contents Researchers, community workers, social activists, educators and students, journalists, artists, policy-makers, and citizens are all concerned about the shape that this new infrastructure will take. Will it meet the needs of all people?
Will it help the citizenry address current and future issues?
Will it promote democracy, social justice, sustainability?
Will the appropriate research be conducted?
Will equitable policies be enacted? Help Shape the Network Society!
Giant media conglomerates and computer companies are rapidly increasing their control of the information and communication infrastructure upon which this public sphere depends. Governments, too are often part of this problem: instead of promoting access and multi-way access to this infrastructure they actively or passively discourage civic sector uses. Civic society is fighting back in a million ways. The opportunities and threats offered by a global "network society" are too great to be ignored.

    Abstract
The study of social worlds built by people on computer networks challenges the classical dimensions of sociological research. CMC scholars are prompted to exploit the possibilities offered by new, powerful, and flexible analytic tools for inexpensively collecting, organizing, and exploring digital data. Such tools could be used within a Weberian perspective, to aid in systematic examination of logs and messages taken from the actual life of a virtual community. A proposal can then be made for a longitudinal strategy of research which systematically compares specific aspects of virtual communities over different periods of time and different socio-geographical contexts. The article summarizes a case study on an Italian computer conference, and concludes with a short outline of the new graphical CMC environments and their consequences for the rise of a multimedia cyber-anthropology.
    Introduction
Computer-mediated communication systems exhibit a fair amount of interpretative flexibility . That is, they can mean different things to different individuals or different groups, and their use continues to be interpreted and reinterpreted with the passing of time [

halt!
SCR Project is now the GBoCS (Global Bureau of Computer Security) Social Engineering Directorate. Metropoliz, BlackDragon and s0cialhack, all active members before the move, are now working in the GBoCS SE Directorate . The reasons for this change are the nexts ones:
  • GBoCS covers a wider area in security and computers, and assign people to work in it in their directorates or subdivisions. That way, we don't have to worry about thinks like design, promotion, services, etc. We just focus in Social Engineering. Better logistical and development support. People in GBoCS has a long and respected position in the hacking field, making it easier to get capacited people to be members of GBoCS. There's no problems about paying servers neither. What people in GBoCS want, they manage to make it appear. We (current active SCR Members) decided it would be better that way.
So, we'll keep making what we have always made, Social Engineering. Except that we'll do it better now. See ya all on GBoCS! Metropoliz For any issues, problems, questions or whatever regarding this, don't hesitate to mail to

The Alex Foundation
Communication and Intelligence of Parrots Parrots, and other talking birds, have fascinated mankind since Aristotle. Once thought to be mere mimics, these affable, entertaining and often quite lovable creatures are now known to possess remarkable intellectual abilities. Since 1977, Dr. Irene Pepperberg's studies in Animal Behavior, and Animal- Human communications have provided insight into the capabilities of these animals to talk and to understand Dr. Pepperberg currently works with 4 African Grey Parrots. Alex, the oldest, can count, identify objects, shapes, colors and materials, knows the concepts of same and different, and bosses around lab assistants in order to modify his environment! They have begun work with phonics and there is evidence to suggest that, someday, Alex may be able to read. The results of this work have wide-ranging implications for at least three areas:
  • Studies of avian versus mammalian brain function : Given that the avian brain, although considerably different from that of mammals, can process information in similar ways, might Dr. Pepperberg's procedures assist clinicians who are devising programs for brain-damaged humans?
