George - Studied the organ in Amsterdam for his gap year
David - A year in Bordeaux, studying physics in French
Lee - A placement in France - Marketing Aluminium
Jane - Studied Hydrology in France as part of her studies, and began attending the ICS supported chaplaincy of St Marc's, Grenoble Daniel starts with the story of a group of teenagers who knew their God, were sent to a foreign country, and who learned that God was with them even hundreds of miles from home. The God who enabled Daniel and his friends to remain true to their faith is the same God that Christians know today through Jesus Christ. One of the reasons that Daniel survived his exile spiritually was that he teamed up with fellow believers (see Daniel 2:18). You need to find a church whilst you are away from home in order to continue to grow as a Christian and serve God. And you would be wise meet other Christian students in the university or college you are going to.

Have you always dreamed of traveling to cool places, meeting lots of different people, and maybe picking up a language or two? No matter what country you live in, you can fly over the world's highest waterfalls in Venezuela, learn world trade in Japan, study in France, or take dancing lessons in Ghana. How? In a study abroad program , where high school and college students live with a host family in a foreign country. Semester and year-long programs allow you to attend school, join in optional extracurricular activities , take intensive language courses, and perform community service in another country. Imagine earning school credit for projects like protecting Panama's coral reefs or helping with cattle and agricultural projects in the Bolivian Amazon. Read on to learn more about study abroad programs. Why Would You Want to Study Abroad?
Besides the excitement of travel, one reason to study abroad is that you will experience first-hand new customs, holidays, foods, art, music, and politics. "Obviously, I learned the language and am now fluent, but perhaps more importantly was how much I learned about cultures, people, and myself. . . . I learned this from the viewpoint of an active member of the community and my [host] family, not from the tourist's point of view," says Andrew Lefkowits of Denver, Colorado, who studied in Poitiers, France. Studying in a new country can change your perspective much more than a 2-week vacation abroad.

Survey Finds Increase of U.S. College Students Studying Abroad
The National Registration Center for Study Abroad - WORLDWIDE
The Institute of International Education (IIE) conducted an online survey between October 15 and November 1, 2002 regarding U.S. university and college student enrollments and interest in studying abroad, and now the results are in: "Study abroad is more popular than ever."
According to IIE, 45% of the total 324 participants identifying themselves as campus professionals reported "increases in the number of their students studying abroad in fall 2002." These results suggest a continuing and steady increase in the number of U.S. students studying abroad.
Interestingly, the survey also found that the duration of study abroad programs taken by U.S. students has shortened. "(The survey) indicates that students are continuing to study abroad for shorter sojourns (many for less than eight weeks), with nearly 50% of undergraduate and masters degree students electing summer, January term, internships, and other short-term programs instead of academic year or semester programs."
The bottom line here is, if you've been thinking about studying abroad, now's the time to do it! And NRCSA has some great short and long term programs to help you make it a reality.

    Study Abroad or Party Abroad?
Students Cite "full cultural experience" as a main goal Chester, PA January 6, 2002 The image of college students frolicking in European discotheques and sunbathing on the Riviera while ostensibly "studying abroad" is an inaccurate one, according to a December 2002 survey by StudyAbroad.com ( www.StudyAbroad.com ). The survey asked a series of questions to StudyAbroad.com visitors in regards to their motivations for studying abroad. Most college students today don't go abroad just so they can "party" and take a fun break from regular college courses. Indeed, only four percent of those surveyed cited "the legal drinking age" as criteria for choosing a destination, while just two percent mentioned "an enjoyable trip-from water skiing to rock climbing" as a goal. Further, only one percent cited the opportunity to be away from their college campuses as a reason for wanting to study abroad. While undergrads aren't viewing studying abroad as a vacation from their regular schoolwork, today's college students are also not viewing it merely as a way to improve their GPAs. Few decide to spend a summer or semester abroad simply to earn better grades or to live what they've learned in college textbooks. Rather, the opportunity to become immersed in a new culture is the number one reason college students today seek out a study abroad experience.

Facts In Brief: More American College Students Are Studying Abroad, Report Shows
Vol. 49, No. 22 Over the past four years, the number of U.S. students studying abroad has increased by more than 45 percent and reached a record high of 129,770 in the 1998-99 academic year, according to a recent report from the Institute of International Education.
Data show that most U.S. students who studied abroad were involved in short-term programs (less than eight weeks long). For college students from all types of institutions, the proportion of students in short-term programs has increased from 28 percent to 46 percent over the past 13 years. Ninety percent of American students who studied abroad in 1998-99 did so for one semester or less.
Many countries that hosted only a few American students five years ago experienced an increase in students in 1998-99, including Brazil (594 students, a 7 percent increase from the previous year), Cuba (498, up 172 percent), Egypt (267, up 38 percent), Hungary (448, up 13 percent), the Czech Republic (999, up 19 percent), Nepal (296, up 25 percent), and South Africa (891, up 44 percent).
Countries that hosted the most American students included United Kingdom (27,720 in 1998-99, up 7 percent from the previous year), Spain (12,292, up 18 percent), Italy (11,281, up 11 percent), France (10,479, up 7 percent), and Mexico (7,363, down 3 percent).

About MIUSA/NCDE MIUSA Exchanges Back to Your Menu ... Publications Site Map Studying Abroad in China with Diabetes By Elise Read With a deep-fried scorpion staring at me from the end of my chopsticks, I couldn’t help but think how this delicacy in China would stump even my best diabetes doctors in the United States. How much insulin does my body require for a scorpion?! But without further hesitation, I decided to go for it and try to eat this creature whose biological design seemed to be speaking volumes to me: BEWARE! Insects with pinchers are not designed to be consumed. Fortunately, it didn’t bite or pinch my tongue, and whatever dosage of insulin I’d guessed upon seemed to be correct, as I’m still here to tell the tale. It’s experiences such as these that forever changed my life back in the spring of 1995, when I spent a semester studying Chinese at the Beijing Normal University’s College of Foreign Languages through CET Academic Programs. And it’s experiences such as these that I hope all college students can have at least once during their careers. In March of 1994, I was elated to receive a letter from the National Security Education Program (NSEP) Scholarship organization, notifying me that I had been granted funding for a full year of study in China. My elation was short-lived, however, as just one week later I was diagnosed with type I, insulin-dependent diabetes and was suddenly forced to contend with all of the physical and emotional changes such a diagnosis would mean.

S TUDYING A BROAD Guidelines on Major Requirements, Colloquia, and the Senior Seminar for Political Science Majors Studying Abroad You can receive departmental credit for a maximum of two courses taken abroad, out of the total of nine courses required for the major, or one course taken abroad out of five courses required for the minor.
Only one course taken abroad may be used for the colloquium requirement, and only if it is a small course (fewer than twenty students) and if a research paper is the major part of the grade. This requires the approval in writing of the chair of department, and is granted when you return from study abroad and provide a copy of the paper and the course syllabus for departmental review.
Before going abroad you must fill out the Dean of Studies' Study Leave Course Approval Form (online, in PDF), listing the courses you plan to take. Please see the chair of department and provide course descriptions from the program or college catalog. This pre-approval does not guarantee you course credit from the department toward the major or minor. You get departmental credit when you return and fill out our course approval request , and provide a copy of the reading list or other course requirements. At the discretion of the department, courses that do not meet Barnard standards for workload or intellectual rigor will not be granted major or minor credit. (If in doubt, while you are abroad, you can fax or e-mail reading lists at the beginning of the term to the chair of the department.)
