Ensuring food security - the basic right of people to the food they need - is one of the greatest challenges facing the world community. Meeting this challenge will require new technologies and new ways of collaborating. But technologies will be fully exploited only if the knowledge of how to put them to use is widely disseminated and applied. FAO's Sustainable Development Department helps to strengthen the capabilities of national and regional research, extension, education and communication systems so that rural people have the knowledge and skills they need to improve their productivity, incomes and livelihoods, and manage the natural resources on which they depend in sustainable ways.
Communication for development
Rural radio and development " presents a critical analysis of rural radio projects implemented by FAO in Western Africa between 1980 and 2000.
Education
This power point presentation on " Education for Rural Development: An Agenda for Action " was given at the INRULED International Symposium on Rural Education 20-23 January 2003, in Baoding, China
Extension
The impact of HIV/AIDS on the different farming sectors in Namibia " issued jointly by the University of Namibia and the FAO Regional Office for Africa, provides background to the situation of HIV/AIDS in Namibia. Issues related to the impact of HIV/AIDS on farming, both communal and commercial are reviewed.

Acoustics and You
(A Career in Acoustics?)
Q:
What do all of these people have in common?
A:
Their work deals with ACOUSTICS. Acoustics is the science of sound. It relates to recorded music, to speech and hearing, to the behavior of sound in concert halls and buildings, and to noise in our environment. Sound waves are used in medical diagnosis, for testing critical materials, and for locating fish in the ocean or oil-bearing rock formations underground.
Q:
What career opportunities are available for me in ACOUSTICS?
A:
The field of ACOUSTICS, because it is so diverse, offers many different career opportunities. We have asked experts in several branches of acoustics to mention some of the opportunities that exist in their particular fields.
Architectural Acoustics
Architectural acoustics deals with sound in and around buildings of all kinds. Good acoustical design ensures the efficient distribution of desirable sounds as well as the exclusion of undesirable sound. It is the branch of acoustics that comes most readily to mind when a layperson thinks of "acoustics." Nearly everyone is aware of the importance of good acoustical design in concert halls, recording studios, auditoriums, and churches. But people spend more of their time in homes, offices, factories, or classrooms where little or no attention may have been given to the acoustical environment. Good acoustics should, and can, be engineered during the design of the building, since changes at a later time are expensive.

Needs Assessment: Benchmark Study (return to top)
In the fall of 1999, the founders of CCI carried out a benchmark survey to describe the current state of communication in Fortune 1000 companies. The main objective of the survey was to find out the responsibilities of corporate communication professionals, what they do, and how the corporate communication function is structured in the contemporary corporation. The results of the survey are summarized in a presentation given on March 8, 2000, to the Institute and are made available here. draft 0.2; October 5, 1998
This is the second version of our public announcement of an interdisciplinary action+research network on the development, study, and advocacy of communication technology that will benefit individuals, communities, and society. Its focus is on non-commercial, public networked technology. The Purpose: The idea is to develop and sustain a to-be-defined research / action network on the idea of community and technology with an emphasis on engaging with the world in addition to studying the world. We are concerned with the development of community problem-solving capacity and with equity issues surrounding access to that capacity. We envision that the network will help us share ideas, resources, and information; help legitimatize and promote interest and discussion on the topics ; and develop multiple perspectives. To these ends we plan to write and publish papers, books, and digital information. We also plan to organize a variety of regional, national, and international events on these themes. Themes: Our key themes are (1) technology (particularly digital communications technology); (2) research + activism. These areas could include policy work, education and training, participatory design, Internet campaigns, and, even, development of applications, services, systems, or applications; (3) global reach (we potentially have people from several countries in Western Europe and the states; ultimately we would have people from Eastern Europe, Africa, Asia, the Middle East, Oceania, Latin and South America, Canada, etc.); and (4) defining and exploring what it means to work together as a

Wireless telephones transmit low-energy radio waves to local antennas. These antennas are connected to a local phone network, or directly to another wireless phone. Cellular phones use the same frequency over and over by dividing up geographic areas into cells. These cells can be as large as an entire country, or as small as a single building. PCS cells tend to be smaller than traditional analog cells. This gives PCS the capacity to handle more subscribers.
As the user moves from cell to cell, the call is “handed off” from one antenna to the next. Digital technologies such as Time Division Multiple Access (TDMA), Global Standard for Mobile Communications (GSM) and Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA) allow cells to handle multiple calls on the same frequency. Large PCS service areas also allow for wider “roaming,” and new data services linked to the Internet.

HCRC brings together theories and methods from several formal and experimental disciplines to understand better how this happens. We focus on spoken and written language; we also study communication in other media - visual, graphical and computer-based.
