What are the benefits of using technology in the classroom? What I see as one of the major benefits of using technology in the classroom is how it allows the student to concentrate on the academics of the subject. For example, it decreases the need to concentrate on how to form letters when trying to write a word, it assists a student to retrieve the correct word when formulating a sentence, it offers the student the ability to have text read to them so they may concentrate on comprehending the material and not on decoding. For all age groups technology increases their self-esteem and allows for greater control and independence in the learning process. Overall, when the student is motivated to use the technology it will ease frustration, foster a sense of peer acceptance, and improve productivity in the classroom and at home. Why is inclusion via technology in the general education classroom important for students with learning disabilities?
Many parents express to LD OnLine that they have asked the student be allowed to use technology in the classroom but are told "no." We often hear that teachers or school policy states that students cannot use a word processor, for example, to complete written assignments. What would you tell these parents.

By dissecting pop culture and advertisements, media literacy education can help students build critical thinking and analytic skills, become more discriminating in the use of mass media, distinguish between reality and fantasy and consider whether media values are their values. Activities are intended for children ages 9-11 and are designed to touch on the six levels of Bloom's Taxonomy: knowledge, comprehension, application, analysis, synthesis and evaluation. In addition, each lesson is aligned with the Mid-Continent Research for Education and Learning (McREL) Standards. Sections for parents and for teachers. (added 4/1/03, reviewed 4/1/03) Ozline.com

TKI Hot Topic for 21 March 2002
ICT for reading and writing
One of the major benefits of integrating ICT into classroom programmes is the interactive nature of the Internet. Interactive technology engages learners, allows classrooms to make connections across geographical and cultural boundaries, and often adds an extra visual or audio stimulus to enhance the learning process. This Hot Topic explores how interactive sites on the Internet can be used to encourage students to engage in reading and writing. We focus on three types of interactive activities: Pick-a-path and continuous stories
Pick-a-path
You are on a newspaper run in a strange neighbourhood when a storm comes from nowhere. Do you take your chances in the rain and try to get home, or do you decide to sit out the storm in the abandoned house you just passed? Pick-a-path stories have long been used as teaching and learning materials to involve students in literature and encourage them to read. When read aloud, not only do pick-a-path stories exercise reasoning, comprehension, and memory, but they also involve the whole class in an enjoyable collaborative activity.

Topics:
Reading Folktales, Writing Folktales, Writing Collaborative Stories
Purpose:
Storytelling is the oldest art form and also the oldest form of teaching. Through the ages, stories have been used to impart human culture. They have been used not only to instruct, but also to entertain and delight. They are used as sugar coatings for hard truths. Stories are a natural way to elicit real speech from students, and also a powerful way for students to transmit their own truths. In this lesson students will read good models of storytelling and learn how to become storytellers by turning narrative accounts into stories. They will then have a chance to share their stories on the Internet, and to write collaborative stories with keypals over the Internet.
Materials:
Internet connection, Student Pages , word processing software ( AppleWorks ClarisWorks Microsoft Word ), publishing software (

The Vasalisa Project Abstract
Design and Storytelling Storytellers and Graphic Designers play similar roles as medial communicators. The Vasalisa Project will investigate the subversive potential of the storyteller/designer by mixing and remixing messages both visually and textually. Through its collaborative process,The Vasalisa Project may even fabricate community. The project will mine the resources of an artistic network, soliciting writing and imagery via the internet. Through its interactive form, the project will offer its audience a sense of agency. The resulting product will provide a messier alternative to the tidy packaging of fairy tales by media corporations. Questions to guide this investigation: How does the graphic designer function as storyteller?
