At the end of each excerpt, you have the opportunity to visit the abstract of the original paper or article excerpted. No. 1 For a river bigger than life such a condition seems unthinkable. Plunging from frozen heights of 14,000 feet on the continental spine , the Colorado writhes for 1,450 miles. It etches the Rocky Mountains, it carves the mile-deep Grand Canyon. For only 56 years have its red-mud floods been under control. European explorers thought the land it flowed through was useless. "Ours has been the first and will doubtless be the last party of whites to visit this profitless locality," wrote Lt. Joseph C. Ives of the Army Engineers in 1858, after steaming upriver to the present site of Hoover Dam in search of a navigable route between the Rockies and the Pacific. "The Colorado River, along the greater portion of its lonely and majestic way, shall be forever unvisited and undisturbed." As rivers are measured, the Colorado has only a few superlatives: Its elevational drop is the greatest in North America; it is one of the siltiest (before the dams, it carried an average load of 380,000 tons a day); and it is one of the saltiest, carrying nine million tons a year. Although it ranks seventh in length in the U.S., its water volume has averaged only 15 million acre-feet of water yearly since 1905. (The Columbia empties 192 million and the Mississippi more then 400 million).

Location and Climate
Westminster, Colorado is a community apart from Denver, with lots to offer business and residents. Still, the City is conveniently close to Denver and Boulder and within easy reach of major business centers, educational facilities and all a major metropolitan area has to offer. Westminster's parks, quality residential areas, trails and open space, along with its corporate parks, reflect the progressive thinking and commitment to quality for which Westminster is known. Westminster lies in the northwest quadrant of the Denver metropolitan area, between Boulder and Denver. It is bisected by the Denver/Boulder Turnpike (U.S. 36) and it is adjacent to I-25. West 104th Avenue crosses the city and provides direct access to Denver International Airport.
Colorado is a diverse region of mountains, plateaus, canyons, and plains. Generally, the eastern half of the state has flat, high plains and rolling prairies. The continental Divide runs from north to south through west central Colorado and bisects the state into the eastern and western slopes. The western half of the state consists of alpine terrain interspersed with wide valleys, rugged canyons, high plateaus and deep basins. Colorado's altitude is one of its distinctive geographical features. With an average elevation of 6,800 feet, Colorado is the nation's highest state. The climate is dry with low humidity levels resulting in relatively mild temperatures throughout the year with plenty of sunshine.

"Gateway to the Rocky Mountains" . . . Colorado Physiographics Regions Climate ... Depression/Recovery COLORADO return
Colorado, one of the Mountain states of the United States, is a landlocked, rectangular territory. It is bordered by six states: Wyoming and Nebraska on the north, Utah on the west, New Mexico and Oklahoma on the south, and Kansas on the east. Permanent human occupation of the area dates back at least 10,000 years. Spanish exploratory expeditions beginning in the early 16th century left no settlements, and it was not until the discovery of gold in 1858 that Colorado received its first modern permanent settlement. The name Colorado was chosen in 1861 by the first territorial governor, William Gilpin, because the region contains the source of the Colorado River; the word is Spanish for "colored" or "reddish."
Since World War II, Colorado has been among the faster-growing states. Manufacturing and services have replaced agriculture as the primary economic sectors. Colorado today faces such challenges as cultural pluralism, land- and water-use conflicts, imbalance in population distribution, and the adverse environmental impact of resource conversion.

Geography
Colorado's eastern expanses are part of the High Plains section of the Great Plains . On their western edge the plains give way to the Rocky Mountains , which run north-south through central Colorado. The mountains are divided into several ranges that make up two generally parallel belts, with the Front Range and a portion of the Sangre de Cristo Mts. on the east and the Park Range, Sawatch Mts., and San Juan Mts. on the west. Mt. Elbert (14,433 ft/4,399 m) is the highest peak in the U.S. Rocky Mts. The mountain ranges are separated by high valleys and basins called parks. These include North Park, Middle Park, South Park, Estes Park, and San Luis Park. The Continental Divide runs north-south along the Rocky Mts. in Colorado. One of the most scenic states in the country, Colorado has recreational parks including Rocky Mountain National Park, Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park with its narrow gorge cut by the Gunnison River, Dinosaur National Monument in NW Colorado, and Great Sand Dunes National Monument in S central Colorado. Mesa Verde National Park, once the home of Anasazi cliff dwellers , is in the southwestern corner of the state, a beautiful but formidable area of mesas and canyons.

Cloth ISBN 0-300-07118-3
Sprawling Piedmont cities, ghost towns on the plains, earth-toned placitas set against the Sangre de Cristo Mountains, mining camps transformed into ski resortsthese are some of the diverse regions in Colorado explored in this fascinating book. Historical geographer William Wyckoff traces the evolution of the state during its formative years from 1860 to 1940, chronicling its changing cultural landscapes, social communities, and connections to a larger America and showing that Colorado has exemplified the unfolding of a complex western environment. Wyckoff discusses how nature, capitalism, a growing federal political presence, and national cultural influences came together to produce a new human geography in Colorado. He explains the ways in which the state’s distinctive settlement geographies each took on a special character that persists to the present. He leads the reader through the transformation of the state from wilderness to a distinct region capable of accommodating the diverse needs of ranchers, miners, merchants, farmers, and city dwellers. And he describes how a state created out of cartographic necessity has been given uniqueness and meaning by the people who live there. “A complex, richly rewarding original study that informs us about the entire West as well as about Colorado.”Howard R. Lamar, editor of
