Classroom Connect Announcement
* DATES: *
Club Net runs in Fall '98 with five projects designed especially for grades
4 through 9.
Participants will post work to the Club Net Web site on October 2, October
23, and November 13. Posting dates for Spring '99 are February 5, February
26, and March 19. When a group of diverse classrooms are linked together via the Internet, there is tremendous potential for motivating, real-world problem solving. Club Net is a new series of interdisciplinary projects from Classroom Connect designed to help teachers and students get the most out of such a partnership. Signing up for a Club Net project links your classroom to a group of other classrooms around the country. Throughout the project, the classes in your club work together to research a variety of current issues, brainstorm and share ideas, and create meaningful end-products. Each Club Net project includes a 64-page curriculum guide full of hands-on activities, teaching notes, and options for extensions and side trips.

CLASSROOM INTERNET ACCESS NEARLY DOUBLES
According to a new survey, the nation's schools are closing in on the
National Educational Technology Goal of connecting all classrooms to the "information superhighway" by the year 2000. "Vice President Gore and I have set a goal of connecting every classroom in America to the Internet by the year 2000," said President Clinton. "I am pleased that these data show that more than half of all classrooms are connected - nearly twice as many connections as last year. And thanks to new "e-rate" discounts that help schools and libraries connect to the Internet, we will reach our goal by the year 2000. By giving our children the skills they need to succeed in the jobs of the future, we will build a stronger nation for the 21st Century."

Internet Resources for Conducting Readers Theatre Lila Carrick The Internet can be a valuable source of information for teachers who use or plan to use Readers Theatre in their classrooms. This article provides a brief description of Readers Theatre and its many benefits for literacy learning, and goes on to describe Internet sources for scripts and for information on implementation, additional classroom applications, and assessment. The article concludes with an annotated list of useful Web sites for Readers Theatre.

About Readers Theatre Readers Theatre introduces the element of drama into literacy learning and magically transforms the classroom into a stage. During Readers Theatre time, the reader is at center stage, totally absorbed in reading. The reader is a star. The element of drama enables students to realize that reading is an activity that permits experimentation they can try reading words in different ways to produce different meanings. Using volume, pitch, stress, and intonation, readers delve into the Readers Theatre text, making printed words come alive and giving their characters life. As they practice their roles, readers are also given the opportunity to reflect on the text and to evaluate and revise how they interact with it ( Carrick, 2000

unless a teacher is in the classroom with the user. If a substituteteacher is in the classroom, the Internet will not be used.
http://www.vvm.com/~jbean/internetpolicy.htm
NOTE: Students will also be required to have a District Internet Policy on file in the office. This is a part of their student handbook. During this semester, your son/daughter will be given the opportunity to learn how to use the Internet for research and general information. The Internet is an excellent tool for research; however, due to its uncensored nature, there are some rules that MUST be followed during school use. The following are rules in this classroom: Students will not enter chat rooms unless specifically authorized by the teacher for classroom use. Any online chat or bulletin board activity will be carefully supervised and only for the purposes of gathering information for an assignment. Students will not enter morally questionable areas. If a student should accidentally encounter an area of which they are unsure, the teacher should be immediately notified to assist in making the decision. This would include, but is not limited to, vulgar language and/or pictures that are inappropriate. Students will not print except by teacher permission only.

Several of the most frequently asked questions appear below with possible solutions. Hopefully you will be able to make use of these ideas.
Here are the questions:
What can students do with the Internet? How do we ensure that students stay on appropriate sites? How can we get all students through a one-computer center or mini lab (10-15 computers)? How do you keep one computer in your classroom used effectively most of the school day? ... How should students save work?

    Introduction
The internet is one of many teaching resources you use in your teaching. The internet is a research tool which should be used along with the tools you are accustomed to using such as library books, encyclopedias, etc. It can also assist you as an educator to provide activities for your students. It provides current and extensive information on most every topic that you can think of. The internet may be used to be an addendum to your lessons or it may be the primary tool for your units and projects. Some activities that you can assume the internet will assist in are those which require the following:
  • Information Collection
  • Information Analysis
  • Investigation of a chosen topic
  • Comparing and contrasting information
  • Using current data not easily available otherwise.

This type of system has several other advantages. Since all the data is in packets, connection points within the Internet (the electronic post offices called routers) can be programmed to keep certain packets out or to let certain packets in. This allows subnetworks within the Internet (So-called Intranets). These subnetworks can be secured from unauthorized access and can block unwanted packets or packets from unwanted sources. This also aides in the filtering of pornographic materials and packets from undesirable sights on the web.
The key to a powerful Intranet is a solid, well designed infrastructure which is completely adherent to Internet standards in its entirety. This infrastructure is now in place at CVUSD.

Just as students need to cite the books and periodicals they use to support their research, they must also cite online sources of information. Classroom Connect developed the following method to help students cite Internet sources as accessed through their Internet browsers. This method makes it easy for educators to check the veracity of every online source their students cite. We've also included new information specifying how to cite the graphics, sounds, and video clips students retrieve for use in their multimedia presentations. EMAIL
