  • Encounter By Jane Yolen, Illustrated by David Shannon (ISBN 0-15-201389-X, Scholastic)
It is said that in 1492 Christopher Columbus discovered a new world, yet what he really found was a people with an established culture and civilization of their own. This story is of that first meeting through the eyes of a young Taino boy. This powerful description of an encounter that changed the world forever challenges students to question the traditional image of Columbus as hero by viewing his arrival from the perspective of the people he conquered.
Vasco da Gama By David Knight (ISBN 0-89375-167-7, Troll)
This small reader is about the life and times of Vasco da Gama, an adventure in discovery. The pictures are not that inviting but the text is historically accurate. It is written in a time line style, more textbook than narrative.
Captain James Cook By Ruth Harley (ISBN 0-89375-169-3 , Troll) A bibliography about the great explorer James Cook. The history is accurate and easy to read, however the pictures are of dull color and not very inviting. It is written in textbook style.

Varina District Kindergarten Grade 1 First Graders have been reading and taking AR tests. We have a total of 138.6 AR points! We learned to count sets of coins and to tell time to the half-hour. We studied weather and seasons and force and motion in science. We studied Abraham Lincoln, George Washington, and President’s Day in social studies. We were very excited to celebrate 100 days of school! Grade 2 Second graders have completed their journey through China and are now working their way through Egypt. The children enjoy learning about pyramids, mummies, pharaohs, and each has seen his/her name written in hieroglyphics. Two-digit addition proves to be a challenge for some, but with continued practice, this second grade skill will be mastered. Second graders have also enjoyed "Beatrix Potter" provided by Theatre IV.
As always, reading for AR is fun and rewarding. We are earning those points to spend at the Penguin Market on March 31st. Grade 3 In March, third graders studied probability, decimals and division in math and soil/ energy and Greece/Rome in science and social studies. We learned from and enjoyed a field trip to the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts. In language arts, we continued our studies of biographies and autobiographies and explored poetry and as always, our focus is on reading comprehension and improved writing skills.

http://state-of-coast.noaa.gov/bulletins/html/crf_08/case.html
Photo 19. Florida's reefs are overfished, with populations of most species of snappers and groupers below critical levels. Photo 20. Nutrient pollution from a sewage outfall caused algae to overgrow this coral in Kaneohe Bay, Hawaii. Photo 21. Marine debris is a type of pollution that damages coral reefs. The following two case studies are among the best known examples of coral reef ecosystems changing through a combination of natural and human-caused disturbances. In Florida, the relative importance of natural and human stresses is still under debate. In Hawaii, the effects of coastal development and sewage disposal practices seem clear, but scientists still have difficulty predicting what will happen on the reefs.
Florida Keys: Why Coral Reefs Look the Way They Do in Florida Coral reefs in the Florida Keys are generally not in good condition, though some areas remain quite spectacular. This can be attributed to both human and natural factors. The human assault includes thousands of ship groundings since colonial times, over-harvesting of fish, collecting of coral and sponges, and sewage-polluted nearshore waters. Natural factors are also implicated in the decline. In the early 1980s, an epidemic killed almost all the long-spined black sea urchins in the Caribbean and south Atlantic; the urchins were the "sheep" of the reef, grazing on algae that competes with corals for space. Now that the urchins are few in number, it is difficult to determine whether or not the sewage pollution that is a problem near shore, or the absence of urchins, is responsible for the increased seaweed on the reefs. Causing further problems is a second disease epidemic that killed a significant amount of branching coral throughout the Caribbean and is still present in the Keys. Unusually cold weather has killed corals on several occasions as well.

A large number of paper presenters however opted for a safer middle course in their analyses of the works of Shashi Tharoor, Amitav Ghosh, Rama Mehta, Kiran Desai, etc. If one had looked forward to fiery and passionate debates on the topology of "inside, us: outside, them", and the indigene vs alien dichotomy, the post-paper discussions were a disappointment. The Mumbai audience of college teachers remained passive and mute leaving participants to debate moot points among themselves. Mala Pandurang
