end of a conflict. Celebrating the end of war is an improvement, for certain, but Clio notes that war never seems to end for very long. Perhaps the problem is that humans forget so quickly. Clio will speculate on this in more depth in the future, when she writes about the Jewish Holocaust. In brief: Humans are constantly conflicted between the desire to forget their dark moments and the need to remember them. Generally the former wins. Wisconsin's Civil War Memorials Memorial to 6th Wisconsin Battery at Lone Rock When you drive into the village of Lone Rock from the north on highway 130 you pass by what is known as "Battery Park." A bronze monument some 15 feet high is easily visible on the east portion of the park. No one is buried there, but on the monument is this inscription: Erected to the Memory of the 6th Wisconsin Battery Light Artillery photo by Bruce Laine The 6th Wisconsin Battery was organized by Henry Dillon of Lone Rock, who was afterwards elected as captain. Most of the recruits came from Richland county though there were some from adjoining counties. It was the first to receive its full quota of men and should have been numbered the 1st instead of the 6th. The Battery left Lone Rock on September 30th, 1861, going to Camp Utley at Racine where it remained until March 1862, when it was sent south, taking part in many fierce battles. On the monument are listed four important battles in which the 6th Battery took part: Vicksburg, Jackson, Corinth and Mission Ridge. The monument contains the names of the enlisted men as well as the officers of the Battery. It also has a metal cast of Capt. Dillon and underneath his likeness it says he died January 10, 1882, at the age of 53 years and four months. On March 1, 1882, a GAR post was organized at Lone Rock with a membership of 22 with N. B. Hood as commander. It was given the name of Henry Dillon Post No. 24, in honor of the late captain. While the Battery Grounds has nothing to do with cemeteries it should be noted that members of the 6th Battery found final rest in many a burying ground in Richland County. Capt. Dillon is buried in the Button cemetery not far from his farm home in Buena Vista.

K, 4 th MI Infantry The two armies that marched into Pennsylvania in the summer of 1863 were well acquainted with each other. The Union Army of the Potomac , commanded by Major General George G. Meade, had been at the literal mercy of the Confederate Army of Northern Virginia , commanded by General Robert E. Lee, for nine months prior to opening of the Gettysburg Campaign. Though the Union often outnumbered Lee's forces on any given battlefield, Lee's brilliant tactics, the leadership of his generals, and the spirit of his troops had won numerous battles for the Confederacy, including two major victories in Virginia prior to the opening of the Gettysburg Campaign. The Confederate invasion of Maryland and Pennsylvania in the summer of 1863 gave Lee's victorious soldiers an added boost, yet the Union Army was far from being a dejected lot. Though they had suffered terrible losses during the previous eight months of the war, most of the soldiers in the Army of the Potomac reasoned that their defeats were caused by poor generals and interference from politicians, and not by their will to fight. With the Confederates now on Northern soil, the Union men found their roles to be one of liberation, unanimous in their determination to drive Lee's Confederates out of the North.

Mike Cox - Davis' book serves as near-perfect source on Civil War battles It is a singularly striking illustration for a book, one capable of latching onto the imagination and not letting go. The small, matter-of-fact caption in the upper right corner that explains this large two-page color photograph belies the image's power: "Excavated Battle-Damaged Union Relics.'' The first object in the picture to catch my eye was a rusty canteen, an imprecise triangle punched in its side. Comparing the artifact with a fine print description beneath the caption, I learned that the hole had been caused by a flying shell fragment. Someone had probably been carrying that canteen on their shoulder at that time, which doubtless explains why a relic hunter found it years later on a Civil War battlefield. The shrapnel probably continued on into the body of the soldier toting the canteen. Another rusty canteen in the picture had a neat bullet hole punched in it. The illustration also features a rifle, its barrel more than likely exploded by a young, scared soldier who in the heat of battle forgot his weapon was already loaded and loaded it again before finally pulling the trigger. Then there is a rifle barrel, roughly bent into the shape of a question mark. At the point where the barrel is bent the most is a six-pound cannon ball, which fits into the space perfectly. Some soldier had been holding that weapon, barrel upright, when a cannon ball struck it!
