DENVER (Friday, October 19, 2001) - Beginning on Monday, October 22, the Colorado Rapids and the Colorado Army National Guard will commence a series of visits to area elementary, middle and high schools via helicopter - landing in school yards across the Front Range to promote the Red Ribbon anti-drug program among students. The Red Ribbon campaign, a part of the Colorado National Guard Drug Demand Reduction Office, is designed not only to raise awareness about drugs and alcohol, but to educate the public on the dangers of substance abuse as well. Over the past several years, the Colorado Rapids have forged a strong partnership with the men and women of the Colorado Army National Guard. Given the National Guard's role in serving and protecting our American communities, the Rapids are proud to do their part by supporting the Colorado military in helping to endorse its Red Ribbon program across the state. The helicopter visits will begin on October 22 and run through November 2. Approximately 3-6 schools will be visited each day by Rapids players who will present an autographed ball to each school as well as sign autographs and pass out American flag bumper stickers to students. A total of 23 schools will be visited during the 10-day program. The player schedule is as follows:

Preschool fees rile parents in Denver

This year, Microsoft founder and billionaire Bill Gates could have walked into a Denver Public Schools preschool and enrolled a child for free. Next year, Lorinda Rodriguez would be charged $185 a month for preschool, even though she is a mother of three and her husband works two jobs so she can stay at home with the kids.

When parents go to war Students on military bases learn about uncertainty up close By Nancy Mitchell, Rocky Mountain News
March 17, 2003
COLORADO SPRINGS - In the shadow of the Air Force Academy, beyond gates secured by soldiers, a class of high school students is debating - more or less - the merits of war with Iraq. "No matter what we decide to do, they need our support," junior Vaughn Helm, 17, says of U.S. troops. "If we protest this, it's going to fail." Senior Rachel Potter shakes her head. "Why should we support a war just because Bush wants us to?" she asks. "I have more respect for human life than he does." Potter, also 17, is clearly in the minority in this international relations class at Air Academy High School, a public school located on the Air Force base in northern El Paso County.

Camp (later Fort) Collins was established in 1862 near LaPorte and named for COL William I. Collins, Commander of Camp Laramie in Wyoming. The same year, the Morrill Act established land grant colleges composed of 30,000 acres of Federal land per state for each congressman. With this land as a basis, the bill establishing the Agricultural College of Colorado was signed by the Governor of the Territory of Colorado in March 1870. The college began on twenty acres in 1874 with five students. It became a state institution on March 9th, 1877, the year after Colorado was admitted to the Union. Charles L. Ingersoll, the first president of the college and a Civil War veteran, organized a group of students into the first drill team. Actual military instruction didn't begin until 1884, when Lt. Vasa E. Stolbrand was placed in charge. The few men who signed up for the course were taught basic infantry tactics and maneuvers. The cadet battalion acted as a fire-fighting team and also fired salutes and appeared in ceremonies and parades. During these early years the single "Thursday Drill", as it is known today, was conducted each day. With the advent of WWI, more theoretical instruction was added to the cadet training. In 1916 Congress passed the National Defense Act, which created the Reserve Officers' Training Corps (ROTC). This provided the first coherent scheme for the military training at civilian schools. With war declared on Germany in 1917, the government allowed students enrolled in college cadet corps to qualify for commissions by taking special examinations. The longer a student's association with a military training program, the better his chances for securing a higher rank. During the 1920's, enrollment in ROTC was very high. The year 1927 was an important one for the ROTC program, because it was the year the "Cadettes" were first introduced. This group was composed of college coeds who were picked by the cadets to represent their companies and battalions.

Alliance tries to ease transition for military kids
By KIMBERLY LAMKE THE GAZETTE Children whose parents are in the military change schools as many as nine times before they graduate from high school, so local military and school officials are looking for ways to make the transitions easier. “It’s hard for any child to move schools, but for a military child who may attend many more schools in their lives, making the transition easy is especially important,” said Shari Reese, the wife of Fort Carson’s 7th Infantry Division Brig. Gen. Robert Reese. Shari Reese is a member of the Pikes Peak School and Military Parent Alliance Committee. The group was formed to build cooperation between local school districts and military installations in large part to reduce the stress on children when their families move. One of the things this group hopes to accomplish is to buy and install video conferencing units, called Interactive Counseling Centers, in every high school in El Paso County before the end of May. One exists at Fountain-Fort Carson High School. The centers allow students and their counselors to work with officials at other schools to ensure a smooth move. Students can meet teachers and counselors at their new school, as well as take placement tests.
