Resources for the Implementation of Standards for Japanese Language Learning
Pre-School to College Introduction Recommendations Progress Table of Contents Compiled by the National Working Group on Japanese Language Competency Goals, convened by the Association of Teachers of Japanese and the National Council of Japanese Language Teachers, January, 2000, with the generous support of the United States-Japan Foundation Introduction Content standards, upon which performance standards are based, lie at the heart of education reforms undertaken in the United States during the past decade. The movement to develop national standards in world languages was inspired by the Goals 2000: Educate America Act . Standards for Japanese education were developed by a committee of Japanese teaching professionals representing educators from kindergarten through graduate education, working as part of the National Standards in Foreign Language Education Collaborative Project. The Japanese standards have been published as part of the Standards for Foreign Language Learning in the 21st Century The foreign language teaching profession believes that content standards can guide:
  • development of logically ordered sequences of language study

Legislation Write a letter to your Elected Officials July 1, 2002 Congressional Field Hearing Attended by Colorado Society of School Psychologists Members
by Jack Lindsey (CSSP President), Michelle Malvey (CSSP Legislative Chair), and Melissa Reeves (Colorado NASP Delegate) On July 1 several CSSP officers and members attended a hearing on the reauthorization of IDEA in Littleton, Colorado. The field hearing, hosted by Representative Tom Tancredo, was conducted for the U.S. House of Representatives Committee on Education and the Workforce, Subcommittee on Education Reform, and was titled, "Reform of the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) is Necessary and Possible." Formal presentations were given by Randy DeHoff, Chairman of the Colorado State Board of Education, Patti Johnson, former State Board member, and by Dr. Bill Moloney, Commissioner of Education for the Colorado State Department of Education. Several parents, district administrators and school psychologists, as well as one Colorado State Representative (Keith King) also spoke at the invitation of Representative Tancredo.
Mr. DeHoff spoke of the conflicts inherent in the current special education system: overidentification, too much focus on compliance and rules, and a lack of flexibility in applying interventions. He called for: an increased emphasis on how children are educated rather than how they are identified; the elimination of the LD classification or an increased emphasis on how a lack of instruction contributes to learning problems; local control; and serving children rather than bureaucracy.
