Power Libraries Project
The Power Libraries Project is a statewide project designed to bring recognition to the role that school library media programs and staff play in promoting student achievement. The focus is on developing and promoting quality school library media programs and practices that help students meet standards. The project is a cooperative project of the Central Colorado Library System and the Colorado State Library, funded in part by the Library Services and Technology Act.   Research shows that well-staffed, well-stocked media centers can contribute to CSAP scores that are as much as 18% higher than in those schools without such programs.  2002-2003 Power Libraries Project Developing and High Performance School Libraries have been announced: High Performance School Libraries (PDF)

Though Florida has invested millions of dollars teaching children to read, the state's school libraries have languished.

NEW STUDY SHOWS IMPACT OF SCHOOL LIBRARIES, LIBRARIANS, ON STUDENTS
Educators and parents agree children need good skills to succeed in school. But how do they gain these skills? A new study shows that strong library media programs are an important component. "How School Librarians Help Kids Achieve Standards-the Second Colorado Study," just released by the Library Research Service of the Colorado State Library, Colorado Department of Education, demonstrates that student scores on standardized tests are ten to eighteen percent higher at schools with outstanding library media programs and staff. Deputy Commission of Education Dick Elmer said, "We are beginning to isolate data which enables us to determine the factors that contribute to higher student achievement on the CSAP (Colorado Student Assessment Program) test. I've always believed school libraries play a critical role in successful teaching. I'm not surprised they contribute to higher CSAP scores." The study found that CSAP reading scores are higher in schools whose library media programs are better staffed, stocked, and funded, and where library media specialists play a leadership role in their schools, collaborate with classroom teachers in the design and delivery of instruction, and utilize computer networks to extend the reach of the library media center throughout the school. * School library media specialists who are leaders meet regularly with their principals, serve with teachers on standards and curriculum committees, and meet regularly with their own staff.

The study was a follow-up to a 1993 study. In 1993, the Colorado State Library published 'The Impact of School Library Media Centers on Academic Achievement." This first study demonstrated that quality library media programs led to higher student test scores. The replication and expansion of the study in 1999 corroborates the original findings as well as evaluating the role of the school librarian media specialist and the relationship between better school library services and better student performance. Similar recent studies for Alaska and Pennsylvania also support these findings.

For your information , students come to the library each week for l ibrary research skills or a story time . They have the opportunity to check out books during the class time and they may also come during free time. Students in grades 1-6 may have two books checked out at a time and kindergartners may have one book. Books are due two weeks from the date of checkout unless there is a holiday. We pass out overdue notices every two weeks. If a book is lost or damaged, it is the District policy that the book is replaced or a fine is paid. Please help your child remember to bring back the library books on time and keep them in safe place at home. Birthday Club Please consider participating in the Birthday Club as it greatly increases the number of new books in our collection and includes our library in your child's birthday celebration. If you'd like to participate you can send a newly published, hardback book from your favorite bookstore. Your child may also choose from our pre-selected Birthday Club books which we have in the library. The average price of the books is $15.00. We take a photograph of your child holding the book for our bulletin board, put a book plate in the book and ask the classroom teacher to share the book with the class. The Birthday Club books are on display and truly become a special part of our collection. Please contact me if you have any questions.

"If you have built castles in the air, your work need not be lost; that is where they should be. Now put the foundation under them." Henry David Thoreau The "foundation under them" is education. Education can come in many formsbooks, films, music. Information also comes from living every day. We all have dreams and goals. Education, knowledge and hard work help us to achieve them. The Information Media Centers are only one tool in helping students achieve their goals. The librarians are merely facilitators helping students find the most relevant information that they need. We would like to welcome all of you to the Information Media Centers if Brush Public Schools.
