Introduction Design Tools The Learning Spiral Classroom Resources

This section provides the tools, materials, and resources to help you design thinking-centered curriculum. You'll find worksheets, planners, and instructional materials that focus on putting theory into practice at the classroom level. The design tools in this section have been used to help a wide range of educators, both nationally and internationally, construct thinking-centered lessons, activities and projects. The Curriculum Design section is structured to include materials directly related the 4 approaches to teaching thinking outlined on the Ways of Thinking section. But there's lots more here too! In addition, you'll find posters, handouts, and resources geared toward developing students' problem solving, reasoning, and decision-making skills as well. How to use the Curriculum Design Tools Section
  • Use this section to orient yourself with a number of practical, hands-on instructional materials, lesson plans, and classroom resources to help you cultivate thinking in your classroom. Get ideas on how to construct thought-demanding tasks that will deepen students' understanding.
  • Activate and broaden your use of knowledge about the teaching of thinking by actually constructing thinking-centered curriculum. The philosophy behind this section supports a "learn by doing" approach when learning how to teach thinking.

How can we best support USING the tools?
Let's do smart things with stupid technology today, rather than wait and do stupid things with smart technology tomorrow.
~Donna J. Baumbach~ The Failure and the Promise of Technology in Education by Al Rogers, Global SchoolNet Foundation "In my fifteen years of teaching teachers "about" technology, I have found it far more effective to show teachers how to teach writing using a word processor, rather than teaching them how to use a word processor, how to use a spreadsheet or database to collect and plot census data as part of a social science unit, rather than how to use the tool; or how to use the World Wide Web to develop incredibly rich professional dialogs between students as Web authors and their audiences around the World. When teachers are given (or take) the freedom to change how they teach... to move from "instructional deliverers" to "side-by-side learners," we see technology employed in drastically different ways... more akin to the ways other segments of our society using them." NCSI workshops help undergraduate faculty bring state-of-the-art technology tools to their science and math curricula McKinney, an Allen Harvey Broyles Professor of computational mathematics at Centenary College in Shreveport, LA, was a participant in one of the many workshops offered annually by the National Computational Science Institute (NCSI), a program aimed at helping undergraduate teachers from around the country learn how to incorporate computational tools into their mathematics and science courses. The program, funded by the National Science Foundation and administered by EOT-PACI partner Shodor Education Foundation, targets educators at institutions without significant technology budgets, including smaller colleges, Minority Serving Institutions (MSIs) and community colleges. Eighteen partners, including NCSA, participate in the project. The idea behind NCSI is that using technology in the classroom is the best way for students to learn about it. Robert Panoff, director of the Shodor Education Foundation, said the long-term goal of NCSI is helping faculty see that computational science is both content for the college curriculum and a methodology for investigating scientific concepts. He believes NCSI is necessary because of all of the changes that have occurred in computational science.

SMART Technologies Inc. and SMARTer Kids Foundation proudly support Intel Teach to the Future program in North America
More than US$300,000 in classroom technology donated to enhance learning environments San Antonio, TX - June 17, 2002 - SMART Technologies Inc. and the SMARTer Kids Foundation of Canada announce their joint donation of more than US$300,000 in interactive classroom technology to support the Intel Teach to the Future program in North America. Intel Teach to the Future is a worldwide program to help teachers integrate technology into instruction and enhance student learning. To date, 500,000 teachers in 25 countries have completed training through this program. Pre-service educators and in-service teachers participating in the Intel Teach to the Future program learn from other teachers how to effectively incorporate technology tools and resources into their lesson plans. Both students and teachers are clearly benefiting from this program. In a 2001 survey of U.S. teachers, conducted nine months after they completed the program, 84 percent reported that using computers improved their instruction and 80 percent found that computer-based lessons enhanced student learning. "SMART chose to participate in the Intel Teach to the Future program because of its reputation and dedication to improving education worldwide," says David Martin, chairman and CEO of SMART Technologies Inc. "The program's goals are in synch with SMART's commitment to enhancing the learning environment for both students and teachers."

    WELCOME TO:
This material is part of the NASA JSC document: SPACE EDUCATORS' HANDBOOK which is designated as document number OMB / NASA Report Number S677. CONCEPT Using the following HTML program familiarize the student with the design of manned spacecraft systems. Next, have the students sketch and analyze science fiction rockets, robots, etc. found in movies, comics, and novels. (SCIENCE FICTION / SPACE TECHNOLOGY : TOOLS FOR LEARNING features numerous examples of this process.) Ask the students to find: (1) What technology exhibited by these sci-fi devices is currently possible? (Study existing technology - space shuttles, space stations, lasers, robots - similar to the selected items.) (2) What is probably not possible with today's technology? (3) What new technology is needed to make the science fiction devices work? (4) Finally, for extra credit, design (add to the original sketch) items overlooked by the science fiction author or artist that should have been included to make the science fiction device work. SYSTEMS REQUIRED BY MANNED SPACECRAFT Spacecraft, like automobiles, require certain basic systems to function properly. Among these systems are: PROPULSION (engines), GUIDANCE (steering), LIFE SUPPORT (air to breathe, food and water), CABIN QUARTERS (manned operations and living area), COMMUNICATIONS (radio transmission and reception), THERMAL PROTECTION (isolation from the extreme temperatures of space as well as the heat of reentry), DISPLAYS AND CONTROLS (a means of flying/controlling and monitoring the status of the spacecraft's performance - switches and gauges).

T.E.A.C.H. District 86 Project Technology Enrichment Access for Curriculum at Hinsdale District 86 Project Hinsdale High School District 86 in the Chicago suburbs of Hinsdale Darien , Clarendon Hills, and Willowbrook , is a small but extremely well-funded school district. Because it draws its funding from the affluent communities that feed the district, Hinsdale District 86 enjoys an unusually high level of budget allocations for infrastructure and equipment, particularly in the area of technology. Both high schools in the district, Hinsdale Central and Hinsdale South, are well stocked with computers, visual media equipment, peripherals, software and other tools, and all are available to faculty and students. Unfortunately, technology dollars do not often cover the costs of implementation and curriculum coordination. Currently at District 86, there is a Technology Director who is mainly responsible for technical support and purchasing, but the district lacks a Technology Coordinator, or someone who is responsible for staff development and curriculum integration. The lack of this position has its biggest impact in the area of staff development, particularly when it comes to integrating new technologies. Teachers who have experience and advanced training are more likely to use the new technologies; however, most of the staff on both campuses may not be so enthusiastic.
