Cyberschool, an internet-based program in Oregon, is connecting students all around the world and creating a global classroom.
By Kristina Rudinskas
"To give our children the best education, we must help them to harness the powerful forces of technology. That's why we've challenged America to connect every classroom and library to the Internet by the year 2000. For the first time in history, children in the most isolated rural towns, the most comfortable suburbs, and the poorest inner-city schools will have the same access to the same universe of knowledge." President Clinton's radio address Feb. 8, 1997 President Clinton's promise sounds good to educators across the nation. The promise of new technology in the classroom allows some educators to expand their lesson plans, strengthen their curricula and entice their students with more information. But the Internet's revolution in the connected classroom is still in its infancy. Experimental programs such as the Cyberschool in Eugene, Ore., offer students around the globe an opportunity to earn high school credits by taking classes on the web.

Speed up your Classroom Internet Access by 100 Times!
For less than $1000
The common feature amongst all of them is that they allow many users to connect to the Internet via one phone line. All of them act as "intermediate buffer" between the users and the Internet itself. Proxy Servers act on behalf of the Internet – hence the name "proxy". Some Internet Service Providers (ISP) also use a proxy. When you think you are accessing the "Internet", you are often accessing the proxy on their computer. The ISP pays less for their data downloads and you get information quicker – everybody is happy.
According to the Oxford …. A cache is "…a hiding place for treasure". A treasure it certainly is!! The key to survival in the Internet classroom is the proper handing of caching. You MUST know what your computer is doing with its "hidden treasures" and how to make it do what you want.
The caching feature of browsers is the secret to FAST Internet access in the classroom.
Your ISP has a big one Too!

FOR RELEASE:
March 1, 1999 Contact: David Thomas
CLASSROOM INTERNET ACCESS NEARLY DOUBLES According to a new survey, the nation's schools are closing in on the National Educational Technology Goal of connecting all classrooms to the "information superhighway" by the year 2000. "Vice President Gore and I have set a goal of connecting every classroom in America to the Internet by the year 2000," said President Clinton. "I am pleased that these data show that more than half of all classrooms are connected - nearly twice as many connections as last year. And thanks to new "e-rate" discounts that help schools and libraries connect to the Internet, we will reach our goal by the year 2000. By giving our children the skills they need to succeed in the jobs of the future, we will build a stronger nation for the 21st Century." An issue brief, released by the U.S. Department of Education's National Center for Education Statistics (NCES), showed that 51 percent of instructional rooms classrooms, computer or other labs, school libraries, and media centers had Internet access in 1998. This is nearly a two-fold increase from 27 percent in 1997, and shows steady growth from 1994, when only three percent of instructional rooms were connected to the Internet. "We're making significant strides to get technology to the place where children learn the classroom," U.S. Secretary of Education Richard W. Riley said.

Mysteries

in the

Classroom

Having been around just a very few years, the Internet, as we have come to know it, has grown into a virtual smorgasbord of educational information. It is up to teachers, as users, to determine if the information is valid and worth sharing in a classroom environment. Many teachers today are still novices on the Internet. Sites that instruct as well as inform can be very helpful. The Busy Teachers' Website is designed to do just thathelp busy teachers learn to use the Internet and integrate it into their classroom projects. As a teacher, I have found the Internet to have many and varied uses. The most helpful, I would have to say, is the sharing of ideasonline!! Educational discussion rooms and listservs such as Classroom Connect and Teach Talk offer forums for the online exchange of valuable information. The Alphabet Superhighway is a great site for elementary school teachers to visit! Once there you'll find an educational website sponsored by the U.S. Department of Education, assisting teachers, and students as well, in creating, locating, and communicating

Reference Shelf
Classroom Internet Integration
One important goal of EDSITEment is to help educators integrate the Internet as a standard classroom resource. Once you tap into this seemingly boundless source of ideas, new experiences, and information, you will recognize that it holds a unique potential for inspiring real intellectual curiosity in your students and for stimulating multidimensional intellectual growth. You can use the Internet to:
  • Create increased sharing of the responsibility for learning among students and teachers.
  • Engage students in authentic tasks, designed to help them understand how scholars, for example, use primary materials to interpret events or human interaction or expressions.
  • Encourage students to work in teams, sparking questions and ideas off of each other, offering them an experience similar to modern-day practices in the workplace.
  • Enhance students' natural curiosity and love of exploration.
