UPPER RESPIRATORY INFECTION (URI)) Runny or stuffy nose, sometimes with a fever sore throat cough , hoarse voice or swollen glands in the neck.
  • Colds are caused by viruses , and antibiotics do not cure viruses. Transmission is by hand-to-hand contact, sneezing, coughing and they can persist on surfaces of objects for many hours. The virus is shed from the nasal discharge. People are contagious a day or two before the onset of symptoms and for an average of 7 to 10 days. As the cold progresses, contagiousness gradually decreases. Shedding of the virus from nasal discharge may last as long as 2 or 3 weeks. The incubation (time from exposure to the virus and the start of symptoms) is less than a week. Colds are not caused by cold air, drafts, or swimming. Some newborns sound stuffy on and off, but there is no nasal discharge. They are having dried mucous developing in the nasal passage which can be cleared with salt water drops and bulb syringing. Infants under about 4 months must breathe through their nose and sucking can become difficult with a cold. They may be at risk of becoming dehydrated if they are not feeding well.

FLU AND COLDS
WHAT IS IT?

There's little escape from the common cold and influenza, better known as the flu. Most adults in the United States get two or three colds a year, and children get six to ten. Flu is less common. In an average year, about 10 to 20 percent of Americans come down with it. Viruses-tiny organisms that attach to your cells and reproduce inside them-cause colds and flu. Both illnesses spread easily. Colds make you sneeze and cough, give you a runny nose and sore throat, and sometimes a headache and low fever. Flu brings many of the same symptoms-only worse-and comes on like a runaway truck. One minute you feel okay; the next you have a high fever, dry cough, and aching muscles. Flu can be serious. In an average year, it kills 20,000 Americans, mostly older adults who often have other health problems, such as heart disease. Flu strains change all the time, and every once in a while a super strain emerges to claim thousands of lives around the world. While you can't always avoid getting a cold or flu, you can cut your risk. A flu shot each year can help. And staying healthy may aid you in getting over a cold or flu faster. back to All Conditions

The 'common cold' is caused by a virus, transmitted by sneezing or coughing between members of families, schools, or people working together. It may be precipitated by breathing in damp and chilly air, though some people - particularly the elderly - are at greater risk. Symptoms Nasal catarrh with a frontal headache is common, while inflammation of the sinuses , sometimes spreading to the middle ear with mild fever, may occur. Rarely lasting more than a few days, it may be followed by tonsillitis or laryngitis , while secondary respiratory infections such as bronchitis , or even pneumonia, may occur in predisposed individuals. Although mild, a cold often causes a short period of immuno-depression, which may lead to more serious diseases such as measles, whooping cough, influenza and tuberculosis.

The following article gives information about cold and flu problems.
It is possible to effectively ease the pain and discomfort of colds and flu, naturally.
As part of our regular newsletter there will be examples of successful alternative treatments.
Cold and Flu Remedies
The time to treat a cold is when you don't have it.! Prevention is always better than cure. However the same herbs that keep colds and flu at bay, will also help you get rid of it faster.
The common cold is caused by any one of 200 different viruses. When infection occurs , the walls of the respiratory tract swell and produce excess mucus, giving rise to the typical cold symptoms. Symptoms range from sore throat, running nose, nasal congestion, watery eyes to hacking cough, headache, and fever. Most colds run their course in 7-10 days. Recurrent colds (almost constantly suffering) may indicate a lowered immune capacity and too much stress and often not enough sleep.
Colds spread from person to person and are highly contagious. Coughing, sneezing or hand to hand contact will easily pass the virus on. The virus can also live for several hours on everyday surfaces.

Tinctures are easily assimilated, convenient and can extract a wider range of medicinal properties than dried herbs and capsules. They have a shelf life of five years or more, and are best stored in a cool, dark place.
Since these remedies are strong-tasting, the best way to take them is in a small amount of water and drink them down. Though not essential, you'll get the most out of the tincture if taken on an empty stomach. For children, you can mix it in a little fruit juice.

Influenza , or flu, is less common, and is more serious. Unlike the cold it is more than just a sum of its symptoms. It can be particularly dangerous to vulnerable groups such as the elderly, or young children. The flu virus Although medical science has made advances against a great number of diseases and conditions, it has yet to offer a cure for the common cold. This is largely due to the viral nature of cold, and of flu. There is no cure for these conditions, although relief is available for symptoms.

Vitamin C:
Do High Doses Prevent Colds?
Charles W. Marshall, Ph.D.
(Edited by Stephen Barrett, M.D)
Few things have stirred the imagination and hopes of the public in matters of nutrition or vexed nutrition scientists as much as Linus Pauling's 1970 book, Vitamin C and the Common Cold. [1] The book's main claim was that taking 1 gram (1,000 mg) of vitamin C daily would reduce the incidence of colds by 45% for most people, but that some persons might need much larger amounts. It recommended that if symptoms of a cold do start, you should take 500 or 1,000 mg every hour for several hours or 4 to 10 grams daily if symptoms don't disappear with smaller amounts. Without question, publication of this book, combined with Pauling's reputation as a Nobel Prize-winning scientist, has made vitamin C a best seller. When his theory was announced, millions of Americans rushed to try it for themselves. The second edition of the book, issued in 1976 as Vitamin C, the Common Cold and the Flu, suggested even higher dosages [2].

Main colds and Influenza. colds and Influenza (flu) are both caused by avirus that is passed from one individual to another through the air.
http://www.pharmweb.net/pwmirror/pwz/conditions/coldflu.html
Colds and Influenza
Colds and Influenza (flu) are both caused by a virus that is passed from one individual to another through the air. These two ailments also have common symptoms, which often leads to confusion of the two conditions. Colds and flu are not the same thing, flu is much more dangerous, and can be fatal. However , due to the similarity of the symptoms the treatments available are similar for both the flu and the common cold.
The flu has additional symptoms which make it identifiable from a cold. The symptoms of a cold, of which some or all may be present, include:
  • Headache
  • Runny/Blocked Nose
  • Sore Throat
  • Runny Eyes
  • Slight Fever
  • Dry Cough
The flu has the following additional symptoms:
  • Fever (High Temperature)
  • Lethargy
  • Sweating
  • Aching of the entire body (particularly) the joints
Another way to differentiate a bad cold from a case of flu is the duration of the infection and subsequent recovery. An individual will take longer to recover fully from the flu than they would from a common cold.
It is possible to vaccinate against flu by monitoring the slight changes in the virus each year. However, when faced with the massive variety of cold viruses it would be impossible to vaccinate against them all. This is why there is, as yet, no cure for the common cold.
