Classroom Activities
In addition to being a terrific toy, the Slinky is an excellent device for demonstrating various properties of physics. The Slinky, like all objects, tends to resist change in its motion. Because of this inertia , if placed at the top of stairs it stays at rest. At this point it has potential or stored energy . But once it is started down the stairs and gravity affects it, the potential energy is converted to the energy of motion or kinetic energy and the Slinky gracefully tumbles coil by coil down the stairs. Physical properties of the Slinky determine how quickly it moves under the influence of gravity . Although its movement may look simple, from a scientific point of view the motion is quite complex.

ThinkerTools II Project: Using Assessment to Foster a Classroom Research Community
In these classes, inquiry becomes the basis for developing an understanding of physics. Physical theories are not directly taught, but are constructed by students themselves. The idea is to teach students how to carry out scientific inquiry, and then have them discover the basic physical principles for themselves by doing experiments. Students carry out research in groups, using computer simulations and real-world materials. In their groups, they also create laws, models, and theories to account for their experimental findings. The groups then meet to conduct a research symposium. Here, as in a professional research community, the groups report their results and attempt to agree upon a model for the phenomenon under investigation. The criteria of assessment, such as "understanding the processes of inquiry," "using the tools of science," and "reasoning carefully," become the basis for evaluating the quality of the students' research. Students use them when carrying out their own research and when evaluating each others' work. Thus, the correctness of student-constructed models of force and motion depends on their using the criteria to evaluate the research findings of the different groups. Ready to Read * Ready to Learn
Hyattsville, MD - First Lady Laura Bush today announced her plans to focus America's attention on recruiting the best and brightest to the teaching profession and ensuring that all young children are ready to read and learn when they enter the classroom. "From the crib to the classroom, children need parents, teachers and others to help them prepare for success in school and in life," said the First Lady. "President Bush has a plan to help schools succeed in their mission to teach children. I want to help him keep that promise." Mrs. Bush made her plans known during a speech at Cesar Chavez Elementary School in Hyattsville, MD, a campus attended by primarily Latino and African American children. She was joined by Secretary of Education Rod Paige, and was introduced by the school's principal Adela Acosta.
