College Entrance Exams -SAT and ACT The SAT and ACT are entrance exams required by colleges and universities for admission. It is recommended to take the college entrance exams during the spring of your junior year so there is time during the fall of your senior year to retake if necessary. All colleges and universities in Texas accept either exam. The majority of schools require a minimum score on the ACT or SAT to be admitted. To find out the minimum score for the school you are interested in, check with the school' s website, their current catalog, or admissions office. What are the differences between SAT and ACT? SAT attempts to measure your aptitude and ability. It reports a verbal and math score, which are then added together to form a composite score. The SAT verbal and math scores range from to 800, so the composite score ranges from 0-1600. For example, you might have a verbal score of 580 and a math score of 430 for a composite score of 1010. The national average for composite score is approximately 1020. ACT attempts to measure specific knowledge in the four areas of English, math, science, and reading. It reports those four scores and an average score of those scores to form a composite score. Each of the four scores, as well as the composite score, can range from 1 to 36. Currently, the composite score of 21 is the national average.

College Entrance Exams Enter New Era Last Saturday the traffic of the business week faded only to be replaced by a traffic jams of parents in the streets near Beijing No. 8 and No. 35 middle schools and a number of other schools throughout Beijing. The occasion? National college entrance examinations. The exams, which take place July 7-9 every year, are necessary for admission into most of China's top universities and are thus considered by most students and parents as a ticket to good job opportunities in the future. Statistics from the Ministry of Education indicate that more than 4.53 million applicants nationwide are taking part in this year's college entrance examinations. The number is 650,000 more than the 3.88 million who took the test last year. This year's test marks a break from the tradition of the previous two decades. Roughly 16,000 participants over the age of 25 are taking the exams this year, including 10 over 60. The oldest test taker is 73. Previously those above 25 were barred from sitting the national college entrance examinations, but last April the Ministry of Education announced that age and marital status restrictions related to the test would be lifted.

The Importance of College Entrance Exams College entrance exams are still used as a predictor of success in most colleges. Chances are that you’re applying or intending to apply to colleges which require your scores from a standardized college entrance exam such as the ACT or SAT assessment. Be aware that colleges may have a preference of one test over another. Check with your college choice to be sure that your test results will be accepted. These tests are considered important since they measure a student’s strengths and weaknesses in key academic areas. They are generally reviewed along with other criteria in determining a student’s admissibility to a college. Other admission criteria may include the student’s cumulative grade point average, class rank and/or AP courses taken during high school. Test results are important for other purposes as well. In fact, many colleges rely on test scores as a component of academic scholarship eligibility. Contact the colleges of your choice for specific details regarding eligibility criteria and scholarship awards. A growing number of colleges may distribute other institutional scholarships and grants, in part based on test results.

Registration packets for both the Act and SAT are available in die Guidance Office. Students with documented special testing needs or fee waivers should contact their counselors early in the school year for further information. For those special needs students who qualify for extra time, three national test dates are offered through the ACT -October, December and April. See the counselor for the extra forms to be included in the application. Students do not have to take both the ACT and the SAT. Most colleges will accept either. Oklahoma schools prefer the ACT. If attending colleges in the East or West, the SAT is preferred. in the Midwest and South, the ACT is preferred. ACT (American College Testing)
The ACT is a three hour multiple-choice test measuring achievement in four areas: English, math, reading and science reasoning. Each sub-test yields a score of 1-36. A composite score is derived from averaging the four sub-tests and is reported on a scale of 1-36.

Staff Writer Jennifer Meyer strives for perfection. A junior at Lakeville High School, this 16-year-old is maintaining a 4.0 grade-point average and now has another flawless accomplishment to add to her record. Meyer recently received a perfect score not only on the ACT, but also the SAT tests.
“I thought I did pretty well (on the SAT),” said Meyer. “The ACT was a surprise. I was really happy when I found out.”
Meyer took the SAT in late January and the ACT in early February. Other than taking a few practice tests beforehand, Meyer said she did not go out of her way to study for the tests.
“I figured I could take it again if I didn’t do well,” she said.
Meyer has now joined a small handful of past Lakeville High School students who have aced both college entrance tests.
She said school comes fairly easily to her. She is currently taking advanced placement English, chemistry and biology, all of which are senior classes. Meyer is also part of a math program at the University of Minnesota called UMTYMP (University of Minnesota Talented Youth Math Program).
“I basically enjoy school,” said Meyer. But like most teenagers, “I don’t like homework.”

New SAT will resemble other college entrance exams
Education By Kate Carter
kcarter@onlineathens.com Rising Clarke Central High School ninth-grader Erin Hill already talks about the SAT with her friends. She says the standardized test, which has become a rite of passage for college-bound students, is a little ''nerve-wracking,'' and she plans to begin studying SAT preparation books when she starts high school this fall. Hill will likely be in the first group of students to encounter the new SAT format, approved last week by the College Board, a national non-profit association in charge of the development and processing of the SAT. The first new test will be administered in March 2005 and will include a new student-written essay, more critical reading passages that range from science and history to humanities and literature, and a math test expanded to include Algebra II. Quantitative comparisons will be eliminated from the math section and analogies will be eliminated from the verbal section. According to a news release by the College Board, the new SAT test will be equated to the current scoring scale, so that test results will be comparable, and will still be based on a scale of 1600.

This Week's Current
The Classroom Flyer Life Science Biology ... Sports Acing the College Entrance Essay Rule #1: Be Yourself Newspapers report that anxious high school seniors are paying hundreds of dollars for professional help with their college entrance exams. Some students even pull ready-made essays from the Internet. They might be surprised to learn that admissions officials are tired of reading polished essays that all sound vaguely the same. What kind of essay will convince a college official that a student is worthy of admission? The purpose of a college application essay is twofold, says Paul Raccanello, a college admissions officer at Dominican University of California. First, a college wants "to get an idea of who you are as a student, what you're bringing to the college, what qualities you bring to our university. The second part is more for us to see what you can do with your writing. Are you ready for college-level work, can you write a clear, concise, structured essay based on the questions that we ask?" Admissions officers read numerous entrance essays in a short period of time. Time restrictions force them to devote just a few minutes to each essay. The ability to be creative is paramount. While awards and community service stints are valuable experiences, students shouldn't feel restricted to such subjects. What college admission officers really want to see is originality and creativity. They want to know what makes a student tick.
