I just received this note from Marc at " fosterparrots.com A 503-C NON-PROFIT AVIAN RESCUE ORGANIZATION "You won't believe the number of people looking to get rid of their cockatoos RIGHT NOW! I have NO homes or space available. We are heading for a crisis and I fear the worst is about to happen...." "After working with parrots for 30 years, I consider the Moluccan to be the most difficult of all the parrot species to successfully keep as a companion." Liz Wilson Most people not familiar with large parrots fail to see the "Big Picture Beautiful and Cuddly: These are the words normally used to describe one of natures most unusual parrots, the Moluccan Cockatoo. It's unusual in that it's one of the few "lap birds , and acts more like a dog than a bird sometimes. As babies, Moluccans so easily touch your heart that it's hard to walk away from them without taking one home. Their liquid eyes look like black pools of inquisitiveness as they carefully study your facial expressions, and you seem to be able to look right into their very souls. Both Moluccans and Umbrella cockatoos possess a sweetness that few parrots can match

Cockatoos!! Species: There are 17 species of cockatoos, most of which are in the genus Cacatua. Most are colored mainly in white, but others come in grays and pinks, blacks, and in the Palm's case, deep blue. Origin: Australia and the surrounding islands. Size: Ranging from the Goffin's, at about 12"-13", to the huge Goliath Palm cockatoo, at 27" long. Life Span: 40-60 years and up. There have been some reported cases of cockatoos living to be over 100, but most of these are unsubstantiated. Price: Expect to pay anywhere from $400 for an inexpensive Goffin's from a breeder, to around $1,000 for most cockatoos, to $1,500-$3,000 for a Galah or Leadbeater's, and up... Palms and Blacks would probably cost you around $15,000 or more apiece! Buying:
Cockatoos are probably some of the top birds that are re-sold as adults, when their owners get tired of their demands or find themselves in a situation where they can no longer cope with them. These birds *usually*, but not always, have some sort of behavior problem that is the reason for giving the bird up. Often, this is screaming. If you're considering one of these second-time-around birds, find out everything possible about the bird, and be ready to deal with some unforeseen behavior problems. Diet: Cages/Supplies: The larger the cage, the better, of course! Cockatoos are big birds! Goffin's, Galahs, and Lesser Sulphur Cresteds usually do fine in something about 2' x 2' x 3', but most larger cockatoos should really be in something at least 2' x 3' x 3' or larger. Plenty of toys are practically a necessity; cockatoos are BIG chewers and expect to replace these pretty routinely! A playstand is also a wonderful thing, and allows your bird someplace to be when he's not on the cage and you don't want him right on you (although that's probably where he'd prefer to be!).

5. Hornbeam Aviary - Breeders Of The Beautiful Cockatoo!
Offers information on species descriptions and care, along with pictures, and handraised babies.
http://www.hornbeamaviary.com
Jim and Katy McElroy returned to northern Ohio in the late 1970’s after having lived for several years in Perth, Western Australia. Soon after, to their delight, the pair of pet Greater Sulfur Crested cockatoos (C. galerita galerita) that they brought back with them produced youngsters . . . and Hornbeam Aviary was born. At Hornbeam Aviary, our goal has always been to produce a small number of healthy, well-socialized, parent-raised baby cockatoos from happy, unstressed parent birds. Instead of removing eggs for artificial incubation, we encourage our parent birds to feed and care for their chicks for four to six weeks or longer. Baby cockatoos raised in this manner are both wonderfully affectionate and refreshingly independent. They understand that they are birds, not people, and they grow up better able to cope with the complexities and puzzlements of living life as human companions. Our beautiful, healthy babies are raised in a large flight cage in our kitchen where they learn to interact with both their human caretakers and other baby cockatoos. They are permitted to wean at their own pace and only go to their new homes when we are certain they are ready. All of the baby cockatoos at Hornbeam Aviary come with lifetime technical support. Recently we have begun concentrating more on the less emotionally dependent cockatoo species such as Goffin’s, Bare Eyed, Citron Crested and Lesser Sulfur Crested because it is becoming apparent that Moluccans and Umbrellas often require more room, time, tolerance and commitment than even the most well-intentioned owners

Kakadus!
Fassung September 2001

Cockatoos
Cockatoos live in Australia and some islands of the South Pacific. There are also a great number of Cockatoos in captivity in zoos and as pets. Cockatoos have very strong bills made of hardened keratin. Their bills are usually beige or black, depending on the species of cockatoo. They all have four-toed feet. Two toes point forward and two toes point backwards, this allows them to grasp things quite well.
Cockatoos have long life spans, from 30 to 50 years, and some have survived in captivity for 60 to 70 years. All cockatoos have a bald spot on their head, covered by a crest of feathers. They have a down powder beneath their feathers which provides them with insulation to keep them warm. The down also sheds a thick powder, which the birds use to waterproof and clean their outer feathers. Cockatoos are the only parrots to have powder down.
Cockatoos are very intelligent birds, and can be quite comical. Their life cycle is similar to that of humans. They go through infancy, childhood, adolescence, young adulthood, middle age, and old age. They can even be trained to talk, though their voice is much higher pitched than that of other parrots.
You may think that all cockatoos are white birds with yellow crests, but there are many species of cockatoo. There are even black cockatoos, but they are rare, and most of them live in wildlife parks and zoos.

SULPHUR-CRESTED COCKATOOS
Cacatua galerita
    OTHER NAMES
White Cockatoo (Australia usage), Cocky, Greater Sulfur-crested Cockatoo (USA usage).
    SIZE
Length about 50 cm (20"), weight about 700 to 950 grams
    SEXING
The Sulphur-crested Cockatoo is monomorphic when young, but females may develop a lighter eye colour at around 8 or more years old.
    SUBSPECIES
Four subspecies are recognised, only two of which are native to Australia. These are the nominate subspecies, Cacatua galerita galerita , which is found in eastern Australia and is the one most common in aviculture, and C. g. fitzroyi , from northern and north-western Australia. C. g. galerita varies from fitzroyi by having a white eye ring rather than pale blue, by having a paler yellow colour to the ear coverts, and by having shorter crest feathers. The other two subspecies are Cacatua g. triton and Cacatua g. eleonora , which are only found in Indonesia and Papua-New Guinea to the north of Australia, and are not considered here.
    NATURAL OCCURRENCE
The Sulphur-crested Cockatoo is one of the icons of Australia's birds, instantly invoking images of the Australian bush. It is a common and widespread species, extending from Tasmania through Victoria and New South Wales to the northern most tip of Queensland, and though the northern part of the Northern Territory into the Kimberly area of Western Australia. Introduced populations are established near Perth, in Western Australia, and in New Zealand. The two Australian subspecies meet around the Gulf of Carpenteria, in northern Queensland, where their ranges overlap

Cockatoos are absolutely the cuddliest of all the pet birds. Most Cockatoos would be happy if you cuddled with them all day every day. The larger Cockatoos are also the loudest of any pet bird. A Moluccan Cockatoo playing with a toy is one of the funniest things you could see, but having a volume control for the bird would make it much easier on the eardrums. There are several different types of Cockatoos – some are very common and some are extremely rare. Most are mainly white with yellow or salmon crests, one is grey with a pink breast and some are black. They can range in size from about 12 inches up to 25 inches. Some of the common Cockatoos are the Moluccan, the Sulphur Crested, the Lesser Sulphur Crested, the Goffin and the Umbrella. As with all birds, Cockatoos need an appropriately sized cage, with plenty of room for climbing and playing. There should be lots of room for toys for him to play with, as Cockatoos love to play.

Welcome to World Kids Network Critters area. Come on in and learn all about the cockatoos.Bucky. Moluccan cockatoos are also known as Salmoncrested cockatoos.
http://worldkids.net/critters/pets/birds/bucky.htm
Bucky
The Moluccan cockatoo
This is Bucky! He is a Moluccan cockatoo. Moluccan cockatoos are also known as Salmon-crested cockatoos. Cockatoos are very funny birds. Bucky was especially funny, and quite smart. When Bucky first came to live with us, we knew very little about cockatoos. We certainly had no idea how smart they were.
Bucky was very young when he was captured in the wild and imported to the United States. He had one owner before he came to live with us. Cockatoos become very attached to their owners, even jealous. He quickly warmed up to us though, and his new home. It took a lot of trust on both of our parts. To gain Bucky’s trust, we would lay down on the floor next to his cage, and wait. Cockatoo’s are very curious birds, and it did not take him long to come down and see what it was we were doing. He tentatively crawled around us, watching, until he was certain we meant him no harm. We also learned to trust Bucky, and his powerful beak. It only took a matter of days, and we were all hooked.
Bucky certainly did not like being left alone in the house. When we would leave, we put him in his cage and closed the door, not realizing how smart this bird was. When we returned, he was out of his cage, shredding our drapes in the living room. We decided right then and there, that the clasp that held his cage door shut was not quite good enough. We tried a variety of ways to keep the cage door closed, but Bucky always managed to escape. We eventually got a padlock to keep the door shut when we were gone. We were so happy - ha! We had outsmarted the bird! No way he is getting out of a padlock. We made one minor mistake though, and left the key in the padlock.
