HIS VOYAGES AND DISCOVERY OF THE NEW WORLD
THE FIRST VOYAGE

Columbus sailed from Palos de la Frontera on 3 August, 1492. His flagship, the Santa Maria had 52 men aboard while his other two ships, the Nina and Pinta each held 18 men. The expedition made a stop at the Canary Islands and on 6 September 1492 sailed westward.
Let us look at the first voyage and the victuals embarked on the three vessels, the Nina, Pinta and Santa Maria. The first problem was to obtain supplies of food, wine and water. At the Canary islands they picked up fresh water, wood and the famous Gomera goat cheese.
Columbus' first voyage had the best victuals (and enough to last a year), not the case in his other voyages. The menu for Spanish seamen consisted of water, vinegar, wine, olive oil, molasses, cheese, honey, raisins, rice, garlic, almonds, sea biscuits (hardtack), dry legumes such as chickpeas, lentils, beans, salted and barreled sardines, anchovies, dry salt cod and pickled or salted meats (beef and pork), salted flour. The olive oil and perhaps olives were stored in earthenware jugs. All other provisions were stored in wooden casks which, according to some reports, were of cheap and faulty construction permitting the preserving brine to leak out of the meat casks and moisture to invade the casks of dry provisions. All were stored in the hold, the driest section of which was normally reserved for those casks carrying dry provisions. A cooper (barrel maker) was responsible for keeping the casks tight, an almost impossible challenge.

THE EXPLORATIONS OF CHRISTOPHER COLUMBUS
Perhaps the most famous explorer was Christopher Columbus. Born in Genoa, Italy, in 1451 to a weaver, young Columbus first went to sea at the age of fourteen. As a young man, he settled in Portugal and married a woman of noble background. After his wife's death in 1485, Columbus and his young son, Diego moved to Spain. Like all learned men of his time, Columbus knew the world was round. He theorized that since the earth was a sphere, a ship could eventually reach the Far East from the opposite direction. He thought to establish trade routes to Asia in this manner. The fifteenth-century Europeans were not aware of the South and North American continents during this timeframe. Mapmakers did not show an accurate picture and no one knew there was a Pacific Ocean. For a decade, Columbus approached the Portuguese king and the Spanish monarchs to obtain a grant to explore possible trade routes to the west. After initially turning him down, King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella reconsidered once the Moors had been successfully expelled from Spain in 1492. Columbus promised to bring back gold, spices, and silks from the Far East, to spread Christianity, and to lead an expedition to China. In return, Columbus asked for and got the hereditary title "admiral of the ocean seas" and became governor of all discovered lands.

A Research Guide
Christopher Columbus undertook his first voyage across the Atlantic over 500 years ago. Since then, the course of history for both the civilizations he encountered and those he represented has been irrevocably altered. This research guide will focus on primary and secondary sources in the collection of the New York Public Library pertinent to the four voyages made by Columbus. It will also cover other Spanish explorations, Native American reactions, and the methodology for researching the Library's catalogs for material on other relevant explorers and countries.

The four voyages of Columbus (1492-93; 1493-96; 1498-1500; 1502-04) opened the way for the exploration, exploitation, and colonization of the Americas by Europe. There are no surviving manuscripts in Columbus' own hand describing these voyages. Instead, historians have relied upon the following documents:

and the Great Age of Exploration
Exploration is one of the oldest and most widespread of human activities. People have engaged in exploration since prehistoric times. Prehistoric human beings crossed vast areas of land and water and eventually populated all the continents except Antarctica. Later navigators started out from the islands of Southeast Asia and settled Hawaii, New Zealand, and other Pacific Islands. Library of Congress In ancient and medieval times, people from Europe, the Middle East, and Asia ranged far beyond their homelands to chart many areas new to them. Even so, as late as 1450, large parts of the world remained isolated from one another. The Great Age of European Exploration starting about that time. The Italian navigator Christopher Columbus made his first voyage to the American "New World" in 1492. Throughout the 1500's and 1600's, Europeans were the most active explorers in the world. They eventually explored the Americas, Siberia, the Pacific Islands, Australia, Africa, the Arctic, and Antarctica. By the early 1900's, most parts of the world had been explored and mapped.

The New World Since the earliest times, people have speculated about the world in which they live. Inspired by curiosity, wealth, the quest for scientific knowledge, or the desire to find a better place to live, explorers have charted the Earth's surface by both land and sea. Beginning with the epic voyage of Columbus in 1492, Europeans, in an attempt to find a western route to India, stumbled onto a continent which they hailed as a "new world." Although these explorations opened up the Western Hemisphere to European settlement, they spelled disaster for the native inhabitants of the American continent. This virtual exhibit from the US Library of Congress addresses the following questions: What was life like in the Western Hemisphere and the Mediterranean before 1492? What spurred European expansion? How did European, African and American peoples react to each other? What were some of the immediate results of these contacts? The exhibit also examines the first sustained contacts between American people and European explorers, conquerors and settlers from 1492 to 1600. Ships of Discovery

A sailor on board the Pinta sighted land early in the morning of October 12 , 1492, and a new era of European exploration and expansion began. The next day, the 90 crew members of Christopher Columbus's three-ship fleet ventured onto the Bahamian island of Guanahaní, ending a voyage begun nearly ten weeks earlier in Palos, Spain.

As a reward for his valuable discovery, the Spanish crown granted Columbus the right to bear arms . His new Coat of Arms added the royal charges of Castile and Leon and an image of islands to his traditional family arms. Columbus further modified the design to include a continent beside the pictured islands. Before his final voyage, the Spanish monarchs prepared a Book of Privileges, a collection of agreements showing how Columbus was remunerated for his explorations. In 1502, four copies of the book were known to exist. The Library of Congress's precious copy of this work is considered one of the " Top Treasures " included in the online exhibition American Treasures of the Library of Congress

Travel - Motives for Exploration
When you think of exploring new territory, what comes to mind? Hacking through the wild bush with a machete? Sailing into the unknown on large ships? Blasting off in a rocket into space? There are several ways to explore the unknown, just like there are several different reasons to do so. Until the late 1400s, Europeans didn't know North and South America even existed. Motives for Exploration:
  • Desire for wealth and fame.
  • Geographical knowledge.
  • To spread the gospel.
  • National pride.
  • Faster, cheaper trade routes.
  • Thrill of adventure. The New World
Christopher Columbus made one of the most famous voyages of exploration in 1492. Columbus sailed from Palos, Spain in search of a route to Asia and the Indies. He thought the Indies were full of riches. Instead, Columbus found the New World - North America. Other voyages soon followed Columbus'. At first, Europeans thought North America was a chunk of land blocking their way to the Indies. It didn't take long for them to find out North America had a lot to offer, like fur trading. "What is the difference between a true observance and a mere celebration? A celebration is a birthday party for which we put candles on the cake, forgetting imperfections, glossing over errors, and raising our glasses in unadulterated praise. ... An observance examines the whole event, puts it into a modern as well as a historical context, examines the world in which the event took place its mindset, ecology, demography, religious outlook, sociology admits to the existence of both positive and negative aspects, and communicates the true significance of the event, a significance which if properly understood, resonates as much today as in the time when it happened." Students often ask why these texts are important and how they relate to more conventional U.S. literature. You might suggest that they entertain a change in their traditional concept of the U.S. as an English-based country, considering the paradigm of a land that from the start was in contention by forces of several language groups and distinct origins. Students should be taught that this situation is still the same, in spite of the assumption that English won out. The forces present in this period are still contending for a place in U.S. territory. Perhaps the oldest tradition in the U.S. is the struggle among different groups for the recognition of the right to participate fully in making the future of this land.

Christopher Columbus courtesy of Maps.com In 1492, Columbus and his first crew set sail from Palos, Spain on the Nina, the Pinta and the flagship, the Santa Maria. Two months later, on October 12th, crewman, Rodrigo de Triana, first sighted the "new world" somewhere in the Bahamas. Most people are aware of the basic facts of this incredible story of exploration and discovery. But, did you know that Columbus actually took four voyages to the new world? Have you ever wondered what his crew ate on those voyages? And did you know that Columbus was arrested in 1500 and sent home in chains during his third voyage? There is a lot more to the story of this famous explorer than the old children's rhyme. It would be difficult to under-estimate the significance of the voyages of Columbus, even though the explorer had no idea where he was when he made his most momentous discoveries. Christopher Columbus and Columbus Day, observed on October 12th each year, provide a great opportunity for lessons in history, cultures and a lot more. Education Planet offers this Christopher Columbus Curriculum Corner, which includes some excellent Internet resources, including web sites, lesson plans and activities. You will also find a great list of educational resources, including books, videos and more, all available through the Education Planet Store.

Resources for the Study of the Age of Exploration
There are a number of very good sources of online information regarding the Age of Exploration. An outstanding multimedia project, The European Voyages of Exploration , has been put together by the Applied History Research Group at the University of Calgary. For the student interested in general survey accounts the 1492 Exhibit is quite good. Andre Engels' Discoverers Web contains hundreds of links to further information and is an excellent place to start looking for hints to further online research. His page on primary sources is as outstanding as it is thorough. Richard Hooker has written a fine section of his general survey of western civilization called Discovery The Beginnings , and the Mariners' Museum at Newport News, Virginia, is excellent as well. On Columbus, check out Columbus and the Age of Discovery from Millersville University (Pennsylvania) and Keith A. Pickering's Columbus Navigation Home Page . Andre Engels has collected an extensive list of links on Christophorus Columbus . You can also read Dinesh D'Souza's 1995 article "The Crimes of Christopher Columbus."
