Death Threats Force Colombian Pastor, Family to Flee Torres (not his real name) had never agreed to participate, or choose sides, in the conflict that has roiled Colombian for decades. In the end, it was his choice to work as a pastor and community leader that made him a threat. Torres spent most of his time working in areas patrolled by FARC guerillas. He first began working on social issues in the early 1990s, serving as a pastor in the small agricultural community of Santana Ramos. "At first, the FARC left the church alone," he says. "But with a change in their leadership came a change in attitude and when we refused to bow to extortion pressure, those of us working in community leadership were forced to leave."
Torres moved to San Vincente, a city of approximately 25,000 people, located 250 kms/150 miles southeast of the Colombian capital, Bogota. There, he spent the next several years studying business administration and working as a pastor. It is also the place he met his wife Miriam and where she gave birth to their daughter. San Vincente was initially controlled by the Colombian government but in February, 1999, the government agreed to forfeit the city and five municipalities to the FARC in order to encourage peace talks. When those talks collapsed in February of 2002, the region was again, plunged into civil unrest.

Web site and ideas are great! I can't wait to use the plans this fall. Just wondering if you have any suggestions for a good place to find resources for the mapping exercises...I was under the impression you had the students physically identify and label each location. I have had a difficult time finding good blank maps for the students to do their work on. Also the mapping exercise of Rome. Any ideas would be helpful. The Andean Mountains
    A Geography Lesson
The Andes are the dominating feature of Peru. There are few places like it in the world: the Himilayas, the Alps and the Caucasus. This land mass shapes history and the future. Man is challenged to survive in this environment. The Andes rise 6,000 meter or 19,700 feet above sea level, separating the Pacific Ocean and the Amazon jungle basin. From the depths of the Peru-Chile trench just off the Peruvian coast to the Andean peaks is a difference in altitude of more than 40,000 feet within a distance of 50 miles. The chilly currents of the Pacific Ocean that flow out of the Peru-Chile Trench supercharges the coastal air with humidity, inhibiting rainfall. At most, a low, soupy overcasting covers the coast for six months a year. It makes Lima a depressing place. altiplano economy. The Andes comprise about a third of Peru's territory. The extreme variables of altitude, temperature, moisture, sun light and other factors make the Andes a highly risky environment. Flooding in Puno

Welcome to the OTHER LOOK OF COLOMBIA: Colombian Coffee
The best mild coffee in the world
Welcome to our site. We hope you enjoy the mildest coffee in the world !!! In the opinion of a great number of people throughout the world, Colombian coffee is the richest, smoothest of all coffees. It's an opinion, of course, but Colombia's geography and climate help to produce perfect coffee beans.
Meet the distinctive "Juan Valdez" trademark of the National Federation of Coffee Growers of Colombia.
Unlike beans from other origins, all Colombian coffee is "washed" coffee, which gives Colombian coffee its rich taste and aroma. The basic rule for making a perfect cup of coffee is to start with fresh cold water and "the richest coffee in the world" - 100% Colombian coffee.
The consensus of brewing experts is that six ounces of boiling water mixed with two level tablespoons of 100% Colombian Coffee will produce a splendid cup.
You are cordially invited to enter these sites and get to know more about the best coffee of the world.

A 40-year insurgent campaign to overthrow the Colombian Government escalated during the 1990s, undergirded in part by funds from the drug trade.
