text version services council city code ... recycling search Setting Up A School Recycling Program The key to a school recycling program is to get everyone involved. Recycling programs should be kept simple at the start. Any implementation should be fairly easy to handle or there will be a rapid die-off in enthusiasm and results. The messages that students get about recycling should be clear and positive. Step One First, students, faculty and administration need to decide how to proceed with a sound recycling program. Questions like, "what kinds of recyclable waste does the school produce?" (mainly paper and aluminum cans) and "how will the recyclables get to recycling centers" needs to be asked. A recycling program may start as a "recycling club" activity, with the leadership changing to administrative staff as the program grows into a permanent school function. Eventually, it is probably desirable that the recycling coordinator be housed with a complementary function like custodial services, maintenance and operations. The recycling coordinator or recycling contact person will want to keep students motivated and the program running smoothly. Step Two The next step in your "learn-by-doing recycling program" is to find out who will take the collected recyclables. To help you, the City of Fort Collins Natural Resources Division produces a

Meet the staff
The Liverpool High School Library Media Center is fortunate to provide a program staffed by library and information professionals. Studies have shown that students who attend a school with full-time library media specialists and support staff actually have higher academic achievement.
Research on Academic Achievement and Library Media Centers
The most commonly cited study about the correlation between library media programs and student achievement is the "Colorado Study" conducted by Keith Curry Lance in 1993. The results: where library media centers are better funded, academic achievement is higher, whether their schools and communities are rich or poor and whether adults in the community are well or poorly educated. Lance also found that among predictors of academic achievement, the size of the school library staff and collection is second in significance only to the absence of risk conditions (such as poverty). Power to the Librarian By Betty Bankhead 12/1/2002
Features > Colorado's grassroots program pairs high-performing school librarians with their promising peers Comment on this article Barnett and Langeberg are among 133 media specialists across Colorado who have been transformed by the Power Libraries project, the only statewide program in the nation that pairs promising school librarians with scant resources with those that have successfully integrated information literacy skills into the classroom. Call it the Big Sister mentoring program for school librarians. Power Libraries teaches media specialists how to turn their school libraries into vital learning centers that seamlessly weave resources into classroom lessons. And it teaches them how to collaborate with teachers to ensure kids learn the right research skills. With these accomplishments, the project's creators say, librarians will eventually gain the trust and support of their principals, and soon enough, the badly needed funds will start flowing their way.

CORE: California Opportunities for Reference Excellence
is a statewide correspondence training program developed for the public libraries in California. The San Joaquin Valley Library System headquartered in Fresno, California manages the project on behalf of the California State Library. They will, upon receipt of a supervisor's request on library letterhead, issue a password that permitts access to the answer key. Even if the correspondence aspect of this program is not used, the written materials are very beneficial. The San Joaquin Valley Library System has had a Reference Correspondence Course since its beginning in 1960. The CORE course is based on that work. In 1990, the state of Minnesota adapted the CORE materials for use in Minnesota, as the MORE project. As part of that effort, a committee revised and updated the CORE materials. This current edition of the CORE REFERENCE CORRESPONDENCE COURSE incorporates many of those changes and updates.
