School Libraries The Benefit of The School Library: An Essential Learning Tool Well-equipped school libraries are one of the best ways of promoting learning and achievement:
  • Free voluntary reading is the foundation for good grammar, writing, and reading comprehension abilities. The school library is the single most available source of reading material for the average American student. (Source: Stephen Krashen, The Power of Reading
Research indicates that the highest achieving students tend to come from schools with strong libraries and library programs. (Source: Keith Curry Lance, The Impact of School Library Media Centers on Academic Achievement, OERI, U.S. Dept. Of Education, 1994
Three statewide studies released this Spring by the Colorado State Library's Library Research Service and the University of Denver's Library and Information Services Department found that a strong library media program consisting of a well-stocked school library staffed by a trained school library media specialist helps students learn more and score higher on standardized achievement tests than their peers in library-impoverished schools. These findings hold true for every school and in every grade level tested (regardless of social and economic factors in the community), in the very dissimilar states of Colorado, Pennsylvania, and Alaska.

Current Services:
Internet access : Salida School District's Internet access is via 1mb wireless service provided by Colorado Spring's based Apollo Communications (formerly Vanion, Inc.).
For the long term, Salida School District plans to support and join the Statewide Multiuse Network. For the 2003-2004 school year we will remain with Apollo Communications. Pricing for the MNT is several hundred dollars a month more than our current services from Apollo. An additional expense that hinders our joining the MNT Salida Schools is the purchase (or lease ad infinitum) an ATM (asynchronous transfer mode)-capable router. Internet access is available throughout the district in every school building on the Wide Area Network.
Longfellow Elementary School Internet access is available in every classroom, in the computer lab which has 36 PIII 733 Windows 2000 workstations, and in the library at the client access stations.
Internet access is available school-wide at Salida Middle School. In the Media Center there are 6 student access computers. All classroom are wired for access. There are 33 Windows 2000 Professional workstations in the library lab, as well as a keyboarding training classroom with 39 Windows 2000 Professional workstations. The K-12 tech dept staff, both of them, are refurbishing donated computers as fast as possible and placing them on line in classrooms. Students use Scholastic Reading Counts on line from all classrooms.

School library media centers are being looked at in a different light given the drive for increased student achievement, with under-staffing being the top issue, coupled with equity of accwss to library resources.

INTRODUCTION
Advocates of school library media programs have long been convinced of
the relationship between quality library media programs and academic
achievement. Most studies of this relationship were conducted between
1959 and 1979, were limited in scope, and usually used a small number
of subjects in a limited geographical area. This study was designed both to update the existing research and to examine the relationship between library media programs and student achievement. METHODOLOGY Ideally, schools included in the sample for a study such as this would be selected on a random, stratified, or quota basis. None of these sampling designs was possible, because schools included in the sample had to have library media centers that responded to the 1989 survey of school library media centers in Colorado and had to use the Iowa Tests of Basic Skills (ITBS) or Tests of Achievement and Proficiency (TAP).

CDC awards funds to universities for research on how to prevent disease and injuries
As part of its new strategy to strengthen and expand the nation's public health research programs at universities, CDC announced today grants of $12.5 million to fund 50 research projects at academic health centers, research centers and university-affiliated programs across the country. The funding is part of CDC's Prevention Research Initiative, an effort to link the talents and skills of university-based scientists with the resources of health departments, community-based programs, and national organizations. "The awards ensure that public health research activities address problems affecting the nation's communities," says Dr. Jeffrey P. Koplan, director of the CDC. "The grants will help CDC and its partners conduct research that can directly improve community health and reduce the need for medical care." The grants cover a range of subjects, including prevention of sexually transmitted diseases, asthma, genetics and home, workplace and recreational injuries. (See complete list attached.) Activities include centers of excellence in prevention research, research projects to inform public policy, and research investigator training and development. The average grant is approximately $250,000. Most projects are funded for three years.

Departments > Editorial A potential source of school library statistics has dried up The Impact of School Library Media Centers on Academic Achievement (Hi-Willow), aka the Colorado study. I had expected Stoll to pin the lack of statistics on the fact that comparing reading ability across states is nearly impossible, since there is no one test that all American children must take. For a multi-state study, Library Power would have had to install itself in schools whose students are tested by the National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP). This test, which involves some 100,000 students from 2,000 schools, provides the only national sample we have of reading ability.

Specialists Impact Student Achievement
  • "What a school thinks about its library is a measure of what it thinks about education." ~ Harold Howe, former U.S. Commissioner of Education
Students who score higher on "tests tend to come from schools which have more library resource staff and more books, periodicals and videos, and where the instructional role of the teacher-librarian and involvement in cooperative program planning and teaching is more prominent." ~ Keith Curry Lance, et. al. The Impact of School Library Media Centers on Academic Achievement
"School library media specialists play an important role in improving student achievement through the teaching of information literacy, the promotion of reading literacy and the continued integration of technology. No where else in a school system does one see these three important factors come together. In order to be successful in these three areas, a student needs adequate resources, something school libraries have not had through national, state or local funds recently." ~ Gayle Geitgey, OELMA President, March 2001 .
