As a peace agreement was signed between government and rebels in Sierra Leone in July 1999, BBC News Online's special coverage looked at one of Africa's most obscure conflicts, which has left tens of thousands of people displaced and unknown numbers dead or mutilated: Worse than Kosovo?

"If the situation in Sierra Leone is so bad, how come there are 50,000 Nato troops in Kosovo and just a few dozen unarmed UN observers in Sierra Leone?"
- Mark Doyle reports.
A cruel war

"When the rebels reached the city, in a matter of days they are said to have amputated the limbs of around 1,500 people"
- Jeremy Vine in Freetown

Sierra Leone's eight-year conflict is a complex one that has its roots in years of poverty and misrule, and the unrest in neighbouring Liberia.

Carlos, refugee worker These are Colombia's displaced people, the strikingly-visible evidence of the chaos wreaked by this civil war. If peace efforts fail, there are fears that thousands more could soon be driven from their homes across the Colombian countryside, to end up here. "I think that soon, around 15,000 displaced people are going to arrive here," said Carlos, the head of an organisation which represents refugees from the civil war. Gun culture "It's extremely sad because many innocent people are going to die. If there's no peace, what can we hope for?" asked Carlos gloomily, when it looked like the peace talks were going to collapse.

With the exception of a fragile peace established by negotiations between southern Sudanese insurgents (the Anya Nya) and the Sudan government at Addis Ababa in 1972, and lasting until the resumption of the conflict in 1983, southern Sudan has been a battlefield. The north-south distinction and the hostility between the two regions of Sudan is grounded in religious conflict as well as a conflict between peoples of differing culture and language. The language and culture of the north are based on Arabic and the Islamic faith, whereas the south has its own diverse, mostly non-Arabic languages and cultures with few exceptions non-Muslim, and its religious character was indigenous (traditional or Christian). The origins of the civil war in the south date back to the 1950s. On August 18, 1955, the Equatoria Corps, a military unit composed of southerners, mutinied at Torit. Rather than surrender to Sudanese government authorities, many mutineers disappeared into hiding with their weapons, marking the beginning of the first war in southern Sudan. By the late 1960s, the war had resulted in the deaths of about 500,000 people. Several hundred thousand more southerners hid in the forests or escaped to refugee camps in neighboring countries. By 1969 the rebels had developed foreign contacts to obtain weapons and supplies. Israel, for example, trained Anya Nya recruits and shipped weapons via Ethiopia and Uganda to the rebels. Anya Nya also purchased arms from Congolese rebels. Government operations against the rebels declined after the 1969 coup, and ended with the Addis Ababa accords of 1972 which guaranteed autonomy for the southern region.

Brown exhorts the people of Georgia to arm themselves against Northern "aggression"; a newspaper reporter describes the "Great Railroad Chase," in which a band of Northern "spies" stole a locomotive in northern Georgia; Dr. Joseph Jones views the horrors of Andersonville prison, where so many Northern soldiers died; citizens in Rome, Marietta, Atlanta and Covington describe the devastation of Sherman's march; and Alexander H. Stephens, Vice President of the Confederate States, recalls his arrest and imprisonment.

Major General Robert Patterson – His illustrious military career included service as a Colonel of the Pennsylvania Militia
in the War of 1812. He served as a Major General of Volunteers during the Mexican War.
At the beginning of the Civil War; he was asked, by this friend, General Winfield Scott, to command the
Department of Pennsylvania, which included Pennsylvania, Delaware, and Maryland.
His first conflict of the Civil War brought him face to face with Confederate Colonel Thomas J. (Stonewall) Jackson at Harper’s Ferry.
After some initial success, Patterson was to contain General Johnston and keep him and his Army from reaching Bull Run.
Patterson appears to have been totally out maneuvered by Johnston. By not achieving this objective, Patterson was relieved of his command.

Brigadier General Francis Engle Patterson – The son of Major General Robert Patterson.
He fought as an Artillery Lieutenant in the regular Army with his father in the Mexican War. He resigned from the Army in 1857,
only to return in April of 1861 as Colonel of the 17 th Pennsylvania. In April of 1862, he became Brigadier General U.S.V. and commanded
the 3 rd Brigade of the Army of the Potomac. He fought at Williamsburg and Seven Pines.
While defending Washington, he was falsely informed that the enemy was at Warrenton junction.
Acting on this information, he withdrew his troops and as a result was relieved of his command by General Daniel E. Sickles.
With this incident still being contested, he retired to his tent where he was found dead shortly thereafter.
By appearances, it was an accidental discharge from his own revolver.

Unit VI: "Now We Are Engaged In A Great Civil War," 1848-1880
Question/Problem 4: In what ways were people affected by the Civil War?
Contents Objectives Description of lesson/activity Resources
Objectives: The students will be able to: 1. identify strengths and weaknesses of the Union and Confederacy. 2. describe how people were affected by the Civil War. 3. explain why the Civil War is referred to as the first modern war. 4. analyze photographs and draw conclusions about life during the Civil War. 5. create a visual representation depicting the war's impact on people. Description of lesson/activity: 1. In Question/Problem 3, students looked at the causes of the Civil War. In Question/Problem 4, students will examine the war itself. Students have a natural interest in this topic and the teacher can capture this interest by focusing on how the war affected individual Americans. The following is a guide for teaching the Civil War. 2. Background on the war is essential. The teacher should have students examine the strengths and weaknesses of the Union and the Confederacy. Students should study one or more battles of the war to understand some of the strategy that shaped the course of the war. The study of the battles of Gettysburg, Shiloh, and Antietam would be useful for this purpose. 3. The focus of this question should be on the people whose lives were impacted by the war. There are a variety of ways to do this:

She lived in Tenancingo, a small town in central El Salvador, at the time of the photo. Before the war, she and her extended family lived in a hamlet just north of the town and participated in Christian communities led by lay catechists trained in liberation theology. Many members of her family were killed by government forces during a period of indiscriminate violence that culminated in the bombing of Tenancingo by the Salvadoran Air Force during an occupation of the town by guerrilla forces. Photo: Elisabeth Jean Wood Some of the most devastating and protracted conflicts in history have not been between opposing nations but between factions within the same nation. Clashes such as those in Bosnia, Angola, and the Middle East illustrate the fact that civil war has become a growing threat to contemporary civilization. In fact, 95 percent of all conflicts since the end of the Cold War have been civil wars. One SFI visiting research professor, Elisabeth Jean Wood, is bent on finding out what factors permit peace to come to countries caught in the vise of civil war. She brings to the topic scientific objectivity laced with compassion borne of experiencing the ravages of war first hand.

One million people died, four million others got displaced and the same number of families are separated throughout the country as a result of 27 years of armed conflict in Angola , disclosed "Doctors Without Border", a non-governmental organization.
According to a report titled "Angola, after war the abandonment" released on Thursday in Luanda, war in Angola was one of the longest and most violent in Africa after de-colonization causing a complete disarticulation of the society and the communities.
"Doctors Without Border" calls on the Angolan government and other NGOs to speed up and increase emergency aids with a view to stock food and first need goods at displaced's camps and sheltering areas due to the rainy reason that makes difficult access to those zones.
"Doctors Without Border" has been working in Angola for 19 years.
