Coughs, Colds and More Serious Illnesses
Coughs, colds, sore throats and runny noses are common occurrences in the lives of children and usually are no cause for alarm. In some cases, however, coughs and colds are danger signs of more serious illnesses such as pneumonia or tuberculosis. Respiratory infections killed some 2 million children under the age of five in the year 2000. http://www.kyent.com/colds_sinus.htm
At one time or another, patients have blamed almost all discomforts of the head and neck on "Sinus". However, the term "Sinus" means a bony cavity next to the nasal passageway and its medical usage should be reserved for conditions involving this structure. It is a location not a medical condition. A "Cold" refers to an infection of the nose and throat. It is usually viral but may also be caused by a bacteria. Usually, patients with colds are febrile, have malaise and myalgias.
Types of Over-The-Counter Medications
List Of Over-The-Counter Medications
The problem with treating a "Cold" is it may not be a "Cold" at all. A simple sore or scratchy throat may be caused by Group A Beta Hemolytic Streptococcus. Unilateral sinusitis is a "Red Flag" and all patients should be evaluated for a foreign body and neoplasm. Patients at high risk for developing nasal carcinoma are those who smoke, are woodworkers, or are exposed to other carcinogens. Types of over-the-counter drugs used in the treatment of colds #1. Is this a laughing matter? We couldn't restrain a chuckle or two. In the medical journal Chest, vol. 118, 2000, a group of physicians* not only revealed that chicken soup worked on experimental cold symptomsbut actually came up with a list of brands that were graded for presumed effectiveness. And even morethey provided a recipe!
They also noted that it was an anti-inflammatory factor or factors from the chicken that caused cold symptoms. Popular belief is that cold symptoms are caused by the organism (bacteria or virus.) What they revealed is that the runny nose, the sneezing, the headaches, are caused by the body's attempt to fight the invader, not the invader itself.
Though they did not attempt to test aspirin as an anti-inflammatory remedy, it would seem that it too could be launched in the fight against colds. Yes, it sometimes is. But perhaps it could be taken even if a headache was not present?

Conventional treatment is by aspirin, antihistamines, or antibiotics; the latter cannot combat viruses, of course, but they may help to prevent bacterial infection. In acute cases, the remedies below are recommended. Specific remedies to be taken even 2 hours for up to 4 doses Cold comes on suddenly, especially after exposure to cold, dry wind, sneezing, burning throat, restlessness, symptoms worse at night Aconite 30c Cold comes on suddenly, with a high temperature, skin dry, hot, and burning, light hurts eyes, sore throat worse on right side, tickly cough, person very thirsty

Home Shop Cart Join our mailing list Search Products Guides for The most important fact behind a common cold is that the body is always rundown before it catches a cold. Most conventional treaments for colds make matters worse - it's much better to help the body's natural defences.... Diagnosis When one catches a 'chill' by exposure to cold air, air-conditioning, getting wet (especially in the head) etc., the body's energy is wasted in warming it up. As a result of that there is an acute loss of the 'inner heat' and the body gears up its resources to compensate for that. This makes the immune system vulnerable. Opportunistic viruses, present in abundance in the atmospheric air, then try to enter the body through the nasal passage where they begin to thrive. In a defensive reaction the mucous discharge in the nose is intensified to 'wash' the virus out. The hand wrestling match between the pathogenetic force (virus) and the sanogenetic powers (manifested through mucous discharge) is in full swing. In most cases the body wins and the virus is eliminated. If the body loses, the virus penetrate deeper into the throat, sinuses, lungs etc. causing inflammation of these organs.

Each year, millions of suffers, myself included, come down with a disease known as sinusitis, an infection of the sinuses. For those with chronic sinusitis, the news can be bleak: suffer with recurring infections on what is often a weekly basis or have surgery. Now, however, one man is suggesting there is a holistic cure for your allergy and sinus problems. The premise of Robert S. Ivker’s book Sinus Survival: The Holistic Medical Treatment for Sinusitis, Allergies, and Colds is that not only can “dietary and lifestyle changes significantly relieve sinus and respiratory disease,” but that simple things such as exercise can almost eliminate the horrible sinus pressure that can be so debilitating at this time of year. Thus, Ivker’s book is going to be the pick of the month for the Bella Online Cold and Allergy Book Group!

Colds and the ‘flu are acute viral infections of the respiratory tract. Influenza has a brief incubation period. The symptoms appear suddenly and while the virus enters the respiratory tract, it soon affects the entire body. The symptoms include fever, chills, headache, sore throat, coughs, gastro-intestinal disturbances, muscular pain, and neuralgia (nerve pain). Susceptibility to a cold or the ‘flu is dependant on an individual’s general state of health. Many people get exposed to the flu virus yet do not present with symptoms, due to their healthy lifestyles. Yet others will have poor resistance because of poor diet, continual stress or overexposure to environmental toxins. This is where Echinacea/Thuja Comp.

    Causes, Incidence, and Risk Factors
Colds are caused by more than 200 different viruses known as rhinoviruses. They are not caused by the same viruses responsible for influenza ("the flu"). Colds spread through exposure to droplets from the coughing or sneezing of others with a cold or by hand contact with objects contaminated by someone with a cold. The incidence of colds is highest among children, and the incidence decreases with age because immunity to the virus causing the cold occurs after the illness. Gradually, immunity to a wide variety of viruses that cause colds is developed in adults. On average, children have 10 colds a year and adults have 3.
