War Memorials
Throughout the Bronx, neighborhoods have erected memorials to those who have served in various wars and conflicts ranging from the Civil War to the Gulf War. According to the AIA Guide to New York City , the Bronx County War Memorial (1925) is: "One of the handsomest and best maintained monuments in the entire city." Located in Pelham Bay Park at Shore Road and the Bruckner Expressway, the monument is a 75 foot Corinthian column which supports an 18 foot bronze Winged Victory resting on an 18 foot Vermont marble pedestal. At the time it was erected, the site was referred to as the "World War I Memorial Grove in Pelham Bay Park." The architect of the monument was John J. Sheridan, the sculptor was Belle Kinney. The Memorial was dedicated to the country's sons who died during World War I and the site was planted with rows of several hundred trees to approximate the traditional headstones of a military cemetery.

Civil War Battles and Campaigns
Civil War Research Collections CIVIL WAR BATTLES AND CAMPAIGNS Poet-nurse Walt Whitman termed it a "strange, sad war." But to many, the American Civil War was the most exciting and memorable event in their lives. Three million men volunteered to fight: most were farmers who had never left home prior to the 1861 bombardment of Fort Sumter; most predicted the North-South conflict would be a minor skirmish, relatively bloodless and soon over. Blood ran into ink, as surviving veteran officers and private soldiers, scholars and "distinguished men" of the era endeavored to turn the trauma of battle into substance. brings these writings together. Military and social historians alike will find that these narratives and histories, grouped by state, encompass every aspect of the war, from the personal to the historical. In-depth materials on the daily events in a campaign include casualty lists, battle commencements, troop movements and engagements, and narratives of the fight. Military scholars will be especially interested in material on the demise of Napoleonic military combat and the rise of total war. First coined during the Civil War, the term "total war" comprises battle on all fronts—from mountain to sea, from battlefield to plantation, from soldier to civilian, from man to woman and child—and in every manner possible. Narratives reveal how the Civil War did away with the statesmanship of the old military campaign through combat tactics like the use of land mines and innovations like the Williams machine gun.

"Memorial Day derives from the time of the Civil War, also called the War Between the States or the War Between the North and the South. Many Americans died in this war, more than all other wars combined. After the war, on May 30, 1868, in order to heal the nation, flowers were put on the graves of both sides of the war. Later it was expanded to be a remembrance of all those who died fighting the nation's battles. Now it is observed on the last Monday of May, and is primary the holiday that starts the summer vacations and the summer season. " - Per Larry Freeman

A.E. Mathews. "The Siege Of Vicksburg." A very rare drawing of the siege of Vicksburg based on a sketch made on the spot by A.E. Mathews of the 31st. Ohio Voluntary Infantry. It shows the Union forces encircling the Confederate's defensive works. The Union encampments, the crater left by the famous explosion in the defenses, and other features are shown with excellent detail and explained in a lettered key under the title. In the foreground are shown a number of Union soldiers hiding behind bushes, a position perhaps taken by Mathews when he made this accurate and precise drawing. A rare and fascinating Civil War artifact.

In-depth analysis of the Civil War's greatest battles show the epic conflict like never before. HistoryChannel.com Store
America suffered its greatest losses in this conflict involving its own people. While the North and South were bound by a common goal during the American Revolution, the issue of slavery became increasingly divisive, culminating in fracturing relations between the two regions.
Signs of trouble emerged as early as 1820, when the Missouri Compromise attempted to solve permanently the issue of whether or not slavery would be allowed to expand into territories newly acquired by the United States.
The election of an anti-slavery president, Abraham Lincoln, in 1860, led South Carolina to set the precedent for secession from the Union. Mississippi, Florida, Alabama, Georgia, Louisiana and Texas quickly followed South Carolina’s example, and the Confederate States of America was formed.
Warfare broke out between the Union and the Confederacy on 12 April 1861 when the Confederates fired upon Fort Sumter. Over the next five years, Americans would fight Americans in some of the most tragic battles of American history, including the Battle of Antietam, which would be remembered as the bloodiest day of the war.
