During high school, I would stay after practice to work with our kids program. I encourage youth coaches to invite the varsity wrestlers to work with your local kids program. When training young wrestlers, the more feedback they receive the better off they will be. The varsity wrestlers can serve as role models for the younger wrestlers and will also benefit from helping the kids. Also, encourage the youth wrestlers to attend varsity matches and vice-versa. Perhaps even develop a big brother program. Every summer during college, I ran my own day camps, worked at PennState Camps and took a team to Junior Nationals. I worked with kids in all different age groups, and these summers proved to be very beneficial and rewarding experiences for me. I enjoyed my work with the kids tremendously and saw how much the wrestlers benefited from their time on the mats. Summer is an excellent time for skill development. The kids are not busy with school and preparing for competition. The emphasis is on skill development, learning new techniques and having fun.

"Pitch Tracking" Great Drill For Hitters, Catchers, and Pitchers! Drill #2 Live "BP" FUNGO Great Drill For Defensive, Baserunning, and Batting Practice! This drill involves every player on your team working on either offensive or defensive skill development. You put your regular defensive lineup on the field. Your other players are going to fungo balls and run when they hit it. The pitcher will throw a 1/2 speed ball to your catcher. When the ball hits the mitt. The batter will then toss a ball up and hit it anywhere in fair territory. The goal of the defense is to hold the batters to no runs. The goal of the offense is to get basehits by hitting the ball hard enough to get on with a hit or error. Each batter becomes a runner after he hits and the offense is allowed 3 outs before you clear" the bases. The drill is over when the offense scores 5 runs or the defense records 18 outs. Drill #3 "Make Believe" Infield Great warm-up for certain situations Drill #4 "Japanese" Pitching Drill Great for developing control

Or it can be completely boring, especially with younger teams that have a good offensive push. Unlike the rest of the team, it is the final sole responsibility of the goalie to stop scores, so some consolation and praise are sometime necessary to retain self-esteem. A few tips: Goalies can only use their hands inside the penalty area, but can interact with the ball anywhere on the field. To handle the ball effectively young goalies are taught two hand positions, the W and the Heart. Many younger goalies try to trap the ball between their hands like catching a fly, rather than having the ball meet their hands. When retrieving balls in the air, it is a good idea for the goalie to jump with one knee pulled up in front of him. This discourages players from running into him and protects the goalie simultaneously.

Coaching Special Olympics Philosophy Coaching Styles General Tips
What makes a successful coach?
  • Knowledge of the sport Motivation to be a good coach Empathy-understanding thoughts, feelings, and emotions of your athletes

Philosophy
  • Successful coaches help athletes enjoy mastering new skills, enjoy competing with others and feel good about themselves.
Successful coaches not only are well versed in the technique or skills, they know how to teach these skills to people.
Successful coaches not only teach athletes the skills of the sport, tehy also teach and model the skills needed for successful living in society.
Successful coaches are those who can learn new skills, who are flexible enough to change old ways when change is needed, who can accept constructive criticism, and who are able to critically evaluate themselves.

Coaching Styles
  • Command Style: Coach makes all the decisions. Athlete's role is to listen, to absorb, and to comply. Prevalent in the past, it is highly visible among many professional, college, and highschool coaches. This style prevents athletes from fully enjoying sports (increasingly being rejected today.)
Submissive Style: Coaches who adopt this style make as few decisions as pssible. It's a throw out the ball and have a good time approach. Coaches are urged not to adopt this style.

The coach should be: a good role model a communicator prepared, organised and in control at all times sensitive Role Model Communication Organisation Sensitivity ... Management of Injuries Role Model The unspoken message given by appearance and the way a person acts is often more important than the spoken or written message. Dress well and appropriately, be prepared, appear confident, start and finish on time and be positive, pleasant and active. No particular dress code exists for indoor bowls. However soft soled shoes should be worn at all times in order to protect the mat. Make sure that your footwear is appropriate. As most bowlers deliver from a kneeling position, ensure your clothing is not too restrictive or revealing. As the role model, whatever you do will be copied by the players you are instructing. Ensure you teach them good habits right from the start.

    Techniques for Coaching Younger Children
    Terry Churchfield
Printer-Friendly Version Send this page to a friend One of the greatest rewards in life may very well be that of parenthood. Having the chance to watch your children grow from "demanding" infants to "demanding" teenagers may be life's greatest compensation. Perhaps second to that honor may be the distinction of being athletic coach to your son or daughter. The problem comes when it is not just your child, but 10-or-12 other children as well. Suddenly, there is a responsibility to many while you were struggling with parenting only one or two. Once you make the decision to coach, there is no other choice in the matter than to become something that you might not know how to be. Take it from one who has been there that this is not as tough as it may seem. First thing to remember is always be yourself. You probably already know the best lesson to learn. The problem is that most of us do not remember being seven-years old and being taken from the safety of the backyard and placed with strangers on a field bigger than the imagination. Try to see yourself through those innocent eyes, so eagerly watching the coach's every move, and try to become his or her favorite coach. The idea of being a "good person with the kids" is what T-Ball is really all about. There are indeed rules to follow. Spend a few nights reading a book or two about basic ball playing; however, when putting it altogether in your mind, do so as a seven- or eight-year old.
