    THE BIG QUESTION:
How can I use the Internet to enhance and extend the range of literacy opportunities for my elementary school students? Enhancing Texts Build background knowledge for learners of all ages with this incredible resource.
  • Enchanted Learning : Zoom Learning Units, Little Explorers Picture Dictionary (with vocabulary in five languages!), hundreds of animals printouts, great graphics, Rebus Nursery Rhymes, Easy Crafts, Geography Units, coloring pages and even activities for preschoolers. Reading level gets harder as you follow more links within their site, and then eventually link to outside resources to extend even further. There's enough to keep your students, Grades K-6, busy and learning all year long!
  • Fill extra learning minutes with an assortment of word games: start one up in a learning center each day, and provide links to two or three others for each day of the week.

How long did it take you to write that novel?" a student of mine recently asked. "My whole life," I replied... getting arrested (mistakenly) as a contraband runner in Nigeria,
teaching hands-on seminars on writing and publishing in new media,
stroking the gold-medal four in the Royal Canadian Henley Regatta,
giving birth naturally at home in a bathtub jacuzzi,
pouring through post/colonial theory and fiction
to help me articulate a bi-lingual French-Canadian heritage,
rollerblading with a stroller in Prospect Park,
programming interactive javascript stories,
sparring Wing Chun with my lover... The research takes many forms, as do the products of that research. What follows are some recent projects.

Celebrate Dr. Seuss' birthday on Monday, March 3rd, by participating in National Education AssociationÕs Read Across America. Literacy Center.net Pre K - 1 The National Research Council's study "Preventing Reading Difficulties in Young Children" states that children who are exposed to reading at an early age make the symbol/language connection and are more likely to be reading at the appropriate age level by the end of third grade. The Literacy Center aims to provide safe learning activities for parents and teachers to share with young children. It follows a modified Montessori approach to teaching reading. As a pre and early reading curriculum, it assumes that each online lesson will be supported by appropriate offline instruction, either at home or in school. ABC's of the Writing Process The purpose of this site is to provide a user-friendly online resource, for students or teachers, no matter what they are being challenged to write. The website, created by A. E. Lipkewich and R. Mazurenko of the Edmonton Public Schools, Alberta Canada, provides a plethora of ideas, tips, and additional links for each of the five steps of the writing process (prewriting, writing, revising, editing, and publishing). The site also offers the Writing Process Club, a chat room and a message board for discussing the writing process.

Language Arts and Literature Author Sites Citing Sources Shakespeare Middle/High School ... Writing Process Resources Citing Sources Just as students need to cite the books and periodicals they use to support their research, they must also cite online sources of information. The following methods have been developed to help students cite Internet resources as accessed through their Internet browsers. This method makes it easy for educators to check the veracity of every online source their students cite. The Citation Machine: This web tool enables teachers (and students) to select a resource type (book, journal article, newspaper or magazine article, website, email message, online forum, interview) and then fill in a form asking for the appropriate attribution information. The tool then produces a standard citation for the resource, which can be highlighted, copied, and then pasted into an information product. A new addition to Citation Machine is the option to generate APA citations as well as MLA. Then just copy and paste your citation into your project. Electronic Reference Formats Recommended by APA: The APA has revised their guidelines for electronic citations. Keep up with the latest information for citing all your electronic sources, including electronic databases.
