Before Vasco da Gama’s celebrated voyage, several other mariners tried and failed in their attempts to find a sea route to the Indies. One of them was Christopher Columbus . He was a native of Genoa, who had worked under Prince Henry in Portugal. Columbus believed that, since the Earth was round, it was possible to find another course by sea to the East. But as no one knew the existence of America then, he like many Europeans underestimated the Earth’s circumference. The result was that Columbus reached San Salvador in the West Indies. Columbus believed that he had touched the Oriental coast. In fact, he had discovered a new continent . Thus, Columbus discovered

Expanding Horizons
European exploration in the 15th and 16th centuries drew on many sources. A growing desire for expansion and trade, along with advances in shipbuilding and commercial technique, fostered the search for new markets and for the legendary sources of precious metals and other commodities. Portuguese exploration and trade along the West African coast and to Atlantic islands, encouraged and directed by Prince Henry de Avis, the Navigator , continued throughout the 15th century. He assembled an international team of experts which made revolutionary advances in geography, navigation, and cartography. Handbooks, guides, and charts, along with the invention of more sophisticated and practical nautical instruments, professionalized what had been largely an intuitive craft. Crucial to these innovations were Muslim and Jewish contributions in mapmaking and navigational instruments. Christopher Columbus went to sea on the crest of these maritime advances.

Exploration and Exploitation Ether Game Name (for ranking comparison only): 1) When Marco Polo returned from seventeen years in China, he was called "the man with a million stories" because of the fantastic tales he told. His chronicles of Asia were used by many other explorers, including Christopher Columbus, to plan their voyages. He returned to England with only two of his three ships intact. Although he made several other voyages to America, Columbus died without realizing that he had discovered a new continent. Christopher Columbus Mark D., Matt C., Andrew G., Jeff S., Patrick G. Ship by Meghan G., Portrait by Elyas B., Map by Jennifer H. Christopher Columbus was born in 1451 and died in 1506. Columbus was a tall and strong boy with reddish blonde hair and blue eyes. He was the oldest of five brothers. He was born in Genoa, Italy. Columbus had little schooling, but taught himself Latin. When he was a little kid, he heard stories about storms and sea monsters. When he became a sailor, people told him the world was flat. Columbus went on his first voyage when he was 19. On August 3rd in 1476, his ship was attacked by pirates. He was wounded and his ship sank. He used an oar to float back to land. Christopher Columbus had an idea to find a sea route to the Indies going west instead of east because he thought the world was round. He estimated that the world was about 11,000 miles around. Columbus first tried to convince the king and queen of Portugal to give him funding, but they said no. In In 1485, he asked King Fernando and Queen Isabella of Spain for funding and after six years, they said yes. Columbus got three ships on his first voyage. Their names were the Nina, the Pinta and the Santa Maria. He was given 90 men. Columbus kept two diaries. One real, one fake. The fake one told the crew that they were close to their homeland. He navigated by using the stars and compasses. He would drop a log into the water to measure the speed of the ship. He also used dead reckoning to navigate. Dead reckoning is a type of navigation that uses a vehicle's location and how far it has traveled to see if it is on course. It is not accurate at all.

Italian mariner and navigator; widely believed to be the first European to sail across the Atlantic Ocean and successfully land on the American continent. Born Cristoforo Colombo, between August and October 1451, in Genoa, Italy. Columbus was the eldest son of Domenico Colombo, a wool-worker and small-scale merchant, and his wife, Susanna Fontanarossa; he had two younger brothers, Bartholomew and Diego. He received little formal education and was a largely self-taught man, later learning to read Latin and write Castilian. Columbus began working at sea early on, and made his first considerable voyage, to the Aegean island of Chios, in 1475. A year later, he survived a shipwreck off Cape St. Vincent and swam ashore, after which he moved to Lisbon, Portugal, where his brother Bartholomew was living. Both brothers worked as chartmakers, but Columbus already nurtured dreams of making his fortune at sea. In 1477, he sailed to England and Ireland, and possibly Iceland, with the Portuguese marine, and he also bought sugar in Madeira for a Genoese firm.
