    Where Cobras Are King
    By Mattias Klum
Capable of killing an elephant, these shy Asian forest dwellers have become entwined with some unflappable humans.
Get a taste of what awaits you in print from this compelling excerpt.
A man for whom cobras are family, village elder Komchai Pimsaimoon has spent years learning the rhythms of the serpent—what calms it and what makes it fighting mad. Mad was in force back at the boxing ring, where a now rested king whipped toward me on release from its wooden enclosure. Though I managed to skirt its strike, I took some comfort knowing I had cobra antivenom in my pack. Locals assured me that their herbal remedy was also on hand—just in case mine failed to work.

    The King Cobra snake
The heavy and mascular King Cobra can kill other snakes with its powerful venom. The snakes follow fangs grow to a length of 0.5 in. The Cobra punches them into its prey like hypodermic needles, and injects a powerful venom. The venom glands lie gehind the eyes. The snake can then dislocate its jaw to engulf large prey. The cobra uses its menacing hood to warn off other animals. Its neck spreads to form a hood with a double chevron marking on the back. Its skin is olive green, tan or black with pale yellow crossbands down the length of the body. The underbelly is cream or yellow. The cobra detects prey by flicking its tongue out to collect scents from the air. Inside the mouth, the tongue passes over the Jacobson's organ- a receptor that analyzes different scents. bodyOffer(3306) The King Cobra is mainly found is Asia, you can find it in clearings, amongst bamboo theckets and in the borders of the forest. In Northern India, the cobra can be found in forest, and up into the foothills of the Himalayas. Cobras can climb trees with ease, but will rarely do so unless chasing his next meal. Cobras can also be found on farmland and in outlying parts of villages. As forest are cleaned, Cobra are increasingly encountered by humans. The King Cobra preys on other snakes and lizards. It will attack venomous snakes and nonvenomous ones, such as small pythons. The cobra tracks prey by sight and by tasting the air with it's tongue. It strikes quickly and it's venom paralyzes the victims nervous system. The King Cobra can dislocate it's jaws like other snakes, and gradually work it's meal into its long stomach.

    Spitting Snakes
Three species of snake can spit or eject the venom in a fine spray, which is aimed at the eyes of an enemy and projected for distances up to 2.4 m (8 ft). If the venom gets into the eyes, it may cause blindness. The spitting is used only in defense and never to obtain food. Some cobras can spray their venom for a distance of up to 2.5 meters . This action is called spitting , but it does not evolve puckering the lips and blowing the venom outward . Spitting is a defensive behaviour that has nothing to do with killing prey. Spitting cobras bite and envenomate their prey just as do other venomous snakes. Two of the spitting-cobra groups are African: - One group is the African ringhal cobra (Hemachatus haemachatus) , and the second includes the black-necked cobra (Naja nigricollis), the Mozambique spitting cobra (N . mossambica) , the Mozambique red spitting cobra (N . pallida) , and the wEst African spitting cobra (N . katiensis). The third group is from eastern Asia and includes the golden spitting cobra (Naja sumatrana) of the Malay Peninsula and Sumatra, the Indonesian spitting cobra (N . sputatrix) of southern Indonesia, the common spiting cobra (N . philippinensis) and Samar spitting cobra (N . samarensis) of the Philippines, the Chinese and Indochinese populations of the Asian black cobra (N . atra), and some populations of the widespread Asian monocled cobra (N . kaouthia). These snakes live in areas inhabited by large herbivores that might trample them or large carnivores that might eat them, and thus use their venom defensively.
